Great review of this plane. I have the 912IS and just love it. This 915 is amazing. How's the Sling coming along? Can't wait to see the finished project.
The LSA ASTM speed limit for anLSA is 120 KIAS. The Bristell LSA 915iS Turbo with ground adjustable prop will indicate 118 KIAS AT 12,500 FEET. It has a True Airspeed of 147 KIAS which is 170 MPH. That is fixed gear and ground adjustable prop...meets LSA ASTM standards.
I got a report of a very recent incident with the B23. The auto-pilot took control despite it was meant to be off. The only way the pilot/cfi was able to regain control was with the circuit breaker.
on paper at least the VL3 is substantially faster and cheaper. Of course VL3 cheats a little with retractable gear. Not sure how a USA version would compare, still cheaper though.
Dan Frederiksen Check out the Jean Marie Guisset on Facebook. 180 knots true at 12,000ft with the 915 iS in the VL3. The Bristell retractable gear 915 iS will do about 170 knots true at the same altitude.
Mike, your channel continues to grow and I celebrate your success. Basically anyone who wishes for a Bristellb but is more of a DIY builder, then the choice is obvious as the Sling TSI is all that for a fraction of the cost and can be modified/personalised where as a certified aircraft cannot. Bravo on your success, family and for documenting your personal build on youTube as your journey has and continues to inspire so many.
I know that this plane and the TSI are apples to oranges, but I'd still love to see a comparison vid since they're in the same price range (everything from number of seats to gear, missions, speeds, loads, fuel economy to instance, maintenance costs and operation costs). Well done review. The Vne of 157 is the best I have seen in an LSA other than the new 2020 Sting S4. The price seems insane to me, but I suppose they know their customers, kind of like Cirrus charging 900,000 but still having a backlog of SR22 orders.
I'm am avionics tech of 23 years and having worked on the Cirrus SR-series for the last 16 years, and I can tell you people who buy a brand new Cirrus are quite wealthy and don't balk much at maintenance and options. It still blows my mind, but they're good aircraft and they have pretty good speed for a fixed gear aircraft and respectable useful load.

I was thinking the same. Granted, I don't know anything about the LSA side of aviation, but I'm an avionics tech with 23 years experience, and I know for $289k you can get some very well restored Bonanzas for that kind of money. That being said, there may be more flexibility with experimental and LSA aircraft. I just prefer staying on the certified side of things. Still a beautiful aircraft. I'd make some changes to the panel if possible, but very nice.
yeah they are too expensive, although rotax is partly to blame. I thought I would have to shell out 100-150k to get into aviation but then I discovered fractional ownership. local club had a used one for sale as 1/8 fraction, suddenly I owned an LSA that's always available and being maintained for free for less than 10k. Even though we are 8 owners, it's very rarely used so it makes so much sense. Even if such a club isn't available right by you you can make one. Look for an interesting plane, gather a few people. It could be 4 buyers at first and then you can look for more owners if you want to dilute it more. Just a 4 way split really cuts down the cost and of course 8 way is like it's free. I bought a plane and it hardly registered in my finances. so yes GA is in a very sorry state and we need several revolutions but there is a good way even today. Next I'd like to co buy a VL3 915 her in Europe. With retractable gear. It goes almost 400km/h at altitude and that's almost workable speeds. And costs 'nothing' to fly. 1/5 that of an old junker Cessna.
@@rajpat89 I know. Especially crude carbon cubs are profoundly repulsively overpriced and people still buy them. But it can be so much better than what has been done. We can have pressurized twin jets for less than what a carbon cub sells for. Truly
Mike - Thanks for covering this plane! I am currently looking at a Bristell with 915is as my next aircraft. It's pricey to be sure, but that's a relative thing to ones income. It's interesting that they are starting to skirt the speed limits :) I think FAA should open LSA top speed and maybe only encourage moderate landing speeds. Keep the weight limit. I wonder how fast it can go at altitude. VL3 915 can do 380km/h which is bordering on decent.

