As a financial advisor myself, Ben Felix's advice is SPOT ON. This video is a perfect demonstration of where paying an advisor for advice, even if you are a DIY "Boggle head," can bring tremendous value.
Every crash/collapse brings with it an equivalent market chance if you are early informed and equipped, I've seen folks amass up to $1m amid economy crisis, and even pull it off easily in favorable conditions. Unequivocally, the collapse is getting somebody somewhere rich.
The issue is people have the "I want to do it myself mentality" but not equipped enough for a crash, hence get burnt. Ideally, advisors are reps for investing jobs, and at first-hand encounter, my portfolio has yielded over 300% since 2020 just after the pandemic to date.

Ben, it astonishes me how well you describe my situation. I own around 2,7 mio in index funds and around 2 mio in rented out real estate....and I am still scared of going back into poverty. So I make my wife feel bad for paying 10€ more than I do for groceries, we used to drive a shitty car and now don't have one at all and we both work jobs that we don't really enjoy. On top of that you provide what amounts to a top notch financial education (without the math thankfully) for free as a public service. I've learned a lot from you which saved me from incurring needless losses and costs. Thanks a lot man! Of course I like every video and have been subscribed for a long time: more people ought to do so so you'll at least see some material reward for all the work that you do. Imagine if this became the standard for financial advisors: you'd need to need to know psychology, taxes, insurance, math and financial economics on top of mere knowledge of investment products. That is a tall order indeed. For some reason I doubt there are many such professionals to be found in the financial industry. I'd say there's a huge difference between a genuine financial advisor and a salesperson in finance pitching all kinds of crap to the detriment of their clients. Amazed by the simplicity of the idea you convey, Ben, I am a financial advisor in Argentina, and I always tell my clients that the idea of advice is to facilitate decision-making. Awesome video as always. When I was tasked with finding training materials for a fledgling support team at a FinTech startup Ben Felix was on the short list.
Excellent video. "Enough" can be surprisingly little. My monthly expenses are well below both the national average income and my income, and there is nothing money can buy that would further increase my happiness. I rent an inexpensive but beautiful apartment in the city I love, work only 35h/week in a fun job, and never have to worry about where the next meal will come from, or how to pay the bills. Quality time with loved ones is limited only by time, not budget. Therefore, my investment goal is simply "just in case". A year's worth of expenses in risk-free liquid assets, plus whatever is left at the end of the month goes into index funds, not expecting to sell any in the next 40 years.
This is a gem. After a month of reading other sound sources financial literature and re-watching this video, I find that it still nails every relevant point. Keep pressing on Ben. We appreciate your thoughts, presentation style and views.
As someone who is just starting out as a professional investment advisor, I can easily say that your channel is by far one of the most valuable resources on the web, not just RUclips. This video, in particular, has helped so much in figuring out my approach to financial advice, thank you!
Ben, from a young finance student I can't thank you enough for all the information you have put in your RUclips videos and in your podcast! such a big fan of all your content!
This guy deserves way more subscribers and views than he is getting right now. This stuff is way better than just about every other financial channel out there.
Congratulations on 200K subscribers! I've been following your channel for a year now. You've taught me so much already but I've never taken a moment to thank you for it (also commenting for the algo's). Thanks a lot Ben, your videos are invaluable. Greetings from the Netherlands.
This is now the only channel I recommend to other investors. Frankly, it's SO rational that people have a hard time believing it. It took me years of paying excessive fees to come around. Now more than half of my portfolio is "unmanaged" and half is "managed" even though it is all at a large brokerage. That cuts my fees in half. If you are informed and rational, it can actually make sense to have a portion of your assets managed and pay the fee for that. I get a lot of value from my advisor and he deserves to get paid. He struggled mightily when I began the shift to index funds but eventually, he chilled. His choices were either to go along or lose it all. Not shockingly, he went along.
I know this one even before I watch the video! Okay, so, good financial advice is advice where the advisor uses a lot of absolute confidence statements and makes a lot of guarantees, and where he says things that confirm what I already believe, and where he does not inform me about things I don’t already believe, which are things I would otherwise just ignore anyway, so that my current beliefs are strongly reinforced. Also, the advisor should rely on stories, witness testimony and anecdotes, but never on data. Okay now I’m going to watch the video and see if I’m on the right track!
Wait, I have been investing for more than 20 years now. This is probably the best advice I ever got. Setting goals and pursuit of enough. Good to know.
In Indian culture, there is a thing called 'santokh'. Meaning contentment/satisfaction , which is linked to what you describe as 'stopping the goal post from moving'.
This is one of your very best videos. Financial advisors are as much about philosophical mentorship as it is accounting like thinking. Sent through to some of my friends, definitely worth a share.

