    I’m from this area I’ve gone to this mall all my life. Granted I haven’t been there probably since 2014-2015. But however I’m surprised to see still some of the original stores are still there. It used to be a great mall that was always packed and it’s sad to see that go. Down across from the AT&T store used to be a huge FYE and inside the store behind it was a moderately sized arcade with some really good games in it. Then in the same area their was a really small movie theater built into the tiny section right behind where the arcade would of been. Now they have movie theater outside of the mall behind it which I imagine is still going strong. Another note that cricket store used to be a pretty awesome candy store then KB Toys was right across from Spencer’s which I’m surprised is still there in its original form from the looks of it that place hasn’t changed since the early 90s at the latest.
    I was actually going to visit this mall a couple days ago I think now I definitely have to so I can see this for myself. It’s really sad seeing how many dead malls there are in Pennsylvania they are all over. Every mall I grew up around is dead or dying.

    I appreciated that little "not going after the mall" message at the beginning. This mall was VERY hot from the mid 2000's-2014/16ish. It was the mall you went too when you didn't want to make the drive to Wilkes-Barre or further.
    Mall used to be a straight line three anchor design (Both ends, one middle) and got a major addition (that other wing). The AMC also had a big expansion later.
    This mall also has some of the best roaming security I've ever seen, both on foot and vehicle.

      I’m actually from Pittsburgh, but had lots of family in Selinsgrove, so spent a lot of time at that mall when I was a kid. That mall was top tier back in the 80’s and 90’s too. The arcade with the blue Tron lights was one of the best arcades I’d ever been to.

    Great video! I was born and raised in that area when that mall was a vibrant place to go. While several factors have contributed to its decline such as the nationwide challenges of several of its retailers, the opening of Monroe Marketplace a decade ago not far down the road likely put tremendous pressure on it which hastened its decline. Hopefully, it can somehow be reinvented and preserved. Thanks for documenting it!

    Unfortunately, it seems like the expansion that added Sears was a bad decision, but that's hindsight. This is one of the nicer area malls and complete shame it's failing.

      At the time, the expansion which added Sears and several other businesses increased the vibrancy of the mall. I agree that it's a shame it's failing because it is such a nice mall.

      My husband and I have often said that we didn't know if adding that back part was such a good idea. I think about every time we went to the mall, the back part didn't have nearly the amount of foot traffic that the original part had. There just seemed to be more things going on out front. Also, it seemed like it was harder for them to continue bringing in stores in the addition.

    Great little look at a very well designed, interesting mall that still has a little life in it. IT would a tragedy to let this place die since it has unique design elements like the marble floors, the fountains and interesting layout of the center. There are lots of vacant spaces. I think the savior of some of these malls is Boscovs and their funky designs and decent prices and selection and cupcakes.
    Don't understand why people would go to a boring bland design Simon mall instead of a place like this. THanks again for documenting all these malls large and small and preserving their history. Proud to be a Patreon too.
    PS: I hate WalMart too, not just for how they killed stores and malls and downtowns but their customer service is non existance. For me it's the customer service folks. Why I go to Nordstroms. and the Rack. I have still not been to a Boscovs to see how their customer sevice is.

    I remember going to this mall last year. My kids and another girl played the game shown at 2:59. I had lived an hour away at one point but had never been there until last year when I was on vacation and needed a new phone. I stopped at the Verizon store but they didn't have what I wanted. Then a bit further down I came to another Verizon store. Turns out the first was just a licensed independent and the second, which had what I wanted, was the corporate store. Being a PA resident for most of my life I've been to many of the dead malls featured on RUclips. Thanks for the video.

