Woodturning one of the hardest woods in the world. The Hershey's Kiss.

- Hello and welcome. In this weeks video I will be using a woodturning lathe to make a lidded box from one of the hardest woods in the world, African Blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon).
On a recent trip to the timber merchants I saw this beautiful piece of wood for sale. Originally prepared to make a clarinet bell (the horny bit at the bottom) however, what I saw trapped inside was this droplet box.
Shaped, sanded, polished with Yorkshire grit and oiled with flaxseed to finish.

Amazing how wood alone can create resin levels of confetti like that 😯 Really lovely result!
Cheers! It is an awesome wood to work with, very hard so it can put up a bit of a fight but sands up beautifully. Thanks for watching! 😁
Hello my friend,
Definitely a hardwood. and great workmanship. very nice design. Thank you for sharing the details. Congratulations. All the best.
Mehmet, hello! 😁 Glad you like it. Thanks for watching and your kind comment, take care my friend.
Yeah, Tim, African black wood is very hard and shiny, I really enjoy turning this wood, furthermore, its smell is good aslo. I love this wood.
Great job,👍👍👍👍👍
Cheers Gao, I love it too, definitely one of my favourites to turn 😁 Thanks for watching my friend!
Looks great looks like a Hershey kiss
Cheers Chris! So I believe, just need to get hold of some now! 😂 Thanks for watching!
That is really cool. But wait, there more! It opens! Awesome!
Cheers Chris, what's better than a pleasing wooden shape? It's one that you can hide stuff in! Thanks for watching bud.
a wonderful result, looks great! It looks like the perfect spot to keep a few Hershey's kisses inside!
Cheers Mike! These Hershey's kisses are a new one on me but definitely something I'm gonna have to seek out! 😂 Thanks for watching and the kind words!

Very beautiful, never had the opportunity of turning blackwood.
All the best.
Mauro
Thanks Mauro, I have had a few bits over the years but it's getting really expensive now. Take care my friend 👋

Beautiful!
Thank you so much!! 😁
Great result Tim Thanks for the video
Thanks Dave, much appreciated mate! Hope you're well.
That's gorgeous!
Thank you sir 😁
Thank You Tim.... Fun, educational & entertaining to watch (I love the hard woods).... TM
Thank you so much Tuffy! Softwoods certainly have their place but nothing beats a nice hardwood on the lathe! Thanks for watching and the kind words! Cheers 😁
@@tfturning You are very welcome. Tim I know very little from first hand experience with wood turning alone. Manual machinist for over 48 years on the job and I still LOVE IT. I do turn wood when it relates to whatever project I am working on and again I love turning/milling the hard woods as if I was working soft Aluminum or brass. Hard woods hold up to sharp crisp edges ... although .... I certainly have had my failures. Tim I "liked & subscribed" to your channel and will visit again as time allows. I assume you are in England ? I am in California, Bay Area...(Very HOT today!!!!).... TM
@@tuffymartinez Metal work has always appealed, I started watching a lot of those videos around the same time as watching the woodturners, glass blowing too, all fascinating! I watched them that often that I knew one would become a hobby and here we are 4 years on, absolutely obsessed with my lathe and the shapes you can get with the right mix of ideas and bravery 😂 Speaking of which, my next piece is going to be a bit whacky looking while it's turning.
All being well, premiering sunday 7pm BST.

Yes I'm over in an uncharacteristically warm UK, we had 39°C on Tuesday, that's wild for over here.
It's nice to get a gauge of where folks tune in from, California has been a bit of a hot spot for viewers on my channel too, I'd love to know how it decides where to show things.
Thanks again my friend!
@@tfturning Sorry, do not want to take you away from your shop to much...but...My RUclips woodturning friend Phil Anderson (Shady Acres Wood Shop) up in Washington State. I have been sending him wood and tools when I come up with an idea. Phil had this tool I thought up for quite a while until he found a need for it. If you have the time please check it out & I would like to know what you think...later...TM

Lovely piece Tim 👏🏼👏🏼
Nice one Steve! Cheers mate!