this brings me to the question, what is the fastest LSA? whatever it is would have a turbo engine. an LSA only has to be limited to 138 mph at sea level right? you can go much fast at 10K without breaking any rules right?
Hey man thanks for the video really appreciate your channel as an aspiring pilot but quick question at $289,000 isn’t this about the same price as your TSI your building
The airspeed limitation is Knots indicated air speed. At 12,500 feet the airspeed indicator indicates 118 Knots and the True Airspeed is 147 knots or 170 MPH. It meets the LSA rules. It also weighs only 850, well under the max 900 pounds empty weight limit for an LSA.
@@louismancuso7128 1320 gross is max for a LSA in America. 190# in fuel + 850 =1040. 1320 -1040 = 280 pounds left for pilot, passenger and luggage. Not enough.
As a flight instructor, I have never understood why a plane such as this, with significantly more advanced capabilities and avionics, is not rated to fly in IMC when the C172 that we train out of is borderline falling apart at the seams with outdated avionics and is rated to fly in the clouds. I wish we could eventually upgrade to a platform such as this or similar one day.
The Bristell can fly IFR in IMC when equipped with a certified Avionics such as a GNX375 or GTN650 and the pilot is IFR rated. The plane needs to be re-registered as an ELSA which costs $1500. As an ELSA the owner can do his own maintenance.
Kevin The dial is what is controlling the pitch of the propeller which changes engine RPM. This particular aircraft is a SLSA and is not allowed to have a propeller that can change its pitch on the fly thus no dial is present on this one. Only throttle is needed on this one to control the engine manifold and RPM. Similar to being stuck in 3rd gear for takeoff and cruise.
There is an Air Master prop with Sensenich blades that has that switch. We are looking into that for the future. Right now that prop is not approved on an LSA. Some owners make the plane an ELSA and add items that could be questioned.
Looks sexy. Would be nice if it was capable of some basic aerobatic maneuvers. Hard to find a basic modern aerobatic plane that doesn’t have Extra 300 prices.

Mike, normally a big fan of your videos. Some balance needed on this review. if you search for 'caa bristell and spin warning', the Australian government have a lot to say about this aircraft.
Doug Flight A nice tempered reply. I feel that questions should always be asked especially when you see a relatively simple maneuver leading to fatalities.
Doug. It is highly offensive to the friends and family of those left behind to suggest the Irish fatal Bristell accident (G-OJCS June 2019) was an intentional spin. It was not. It was an unintentional fixed unrecoverable flat spin from 3000ft. Please be more sensitive.
@@martyryan2529 This conversation was about an Australian report and has nothing to do with an accident that occurred in Ireland. Do you have all the data from that crash? Where's the link? I have the data on the bogus Australian Report. Why? Because I own a Bristell and have the documentation from the FAA. Planes crash. All over the world. Some are from bad designs and some are from bad piloting or bad instructors. The Bristell has now been dissected by the FAA twice (only because of this reckless Aussie report). And now twice deemed safe and within the safety standards from the FAA. Why was that plane in a flat spin? Do you know that they followed the POH on how to do an engine on and engine off stall? There is a protocol for these maneuvers. If you go outside those parameters, you put your life at risk. In any airplane. FAA has removed spin training from US training. Instead they teach "DO NOT SPIN ANY PLANE". I've stalled my Bristell several times and it never went into a spin. NEVER. You need to be more sensitive to facts. I'm curious what your expertise is in...What do you fly?
Beautiful aircraft! it's probably 200k€ to get you into one of these, right?. By the way, love youre channel. always good info and fun to watch! Have you considered doing a video about the Graflight V8 Diesel engine. Interesting company out of Wisconsin that developed a Diesel V-8 from a clean sheet design. nothing repurposed like the many VW and Mercedes-Refits.
LSA’s are limited to 120 kcas at SEA LEVEL only. E-LSA does not provide for a speed increase. An LSA is an LSA. E-LSA allows for a manufactured aircraft with constant speed prop nothing more in this case. No 51% build rule just an airplane that is capable of 120+ kcas above sea level with CS prop. I should make it clear that a sport pilot is limited to 120KCAS max with endorsement, a private pilot does not have a speed restriction placed on them when flying an LSA.
Good narrative but rotax is still absurdly complex and vulnerable to coolant leaks/failure. Bristell should listen to Farry S. and have a Jabiru 3300 option.. Less expensive to buy plus half the scheduled maintenance and 1/4 the time required to properly, legally preflight.
Beautiful plane. Quite expensive. Very similar to the Sling TSi. But wait for the HIGH WING from Bristell. It will kill Cessnas.... The HIGH WING Sling will be also similar. They will take over the market for the next 10-15 years....
Two comments: 1. While 120K could maybe go to 140 we DO need speed and complexity limits for Sport Pilots. Their typical skill, training, experience levels ( and those of their CFIs) are inherently less than their private pilot superiors so they need simpler, less challenging aircraft they can keep up with . 2. You can thank Dan Johnson, LAMA, and AOPA for throwing up roadblocks that have postponed expansion of sport pilot aircraft eligibility . A simple increase to 1500 pounds MTOW would incorporate legacy aircraft like 150/152s, Colts, others that are affordable and can carry two American adults, baggage, and fuel yet remain within current performance parameters .Those three were more interested in protecting foreign manufacturers and fat cats than expanding the fleet to average Janes and Joes.
Bodyframe.... its fuselage.. terminology please. Even with the normally aspirated Rotax and 914 too, there no need for the pilot to calculate anything for the engine. Fadec means that the computer regulates the engine parameters, injection timing and such based on several sensors.
Correcting someone for proper phraseology/terminology is like calling in an airstrike on your own position. At the same time, go before an Examiner for an oral exam and see if you pass calling the fuselage of an airplane a "body frame ".
Why punish us with midroll adds, I never let any of them run if I can catch them, I doubt anyone else does either, put two adds up front and two at the end, I will let them run, and I encourage others to do the same. Most of us multi task, a midroll add can run from 3 or 4 mins to an hour plus, usually louder than the video itself, with subject matter we usually don't care about, when they come on we have to stop, run to the pc ,and shut it down. Midroll adds drive viewers to add free subscriptions and add free browsers, which diverts / eliminates the revenue stream away from content providers / channel owners.
@@georges. Maybe not in US. But most civil aviation authorities have differing definitions of what an LSA or a UL is. And although it is UL by weight the VL3 may not be considered Ul in a lot of countries because of the speed.

