There are almost too many things to list to be impressed by here. Skew work, off center turning, doing the whole thing on pen jaws, the surprise of the candle in the end. So much excellence! Awesome work!
Hoo-weeee! I've never smoked anything in my life but 6:15 to 6:54 is sorta' what I think it must be like. Thank you for providing this healthy alternative. Now back to the show...
thats just way cool! found myself having to look away for a second a time or two! glad I watched before having my drinks for the evening! good job. well done!
I have never seen off center turning before. It made me a bit dizzy there for a bit. I must say it Turned out beautifully. Thanks for sharing your work. ❤ 🙃
I just realized there is something different about watching your turning videos compared to the others I watch. Your tools are clearly much sharper than the others. I realized you just cut through the wood like butter and made super quick work of making a round base to work with. From there it is just a pleasure to watch the creativity you always manage to come up with. This project is perfectly named as it definitely looks like a crankshaft. Well done as always!!
Thank you so much!! A sharp tool is a happy tool 😁 I do seem to sharpen fairly often, but with the jig I use is a breeze to set up so takes no time at all really. Thanks for watching!!
Cheers Steve, they can be pretty trying at times, lost count of the amount I've slung up the garden in a post break rage 😂 Fun when it goes well though! Thanks for watching pal!
Thanks Dave! I think it's probably the catchiest one in my repertoire, I can't think of another that took as many failed attempts to get there in the end 😂 Cheers pal!
Again, So cool ! And so brave Tim, esp. doing the base's rings !! eek ! Only odd thing is an inline 7 cyl (8 mains) would be terribly unbalanced - for either a 2 or 4 stroker. Lol ! But, you sir are a turning wizard🧙for sure 👍👍👍 Keep 'em coming. Take care. -Mike
Thank you so much Mike!! Something I've pondered since turning the first one of these is a mini engine model. That would be super cool! As for the amount of cylinders, duelly noted, I wouldn't want it to be unbalanced/underpowered 😂 Thanks for watching bud, hope you're well!
Cheers Doug! Yeah I did a little during but not as much as I should have. Wasn't too bad sanding at the end, there was still a fair bit of strength left in the wood. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely extraordinary piece of work Pog, just terrific. I thought the candle might have a little turned flame too. Also this might be a very interesting way to make a crankshaft for a wooden mechanical toy. Cheers mate; very, very enjoyable.
Thank you so much Mark! This style has had me thinking for a while about making something that moves. I think it could work quite well. As always, thanks for stopping by buddy, I appreciate you taking the time 😁
Incredible Tim. I now know I can hold my breath for 19.34 minutes. Keeping this one just in case I wake up one morning and feel brave enough to try it. Were they the Axminster Pen Jaws with two removed? Brilliant video Tim. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
Thanks so much Huw, yeah it's the Axminster pen jaws, they do two sizes and these are the bigger of the two. Using just the opposites, 1 and 3 or 2 and 4, I can't remember exactly which combination. Thanks for watching mate, hope you're well!
Thanks Alf! That was going the be the plan initially but all I could think about was stray wax dripping down the stick so decided against. The next time I will likely shape a little cup around the candle hole as a catcher. Thanks for watching and the sub, very much appreciated!
@@tfturning I haven't had the 'courage' to do an off-center turning. It seems too off balance for me :-). I am currently trying to turn a piece of alabaster....
@@marqued775 Crikey, think I'll stick with the off center stuff 😂 I've often thought about turning some kind of rock and now I want a coffee mug after a video I saw earlier. He didn't do much of it on the lathe but what he did looked terrifying!
@@tfturning The weight of the stone worried me at first since I only have a midi lathe, but it worked out ok. The dust is a concern and it is a bit hard on the tools ;-)
This was my second attempt at this particular piece. I foolishly chipped off a bit from one of the sections under the candle cup on the first try. I've made quite a few of this type over the last couple of years, including a super small one. Broken a lot while getting to this point too 😂 Thanks for watching!

Absolutely amazing, Tim! What an ingenious off center turning hack! No special chuck required or anything, well done!
Cheers Seth!! Grass roots multi axis turning.. sort of! 😂 Thanks for watching buddy!

That's very kind, thank you for watching and the comment. Very much appreciated 😊
Interesting use of the pen jaws. Never would have thought of that - going to have to give it a shot now!
Cheers, it's much cheaper than a new set of jaws! Thanks for watching.
Looks like a good start on offset turning. Nice piece!
Cheers Don, glad you like it!
Was great to meet you at Makers Tim.
That is a really cool idea. Nice work.
Cheers John! Likewise, was good to meet up!

Thanks Gary, glad you like it!
Great as always Tim 👍
Cheers Aston, thanks for watching bud!
Really cool use of pen jaws, I would like to try, guess I cannot believe those jaws could secure stock like that. Thank you for demonstrating.
Cheers David! It was surprisingly secure given I was only using 2 of the 4. Thanks for watching, hope you found it useful.
OMG!! I’m always impressed! I’ll take a pair please. ;-)
Thank you so much! If you are interested drop me an email and we can talk 😁
Excellent piece of work Tim 👍🏻 I’ve never attempted any wobbly turning looks to hypnotic to me and can vision catches everywhere

Thanks for watching and the kind comment Val, Glad you liked it! 😀
Really nice pieces Tim! Well done
Cheers Chris, thanks for stopping by!
Loving that Tim will have to have a go one day
Thanks Barry! They're a lot of fun once you get past the initial craziness of turning it all different ways lol. Cheers pal!
sooo 60s funky😉🤣 thx fer this inspiration ...gonna try
Thanks for watching and the comment! Have fun turning 😁
Yes, I agree with Seth, excellent use of pen jaws! Great overall result especially given the whole thing is a catch waiting to happen!

Thank you so much!
One day I will make a whirligig and this will come in handy!
Nice!! I look forward to seeing it. Thanks for watching bud!
cracking job

Very good Tim, only thing , I got told to finish sand every bit as you turn

That is wild Tim the only way I could do that is cut up a straight rod and glue it together lol😂😂😂 sorry I missed the live stay safe bud👍👍👍👍

Enjoy watching!!

Nice one Tim ,,. But I would have made them for real candles , stay safe, Regards Alf ,. I've subbed

Another fantastic piece! Nice job. Question, what about rotating the piece 90 deg every couple of segments?
Thank you so much! That's a really good idea actually, rotating then off setting each time may be able to spiral the segments.. interesting! Cheers!!