Thank you sir!
Amazingly gorgeous lidded kiss! It is beautiful!
Thank you Dotty, I wasn't aware of the chocolates before making this, I really need to seek out a sample! 😂 Thanks for watching!
Oh my goodness! So cute at first, but up close, man what a shine!! And the patterns of the wood are gorgeous!
Thank you so much! I think it's one of my favourite turnings to date, super pretty wood too! Thanks for watching 😁
Super jolie Tim bravo et bonne vidéo top 👍👏
Merci Denis, glad you like it! 😁
fantastic piece Tim. Looks like a keeper.
Cheers Mike, will be a tough one to let go that's for sure!
Nice big Hershey Kiss.
Thanks!
Absolutely gorgeous Tim, well done! 😀
Thanks for watching Val 😊
Great job! Infinitely elegant! Just a treat for the eyes. Thanks for the video 👏
Thank you so much, glad you like it! 😀
Hi Tim , Great looking project , I hope you are wearing a face mask , preferably I am fed mask .
African black walnut it's not very good for your lungs , but it is a beautiful wood to work with .
I should know I have made approximately 1000+ pepper pots salt mills back in 1998 to 2000 out of black wood . And the same amount in walnut and in a special plastic they were made for a company that will gilding the bottom edge in silver solid ring it was engraved for the millennium, 2000.
Stay safe keep up the great work look forward to seeing another project .
Phil from the Moulin in France.
Hi Phil, thank you so much! Yeah I always wear a full face respirator when turning, firstly for the dust and also the flying debris. In the early days no matter what glasses/ visors I had the dust always seemed to find my eyes so the full face is ideal. I also have a Stealth half mask when sanding or other general dusty activities.
Salt mills sound cool, I bet they are still in use somewhere too!!
Thanks for watching and the kind words, take care!
Beautiful work Tim, turned out looking great. Take care, John
Cheers John, thanks for watching! Take care mate 😁
Wow 🤩
Thanks 😁
Very nice. I have one of those bell blanks and just haven’t figured out what I wanted to do with it. Now I have an idea. Well done Tim!
Thanks Doug! It was one of those moments, I knew exactly what it was going to be seeing the shape in the store. Cheers bud!
Great result Tim! You can tell by the dust coming off as shavings and the way it sanded it was hard. Sanded up well though! Cheers, Dave
So loud taking it to round too, I bet the neighbors thought I had the pneumatic drill out 😂 Cheers mate!
That was a nice piece Tim 👍. The wood is so dark I didn’t even realize it was a box. Good job Tim ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks Matt! I do like that the shut line is pretty hidden, not hidden enough close up but good enough 😂 Cheers mate!
That’s one big chocolate kiss!
Perfect for putting little kisses in…
Very dense wood so it quite heavy too, I wouldn't want to drop it on my foot. Thanks for watching!
Sorry Tim I missed it, Great little piece though. Beautiful tight grain and you made it shine
Aston @IWMS
All good my friend and thanks, it is such a nice wood. 10/10, would recommend 😁
Man those streamers coming off the tool were just awesome to watch. A beautiful project mate. I’ve not turned African Blackwood before but we have something similar in hardness here in Australia. I love turning hardwoods because the finish you can achieve if you’re patient is just amazing. Again, well done mate. 👍🏼👍🏼
Cheers Glen! Yeah it was pretty hard on the tools but the finish you can get with this wood makes it all worthwhile! Thanks for watching mate, much appreciated! Hooroo ✌️
Really nice glossy finish on this one Tim, cool shape too. Stay safe brother.
Nice one Ian! Wasn't without a mishap or two, the end of year fails vid has some more content added! 😂 Cheers mate!
Absolutely fantastic, Tim! Great form and design, and a flawless finish. Well done!
Nice one Seth, thanks for watching bud!! Hope you're well 😁
@@tfturning Doing alright man! Hope you’re doing well too!
@@BrickhouseCraftWorks All good here cheers, warm though, pushing 40°c at the moment. Quite out of the ordinary for the UK 😂😂
@@tfturning Wow! Yeah, no doubt!
Stay hydrated, my friend! 🍻 lol
Hi Tim, That is beautiful which ever way you look at it.
Superb piece and video Tim.
I have a spindle about 1 1/2" square of this and will make a pen out of some of it as now I know how it finished I think will make an amazing pen.
Thanks for showing this one Tim.
Take care.
Cheers, Huw
Oh it will make an awesome pen!! I sanded this from 180 to 400 then a bit of the old gritty to shine. Such a wonderful wood and I look forward to seeing your pen! Thanks for watching mate, take care!
It's not a box, it's a Chocolate Kiss; a beautiful one at that.
Didn't know what a chocolate kiss was until now, you're right, totally looks like one! Cheers 😁
Wow, that's just astonishing material, so dense and cuts like resin, those streamer shavings coming off. And what a terrific outcome. Thanks Tim, I mean your projects are always fabulous but this one was amazing from start to finish. Cheers mate.
Thank you Mark, glad you like it! As long as the tools are sharp it is amazing to work with, stay tuned for the end of year fails round-up as this one will feature 😂 Thanks for watching mate, you're too good to me!
@@tfturning Ha! I'll look out for your bloopers reel come Christmas. How did you come by such a super bit of wood? Does your local supplier normally get dud clarinet blanks? What other exotic goodies do they have kicking about?
@@MarkMcCluney It was from a local shop and to be honest, it looked like they had a surplus of these, often have Purpleheart boards in too, lovely looking stuff but expensive. That's also where the olive came from.
@@tfturning Expensive. Isn't everything at the moment? Oh well...
Thats very nice is it as hard as lignum vitai ( crown green bowling ball) it looks very similar to it think I might have to try a piece of that
To be fair, Lignum is lovely to work with and even though this is technically softer I think the oilyness of lignum helps with the cuts. Love that stuff, the smell is incredible. Cheers mate!
A beautiful box with a perfect form.
Just aside which video editing software do you use. I'm having problems with trying to use editing software with multiple channels. I'm used to use Microsoft movie maker which I can't use on Linux.
Thanks!! I edit on iMovie currently, it can do multiples, essentially just an A and B. For the most part I only have one camera nowadays and move it around more, it annoyed me that the footage between the main camera and the GoPro style was so different so got rid.
I've heard a lot of good about DiVinci Resolve, made by blackmagic, the camera folks. Free software and rivals Adobe Premiere, well worth checking out.
@@tfturning I'm using open shot but I've looked at others all have multiple channels which is far too complicated for my simple brain.
@@missteeturns That's the main reason I'm still using iMovie 😂
A beautiful product! Stained oak?
Thank you so much. The wood is African blackwood, very dense but turns beautifully.
May I ask what tool you are using to make tenon? Thanks
Of course, it's a Henry Taylor 1/4" parting/beading tool, super useful little thing. Works like a skew chisel too. You can get a better view of it on this one when making the finial: ruclips.net/video/NHp6lVRI2h8/видео.html
This object should be classified as stone, not wood. It makes tools blunt really quick hahaha...
Yes it does! 😂😂 Satisfying though! Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave a comment, much appreciated!
It's a beetroot
Absolutely!! 😂 Thanks for watching!
