    I live on 1Ac with a creek flowing thru in Kelowna BC Canada. Lots of birds, robins, various woodpeckers, orioles, western tanager and many others. An amazing sanctuary. Invasive Gray squirrels arrived and within 4 mos the property was void of any birds. Eggs and nestlings eaten. Had to get a top end pellet gun and set up a feeding station. Some Birds returned a year later, but only some common species. 4 years now I have to bait & cull the eastern grays and still some of the rarer birds have not returned. Most people still think these monsters are cute and would be horrified to know I actively control them, for the sake of our indigenous species including the harmless Western Red squirrel. Local education on these beasts would be helpful to say the least.

    My dad has killed well over 200 grey squirrels by my house over the past year and a bit. He doesn't do it professionally. We just have a bird feeder outside our kitchen window, so often when he's making a cup of tea one will be there stealing food, so he will go and get his air rifle and kill it. Or one will get trapped in our polecat trap, so we just shoot it in the cage, bit brutal, but it must be done. Ever since he's been killing many of them, tons of rare and unique birds have been by our house making nests and getting food from the bird feeder. Its really nice to see how many birds are back in the area again. Probably a bit too many now lol. Often wake me up in the morning when I have my window open. Really shows how much damage these things cause.

Do you remember the foot and mouth culling? So-called “marksmen” running wild among terrified cattle shooting wildly, killing and wounding. It was all caught on camera and shown on the news at the time. Eradicating the grey squirrel should be a painful task, not an enjoyable pastime. My opinion is that it won’t work anyway, there are too many and we should learn to live with them, and who gave us the right to wipe out one species of animal in favour of another.

    I use my shooting skills with my .22 rifle 22 pistol and 4.5 mm rifle to shoot those greys down - I find it is way better in winter because there are no leaves on the trees and it is pheasant season so they will be all over the feeders and the gamekeeper gives us some pheasants too. I shoot corvids rabbits and woodies too.

  • @alanmorris8783
    @alanmorris8783 4 года назад +8

    Though air rifles are an excellent way of taking squirrels, I cannot but think that the feeding stations provide the perfect nutrition for them every second that they are not being shot. Perhaps the use of shotguns to destroy their drays around breading time could be the initial culling method, with the air rifle/feeder being used to mop up the stragglers?

    • @PortmanRd

      Red squirrels avoid the Pine Marten easily by going out onto the most thinnest of branches. Unlike the Grey which is much heavier. As for the Otter I couldn't give a rat's arse about your precious fishing stocks. Otters are only now starting to return to their natural habitat after being hunted and persecuted for centuries in the UK, and almost to the point of near extinction. Long may they thrive and multiply.

      Grey squirrels are native to North America, and were introduced into Europe (this channel is mostly filmed in the UK) in the late 19th century. They wiped out most of the red squirrels due to the greys having a better feeding strategy, and as a result only pockets of reds exist in the UK. You have to take this channel with a pinch of salt given its target audience, but the grey squirrels in Europe are an invasive pest, and 100% need to be culled. It's good habitat management at the very least, as well as food stuff.
      Interestingly, one of the pockets of red squirrels on an island called Brownsea Island has the same strain of leprosy that caused massive problems in the medieval period. As it stands though, leprosy is nowhere near of an issue as it used to be, but it's a fun fact

      The eastern gret squirrel evolved in an enviorment where there is a higher number off predators which resulted in them having a higher number of young each year to compensate. Once introduced to England they rapidly breed and spread out from various estates. Some of them carry a virus which the eurasion reds have no immunity to, and once a red squirrel contracts the virus it rapidly gets passed from red squirrel to red squirrel. Also if there are greys present it causes the reds distress which results in them not breeding.
      Recent research by the British Ornithological Trust has shown that the eastern greys will result in exstinction events of some song birds in the uk. Due to this they have been listed in the 10 most evasive species.

      Where's here? The UK red squirrel is the Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris); the American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is a different animal.

    I’ve had a reply saying temp the squirrels off the property. My reply is the greys are uk wide, we can’t corral them into one area we need to eradicate them, if Bella is based in the UK and your anti shooting why are you watching this programme

      @@lukethekuya Blame the people who imported the alien grey. My biggest objection to culling greys is that most of the people involved aren’t doing it for ecological reasons. They just enjoy shooting animals. Sick bastards.

      @@jelly.212. The people that imported them are all dead long ago but perhaps l should be worried about the psychopaths who enjoy killing for killings sake.
