This song always reminds me of attending my first fitba match, a Scottish cup semifinal in Edinburgh v Dundee. I was in complete awe at the noise & occasion when this song was played before kick-off. Aberdeen won the game then went on to beat Celtic in the final. A happy memory right up there we the best of em.
It's like an old chain gang "spiritual". Didn't get any of it as a 14 yr old fan of TTT, I was just carried and enamoured by the sound n vibe.....and now, as a jaded and ageing anarchist and activist I can appreciate the rallying cry of this song! Fuxkin fantastic........2024 WTF IS RISING UP?!
We survived the fear of atomic Armageddon during the height of the 'cold war' back then. We're still here, thank God, and 80's music is as relevant and cool as it was back then.
Me and mum used to secretly play this 45 single before bed! when my sister was out - it was her record! Loved it! The beginning did remind me of Culture Club!
Me too! I hear you loud & clear, but ill tell you what warms me no end - when I see 16 yr olds commenting how lucky us old timers are to have lived in the days of this material - & it happens A LOT on you tube, They also go onto say they have no interest in the music of their generation. The early - mid 80s was more a place than it was a time - & we were right there!
@daynasmum529 seems like music snobbery from people who were around in the 80s has rubbed off too... My son loves the music of my era, but he also has a lot of music of his own generation that he likes - and having listened to some of his favourites of the last decade or so, I've realised that some of this generation's music is actually very good, and that there are still a lot of genuine talents about. If you naively dismiss an entire era, you lose out, and miss a lot stuff that you'd like if you gave it a chance (as I did)...
Some songs have so many pieces in them that are really good to take with you everywhere and sing in your heart when you get in trouble. If it looks like there's trouble coming and somebody's going to be wanting to jump on me and maybe modify my appearance by knocking dents in me I can scream that in my heart ."I know what it means to work hard on machines" it makes me think of those days on the boats when I was cornered like a rat and I either had to win or I had to die.
Hey Lovely🤗, with the hope in eyes, you Thompson Twins, The Scots/Celts, Beccs, Greg, Nige and Ben Habib (or course two Ben, I just couldn't think) Sorry Mr Habib xx
Well, living the "Hippie life" at this time, I WAS buying record's, including T T etc. but NO T V, so never saw these video's or TOTP's. I can see the enjoyed making this one..... Alway's enjoyed the fun music of the T T's.....
Oi, TT's; Take him up, Take him out, in a good way - Cheers 🍻🍾🍷🍸💃🏼🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻- It's your labour of love, I long to meet you all and tell you why - Love Always Olivia ❤ ☘️xx💎💫
Old as$ new waver-woke with this song in my head-so many times this song has forced its way to the top of my internal play list-Love love loove Thompson Twins!!❤❤ ❤
Being born in 1977, so ultimately, a child of the 80s. I can honestly remember thinking how shit the music was, but man, I was so wrong! Admittedly, I like all sorts from OG 80s hip hop - Belgian Techno, but I take it all back. I mean, what the f*** did I know? And if you had said, "Here is 40 years in the future?" I'd have said, "Forget you sucka! I'm staying put in the 80s."

I worked on a blood stain riverboat for 12 years we lost people and we worked hard we had no rights under the law you are a little more than an animal and this was my song. I know what it means to work hard on machines.
Really the most wrong video of my teenage years and still one of my favorite songs. BURN the video out of my head and just love when the song comes up on my list in the car. ❤😂😊❤
What a great song, what a shame only 45k views. Younger generation missing out on a cool song.
86k now!!
@@mrlister2000149k now!
I'm obsessed with this song at the moment
How a song should sound
Brilliant

Bang on
Reminds me of loves lost
Oh yes
@glennspencer where are they now I wish I had more sense then she would have been mine for life
Yes Tom I do believe in love that lasts for all time, because we're at nearly 40 years on and I still can't get enough of this song😂
Me too. Always brought me up when I was so down.
Ditto for me!
Absolutely..❤🥰🥳🥳🎶🎶👊

Same!
Working song vibes
Coal Miner Buddies
Probably the first band showing a female in a grafting (equal) role……🙏🙏👏🏻👏🏻
Boy, the lyrics sound like a beautiful love song. The video, on the other hand, is quite dark & painful 😮
They were singing about Jesus..😉🥳👍
Nope! 😂
Wooh !!!
Im not sure why LIFTS
SP RING TO MI ND.
when i hear this toob
I saw Tom Bailey with his band tonight in Washington, DC. They were excellent. He is still such a strong and charismatic performer.
Seeing him on Wednesday in Toronto. Can't wait!
Just saw him on July 20 in Bushkill, PA. Great show!
Headliner for the Totally Tubular tour in Cincinnati OH July 27th, it was so good! Still sounds exactly the same!
I remember this when it was released. What a golden age the 80s was.
The closest they ever got to number one in the singles chart. I think it was blocked by Hello by Lionel Richie.
Gen X
Golden age because I was in my twenties. Thompson Twins was and is one of my favorite groups. I was sad when they broke up.
My son has a Thompson Twins tat on his neck. Brought up in the 80s with my love of indie music and the influence of my wonderful friends..
I wore this cassette out back in 80's. Glory days.
...same! ;-)
wellguess what im 76 and WILL ALWAYS LOVE the THOMPSON TWINS.theur music IS GREAT❤️❤️❤️👍💓👌💋
My absolute favorite TT song. I took a lot of nonsense for being a fan, but they are still amazing imo.
Me Too 😁
I was one doing the ridiculing....how wrong was I?.....40 yrs on and with an old head they are very very good

It was all fear based propaganda, nothing has happened to those so called nukes..
Looking foward to seeing Tom Bailey in concert in Manchester on Monday night.
How does this not have more views / likes? It's a travesty...😢
Me and mum used to secretly play this 45 single before bed! when my sister was out - it was her record! Loved it! The beginning did remind me of Culture Club!
These songs make me sad. I miss those days when life was easy

Life wasn't easy then... Far from it. You were just young and naive
We really had no clue how good we had it. 😢

@@DaveAndBeth1978 Agreed - there are some really good acts around but I still think we had a greater & more diverse abundance.
Happy tears. This song is so uplifting.
Haven't heard this since the mid 80s
I remember they played an incredible mix of this song in 1985 at the Zanzibar in Newark, Nj!! Memories!!!!!

Just discovering the music in Donkey Kong Country 1!
Music fans told TT "You Take Me Up" with this song/video four decades ago! TT held its own in the Mid 80s!
10/10 song
Way underrated.