One of the things that I greatly appreciate about your approach to helping lots of people see the bigger picture is that you make this information extremely accessible. I’m not sure if you’ve explicitly stated why you do this, but you definitely seem to act like a person that’s trying to make the world better. At the very least, you’ve been able to make myself and my wife’s journey to financial independence one that is much more confident and fulfilling. Once we hit it, you can definitely expect some gifts from us even though we likely won’t be clients of yours (mostly because of the US/Canada thing).
Such a great video. As a fellow financial planner really enjoyed seeing this topic so well articulated. Great financial advice is about helping someone design the life they want, coaching to keep the plan on track and using expertise to ensure it arrives as fast as possible...not the common perception of picking stocks. Thanks Ben for excellent content! 👍

I agree. A financial planner has to give holistic advice based on the client’s goals and objectives. In Australia, the new regime in financial planning requires this approach with the financial planner being divorced from any product as all commissions in Australia are now illegal. Fee for service only.
Great video Ben that takes a step back and look at the larger picture. I've been debating on a career change in my 40s and had contemplated a shift to being a CFP, and knew that selling mutual funds in the big 5 was definitely not a direction I want to go. This notion of blending psychology and a financial "life coach" - both interests of mine - speaks much more to me now then telling people what ETFs to invest in. It's given me considerable food for thought, so thank you for the timely video.
I don't understand why videos like this don't have the same views from fake gurus. I wish more people will find this free and legit content! I really appreciate for your effort in making this videos!
Man, that was the perfect video for what i'm going through now. After 20 years of financial catch up and obsessing about it i'm well over where I need to be in terms of my own financial goals, but still obsess about it to no end. I've been recently trying to figure out ways to tone it down but its hard. This really helped.
LOVE THIS! I'm just starting out a new career as a financial coach, and this really is an excellent framing and explanation of what a good coach / advisor does, and it is good for me to have this specific list to inform my practice. Thanks, Ben!
Fantastic video, probably the only video I've seen on how a financial advisor should be that's really excellent, thank you I've shared it with a bunch of people.
This is great advice that purposely goes beyond the question of 'what ETF should I buy?'. Would love to see more content geared toward the rational side of behaviour influences on successful financial planning.
Mate, this is so much information... I was not prepared! Thank you so much! ❤ Please make it into smaller videos, and go into more detail on each bit. I feel like I need weeks of research to really understand this video. 😅
Great content as always Ben. Having been on a journey to understanding my finances over the last year, your insights along with a healthy dose from Jack Bogle has forever changed my formation behind the "why" we invest. Keep up the great work!
Fantastic video as always. There's a lot to think about regarding investing, asset allocation, taxes, goal setting so I can see how a sensible financial advisor could be of great value
Unfortunately I can't afford Ben's services, and there are very few professionals that are more than just stock/mutual fund sales people. I'm pretty happy with my diy setup, I'm not opposed to financial advice, but finding affordable advice that I trust is not exactly simple.

Quality time with loved ones is limited only by time, not budget.
Therefore, my investment goal is simply "just in case". A year's worth of expenses in risk-free liquid assets, plus whatever is left at the end of the month goes into index funds, not expecting to sell any in the next 40 years.
pretty much best video i have watched this year, this decade...... Thank you.

Your videos have always been great, but the quality continues to improve. Keep up the amazing work, and thank you so much for doing it!
Including relevant RR episodes is very helpful! Please continue doing it, if feasible.

In Indian culture, there is a thing called 'santokh'. Meaning contentment/satisfaction , which is linked to what you describe as 'stopping the goal post from moving'.
This is one of your very best videos. Financial advisors are as much about philosophical mentorship as it is accounting like thinking.

One of the things that I greatly appreciate about your approach to helping lots of people see the bigger picture is that you make this information extremely accessible. I’m not sure if you’ve explicitly stated why you do this, but you definitely seem to act like a person that’s trying to make the world better.

I agree. A financial planner has to give holistic advice based on the client’s goals and objectives. In Australia, the new regime in financial planning requires this approach with the financial planner being divorced from any product as all commissions in Australia are now illegal. Fee for service only.
Keep it up with these videos, Ben.

This was very helpful to watch as I start discussions with financial planners. Thank you!
