    I've been to Moscow, its a gorgeous city. I've never been to a place where Metro stations are more beautiful than Cathedrals. I've also been to St Petersburg. Both are well worth a visit. Especailly if you are intersted in Russian History.

    No, Napoleon and Alexander weren't gay for each other. Such depictions are either parodies created by the British or by media to get the point accross that France and Russia were courting each other at the time.

      Not even that, it was just the common courtesy of the time to take off the hat of the person you are meeting and embrace / kiss them. Look at the picture closely, you will see Napoleon holding Alexander's hat and Alexander holding Napoleon's hat.

      It may be just a sign of extremly warm relations. In Russia the tradition for men to kiss each other lips and cheeks without any homosexual background was widely spread until the middle of the twentieth century. And it was just a sign of "brothers" love and respect. The same thing about Breszhnev with his famous kisses with different politicians

      @@АлексейАндрианов-й3кBrezhnev was the so-called „socialist fraternal kiss“ done between leaders of socialist nations. It has however roots dating back to the Christian holy kiss, or brother kiss, or kiss of peace

    They kissed each other on the cheek not on the mouth, it’s a sign of affection which is still practised around Europe and the world. It’s why their faces are tilted away from each other rather than being directly opposed.

      @@vtaliicheliadnik7556 as I remember in their diplomatic messages to the Russian Tsar, they call themselves Russian people, but I'm too lazy to look for and check documents of that era, so I could be wrong. In any case, at that time the main distinguishing feature of one community from another was religion. The Cossacks have always considered themselves Orthodox and were absolutely intolerant of attempts to plant Catholicism by the Poles. Therefore, they always gravitated towards the Orthodox Russian Tsar and Russia and never singled themselves out into any separate ethnic community. Attempts to create a semblance of an independent Cossack state were made by some influential, wealthy, well-born Cossacks who had their own ambitions and did not want to be servants of the Polish or Russian rulers. But these are individuals and not the public request of the Cossack society. Therefore, we can confidently say that the Cossacks are part of the Russian ethnogenesis on the territory of the "Wild Field", as it was then called.

    You're making a bit much of that kiss between Napoleon and Alexander. It was probably not quite as depicted in that painting. That was likely an exaggeration or even parody of the alliance between them. That said, this was Europe in the 19th century. holding hands, linking arms, and kissing (of some sort) between men would not have been considered romantic but platonic and respectful. Please don't get the impression Napoleon was gay or bi!

    The border area between Poland-Lithuania, Russia and the Ottoman's vassal state - the Crimean Khanate was like the Wild West. Lawless region, where outlaws from these three states ran away to. They fused into warband communities. Poland-Lithuania and Russia started employing them as mercenaries in their wars against each other, to raid the Crimean Khanate and free Christians, who have been abducted into slavery and also for other tasks (for example Ermak Timofeev's warband in Siberia). These were the cossacks. Russia has gradually conquered these lands and the cossacks became self-governing communities under the Russian tsar and a military corps. Consider them as mounted rangers, who scouted ahead of the Russian army, fought skirmishes and conducted hit-and-run raids against enemy contingents bigger than their own numbers.

    Cossaks were an Ethnic group in Russia that were revered and feared for their horsemanship that was highly valued by the Czar, they are the equivalent of Mongol calvary back in the times of Gengis Khan. But sadly they were wiped out like other minority groups by Stalin during his mass purges of everything effective and Czarist.

    • @xXXArchangellXXx
      @xXXArchangellXXx Год назад

      Cossacks had nothing to do with Mongols at all. They were ethnic Russian / Ukrainian people of the steppe who lived freely and semi-independent of the Tsar's realm, although most of the time still recognized him as supreme overlord.

    Hitler made this exact same mistake in WWII. The difference between Napoleon's invasion of Russia and Hitler's invasion of Russia is that Napoleon actually captured Moscow and the closest Hitler came was capturing the last commuter train station at the western edge of Moscow. Both campaigns ended the same way.

      The mistake is the long distances and not being able to support the army, same thing happened to the Russians at Austerlitz and the Red army before Berlin. Ofc they ended the same way, the other option would be victory but that's long out of the window.
