- Floods in southern Russia and Kazakhstan forced tens of thousands of people out of their homes.
Melting snow has caused the Ural River to surge, and flood-defenses around the city of Orenburg to collapse. A rescue operation is underway, but locals say not enough was done to prevent the flooding in the first place.

He’s just another coward who isn’t bothered by human suffering. Wondering how insurance companies are going to handle this?
I'm no fan of Putin but I think it's silly when the chief of state shows up to these areas. It ends up distracting those organising the rescue and relief effort. Instead of dealing with the people they're creating a horse-and-pony show. A chief of state should be on the phone with them often, receiving video reports, and identifying bottlenecks to be ordered resolved. Send a few trusted advisors to monitor the situation on the ground to verify or debunk the reports being sent.