The Risen has the same engine yet can do 200mph/185mph cruise.
And wonder how much it cost lol
Beautiful aircraft! it's probably 200k€ to get you into one of these, right?. By the way, love youre channel. always good info and fun to watch! Have you considered doing a video about the Graflight V8 Diesel engine. Interesting company out of Wisconsin that developed a Diesel V-8 from a clean sheet design. nothing repurposed like the many VW and Mercedes-Refits.
$289,000
How does it make it in the LSA when it exceeds 120kts?
Many LSA can actually go faster than 120 kts. The speed is clocked out at 120 to remain in that category
A placard side steps the category ....nice airplane but expensive for the category...I’m building an RV12
A beauty for 270k
Just a few things;
1. Not an RG
2. Not pressurised
3. No air conditioning
Hello brother... I need a 2 silandar aircup engine.. Plz help ...
Has your research shown a constant speed prop is legal on an E-LSA?
Good narrative but rotax is still absurdly complex and vulnerable to coolant leaks/failure. Bristell should listen to Farry S. and have a Jabiru 3300 option.. Less expensive to buy plus half the scheduled maintenance and 1/4 the time required to properly, legally preflight.
Are you on Facebook by any chance? Would love to catch up with you on there. I will make sure and that the subscriber button 👍
Beautiful aircraft but 300k is a crazy price for this. I'm sure some of there competition can beat it.
Beautiful plane. Quite expensive. Very similar to the Sling TSi. But wait for the HIGH WING from Bristell. It will kill Cessnas.... The HIGH WING Sling will be also similar. They will take over the market for the next 10-15 years....

The high wing is on its way. Being tested right now
ruclips.net/video/vQcufzSzt6Y/видео.html
Will the high wing Bristell or sling be 2 or 4 seat. Because the cessna has 4 and that is quite a selling point although the back seat is small
You will see more details about the high wing Bristell B8 at www.sportflyingusa.com
For that much money I'd want to unlock the full top speed. We really need to get the stupid speed limits removed from the LSA regs.

Two comments:
@flexairz "...Even with the normally aspirated Rotax and 914[sic] too...."
Bodyframe… its fuselage.. terminology please [sic].
Correcting someone for proper phraseology/terminology is like calling in an airstrike on your own position. At the same time, go before an Examiner for an oral exam and see if you pass calling the fuselage of an airplane a "body frame ".
The Bristell 915 has considerable more performance than our 914.
The VL3 915 is not an LSA. You need a medical to fly this plane.
If this Bristell ever makes its way to Texas, more specifically Dallas, I would love to fly it!
N15lm. Max speed and distance. Just give the numbers. Fewer words. Not the same as. The numbers.
Why punish us with midroll adds,
I never let any of them run if I can catch them,
I doubt anyone else does either, put two adds up front
and two at the end, I will let them run, and I encourage
others to do the same.
Most of us multi task, a midroll add can run from
3 or 4 mins to an hour plus, usually louder than
the video itself, with subject matter we usually don't care
about, when they come on we have to stop, run
to the pc ,and shut it down.
Midroll adds drive viewers to add free subscriptions
and add free browsers, which diverts / eliminates
the revenue stream away from content providers /
channel owners.
Deathtrap. In Australia banned from doing stalls.
Please post link.
VL3 EVO with 915 will do around 200KTAS. 0.o
Not LSA. What' wrong with you people???
You are comparing our S-LSA to a plane that is not an LSA and does not have to follow ASTM LSA restrictions.
@@georges. Maybe not in US. But most civil aviation authorities have differing definitions of what an LSA or a UL is. And although it is UL by weight the VL3 may not be considered Ul in a lot of countries because of the speed.