    I remember when Boscov's was built and was the only store there for awhile. My husband and I used to go to the mall a lot and would take our two kids there. We'd stop at the pet store and the parrot there would say, "Ernie's a bad boy" and some other things. There were absolutely throngs of people walking through the mall in the 80's and 90's. We'd also like to go to Peanut Shack for peanuts, cashews, and pumpkin seeds. We'd walk through Boscov's, JC Penney, and Bon Ton. Then after the back section of the mall was added, we also walked through Sears. Before I was married in 1980, I used to go into the arcade and play pinball and Space Invaders. My family and I loved spending part of our Friday evenings there shopping. So much fun! Besides when I went into Gertrude Hawk right before Valentine's Day, before that, a few years ago we went to Garfield's right before they closed. It might be hard for someone who wasn't alive (or very young) in past decades to know how extremely busy SVM was. Sears and JC Penney had auto centers that were kept busy, and all of the department stores had hair salons. The one in Boscov's was upstairs before the store was expanded, including eliminating the upstairs. There was a 4-register checkout area at the bottom of the steps where you could buy Ticketmaster tickets. Boscov's used to have a garden center, health & beauty area, hardware department and sold many appliances including refigerators and tv's. I'm glad that Boscov's owns their own building. Someone had told me of the extremely high rent that stores had (have?) to pay to be in malls and supposedly that's why CVS built their own store and moved out of the mall. Although I don't know for a fact but I would surmise that because of Boscov's owning their own building, it has enabled them to stay there when all the other anchors, amongst lots of other stores there, have closed. I apologize if this got too wordy but thought maybe you and others would like to read another reminiscence of the mall in Hummels Wharf.

    One of the main reasons there aren't many people walking around is because this was most likely recorded during the week (please correct me if I'm wrong). This place is usually pretty busy during the weekend.
    I feel that instead of building big stores in the nearby Monroe Marketplace. They should've put some in the mall. There's some big stores like Target, Best Buy, Michael's, and Kohl's at Monroe Marketplace. I believe that did a great deal on the mall.

    This is my local mall. I will say that the mall is still dead but there are new stores popping up inside the mall. Even with the pandemic, there are still a good amount of people coming in and out daily.

    We hate Walmart too, especially in New Orleans. Let's trade them all for one Woolworths. Have you heard of the Sunrise Mall in Corpus Christi? Beautiful, huge mall but totally defunct. With an interesting history I might add.

    I recommend dead mall producers to come to the Jacksonville Florida area. There is a LOT to work with. You want typical malls still doing good - we got 2. You want a mall about to be bulldozed - check. You want 2 new outdoor malls that are among the most successful in the country - check. You want an old mall that despite dying for over 10 years hangs on with 30 stores - check. You want a mall that now has ONLY anchors, and the ENTIRE inside has been closed off - check

    I've got a mall you can go investigate. Exton square mall in exton PA, it appears to be going in a downturn, the only highly populated area is the food court, the rest of this mall not so much. Add this mall to your channel.

    It's sad to the conference centers at malls doing baldy, too. Nowadays, so many cos. use Skype, videos, etc; instead of face-to-face meetings, that mall conference space is in rapid decline. Too bad. My old employer, lacking huge office space, used these centers for client hook-ups.

    Is this mall in an area that used to have lots of coal mining jobs that have gone away as mines closed?

    • @esw01407
      @esw01407 5 лет назад +1

      No, is about 20 miles outside the coal region. They just did lose a major factory in the area, 1,000 jobs gone in one day.

    • @seaguy
      @seaguy 5 лет назад

      So one could say the area is a bit depressed economically due to such a large number of jobs lost at one time. That’s never good for any retail, but especially second tier malls with vacant former Sears, JCP, and BonTon’s.

    • @esw01407
      @esw01407 5 лет назад

      Most of the malls in that area are holding on or have been previously de-malled. South Mall and Westgate Mall are the two concerns. South Mall is losing another anchor, the furniture store. Phillipsburg is just waiting for a bulldozer.

    Looks like a mall we have here, poor thing looks just like that Frisco Mall. It's not the fact that there are no people who want to rent it, it's the overpriced rental prices that keep people away.

    I do believe the murder of Laurie Auker that you referred to was covered on Forensic Files. The episode is probably available here on RUclips.

      Why her case is interesting and it made the Wiki article, was sadly, lots of cutting edge work was done with bugs and how it proved timelines. Sadly.

    • @eeb7dmb
      @eeb7dmb 3 года назад

      Lori Auker was my second cousin, I went to the trial. In 1989 when she arrived at the mall to go to work she happened to be right outside of the ATM machine (which at that time only took still shots every 10 seconds-not continuous video). It was the first instance of a court in the United States
      to admit digitally enhanced video images as evidence. A NASA specialist (who also worked on enhancing footage of the Challenger Shuttle disaster) enhanced the images. It showed her leaning into the open front passenger door of a car which was driven by her estranged husband. According to her colleagues he had been stalking her outside of the mall for awhile. There was no murder weapon found and no admission, he was convicted using 153 pieces of circumstantial evidence. Her son Matthew was raised by her parents.
