I'm 58 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, we are finding it impossible to replace it. We can get by, but cant seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 40years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for

I’m born and raised in Florida. My granny took us fishing from Tampa Bay down to the Everglades as a kid. The gulf slowly disappeared behind gated communities and “private property.” How can the gulf be private? Fishing limited and access completely blocked. Around this same time that Hurricane Ian got closer to Florida, 2 Powerful Solar flares occurred. An M5 and X1 Level. Could be a reason why the Hurricane intensified so quickly in such a short time the lakes and shore front in Louisiana were empty. The water there was sucked out just the same as in Tampa Bay.

It's not an island it's a sandbar that is called a, Barrier Island: "A barrier island is a constantly changing deposit of sand that forms parallel to the coast." This is tragic but insane, your only rebuilding till the next Hurricane hits and even then the most generous sea level rise predictions tell us 70% of Florida will be a sandbar at low-tide by the end of the century. Most of Florida will be uninhabitable with in 20-30 years tops. Look whats going on along the Saint Johns river, it's barely inhabitable now. Rezone it, demo the debris and give it back to nature for the brief time it has left.

24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them
I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and
beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not
shall be likened unto a (foolish man), which built his house upon the sand:

Most of Sanibel goes perpendicular to the coast not parallel. Which makes it unique. There going to rebuild just like every other beach town up and down the east coast that’s been hit by a hurricane. Some people just like the beach. Just ask the folks on the outer banks NC that gets hit every other year, if they will rebuild again. One of the biggest barrier islands. Just like Ocean City MD that rebuilt after a hurricane ripped them in half in 1933. The inlet it made was the best thing to happen to that area for commercial and recreational fishing. Not everyone wants to sit in middle America trying to stick their dick in a groundhog hole and hope it gets sucked.

These places should be beaches for people to enjoy and not a safe place to permanently live. Maybe some state owned souvenir shops and food vendors and possibly short term camping but NOT for private residences to all of these barriers for our state. Greed gave away this state land to begin with…

Lee county has nothing to do with Sanibel Island. Sanibel is self governed. Sanibel pays Lee County 250 thousand dollars a year just to use the causeway. Plus we pay a toll every time we cross it or pay for a transponder every year. Been connected to Sanibel 40 years and live here in a 700 sq ft mobile home with my wife as 100 other retired couples do. Also 3 low income complexes are on Sanibel and many mid range homes and condos. The high price condos are those that are used for rental for vacationers. Sure there are high prices on some homes just like every other places in the US. People need to know what they are talking about before making a statement.

It took decades to build it. If an aggressive rebuild were to happen, it seems it would be a place of construction hell. I support disaster relief but there are places in this world that shouldn’t take on so many permanent residents. Insurance companies will be the indicator of how wise the investment will be. If they refuse to cover, it’s a you’re on your own situation. The government at that point cannot fill in completely what the private sector might refuse to insure.

I can see Sanibel Island is in very bad shape. And I truly feel for the people who have lost everything. But to say it’s worse than Katrina minimizes what the folks went through in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. The homes in New Orleans were under water for weeks. Mobile and Biloxi had a 30-foot storm surge. Twice what they had in Sanibel. Homes weren’t just swept off their foundations. They were swept away. Completely! There was no debris because there was nothing left!! A foundation and stairs leading up to nothing. I was there. Almost two thousand people died from Katrina. Any death is sad. To compare the two is wrong. Really wrong. The survivors of Katrina shouldn’t be compared to anyone.

People like myself who renourish beaches knew this would happen. Fort myers and Sanibel beaches haven't been renourished in years and had very little beaches and zero dunes. Rebuilding there again is simply a horrible idea without a major beach renourishment and a system of highly elevated dunes for protection. Just look at Harvey Cedars Beach. The only beach community that had the proper protection in place and didn't get wiped off the earth in super storm sandy. Your leaders failed you imho including your governor. But yet he pats himself on the back every day for a political adgenda for filing in a huge pothole in front of a bridge but claims he rebuilt an entire bridge in a week. Give me a break.

It is not the taxpayers responsibility to pay for your so called luxury living in paradise. You will be hit again within five years of rebuilding as noted by the past- this is hurricane free for all areas of living. I again want to stress- the taxpayers have no, I repeat, no responsibility to help you fund your fun in the sun resort city. You pay for it; or you move. Go live outside of the hurricane path. In the past you have seen these hurricanes come in and you will see them again. it's simple- move out and live somewhere in a safety zone. Please send this message to that lady who thinks she is within her right to say she will rebuild; but she isn't within her right; the taxpayers will be asked to pay for this rebuild; and it should not be. Go find another place to live.

And if you didn’t have private flood insurance (or piles of cash) you are screwed federal flood insurance covers a maximum of $250,000 building replacement. You can’t build anything for that, especially when you are talking about pilings and raising a house to 15’ in the air. The question will be. How will the world house billions of people as they relocate and resources become less and less available. Homes of the future will need to be mobile, modular, stackable and renewable. Built from materials that are abundant and still lightweight (like honeycomb).
