Yeah, Ricky! I think you should imagine your business without Google. (Or, you should imagine without any one point of failure...) Google is not aiming for quality results. The search team is in a horrible spot!
It always has been. Lisa Parmley (a well known SEO back in the day - was one of the first to use the term authority site)...said as much in the mid-noughties. If Google isn’t careful, they will end up like Yahoo. I remember when people left Yahoo because it was cluttered with ads. They moved to Google because it was so clean and efficient.
What alternatives to Google do you like more? Maybe this should be a community poll actually. But it would be interesting to see if people are already jumping the Google ship.
Google is more of a behemoth than Yahoo ever was because of the tie into the 1 account into all google service like Chrome, Android, Waymo, RUclips, Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Search, AdSense, Cloud, etc. The switching cost even though most of the services are 'FREE' is very high when you use 1 account on so many products/services.

Apple, Google, Netflix are in that middle to late stage of nowhere to grow, optimise and manage and squeeze out all the value you can. Not sure where Amazon is, probably somewhere close to that too.
That's frustrating to hear! I actually mentioned a while back (over 6 months ago) that I disagreed with your perspective and mentioned "follow the money." I can definitely relate. I run a legitimate tour operator with a successful RUclips channel (over 100,000 subscribers!). We have the best, most up-to-date information on our website, but still get buried by Google's algorithms. Hi Frank! That's interesting. I am in the travel niche too and what I saw so far is, that usually business owners, tour operators, etc. with very 'niched down' sites didn't get hit from the recent Google HCUs. It seems I was wrong :( Grüße aus Deutschland

In other words, Niche Site SEO is dead unless you're Reddit, Forbes etc. Even if you were to craft the highest quality article known to mankind as a startup brand, you're never gonna rank well on Google anymore

Lesson number 1: Google does not give a crap about YOU. Lesson number 2: Never forget lesson number 1. Diversify ones source of traffic, and never be reliant on Google traffic solely. Lesson learned back in 2012.
@@All_Things_Biblical Pinterest, You tube, Tic Tok, IG, X, Reddit, and FB for starters. Yes, it requires a fundamental change from the business as usual of blogging...
Perplexity and Bing Copilot do it right. They at least clearly reference their AI summaries to the source. Duck Duck Go and Yahoo uses much of bing results intermixed as well as other minor (meta) search engines.
@@All_Things_Biblical by not means an expert here but, what I'm hearing around is that 'the information age' is ending. Now everyone is beggin for transformational experiences. Just look around and you'll find that many are wrapping their content as 'Challenge courses', Cohorts and experiential learning and things of the like. So in short make fabulous content but wrapped it up with experiencial learning that would bring a solution not only information to people. This, of course would be of more value it youself have lived that experience in the first place.
When corporations get big enough, you can always count on them to do the wrong thing. Google's mantra of "Do No Harm" hasn't been true for a very long time, and it started when short-term cash grabs started becoming their top priority.
You're thinking of the hippopotamus oath. Google's motto (before they went public and became an amoral profit-generating machine) was "don't be evil". Similar tho - your point stands. In 2015 they adopted a new motto, "Do the right thing", but they never specified for who's perspective. Google does a lot of things that are the right thing for Google and Google alone.
The answer is to stop using Google. If enough people do it something else will prosper. Google has actually been losing relevance for a couple of years. I know a number of local businesses for instance who get by despite not having a website, they rely on Facebook and word of mouth.
google KNOWS most people will start to get their answers from AI so its becoming an ad platform on purpose before their search engine business gets killed off by AI. at least theyll make the most money possible before theyre killed off by AI

Google 2024: We sneaking in ads where we can and trying to steal your content lulz we don't care anymore. Also gl with your websites, we already scraped your content so if you fail we will just rehash it in our AI Gen hahaha THAT is why we have to fight against monopolies
On point! I hope as many website owners realize that their content is stolen and reworded by "artifficial intelligence" - just a pompous name for algorithms specialized in stealing everything that mankind has written, spoken and even drawn and spinning it into something else to make money, bypassing copyright laws
Google: make sure to write your own experiences, write helpful content, share your original images, add value to the SERPS.... Then we are going to steal it all from you and create our own content from your content.
The only time I ever click on an ad in the SERPs is when I specifically searched for a company, i.e. "leather shoes amazon", and see an ad pop up for that company. I think to myself: "Really? You're running ads for that search query? I was already determined to find your company specifically... but if you're stupid enough to run that ad, then I'm going to make you pay for my traffic... *Clicks on ad*
This is the first time in awhile where I feel like Blogging is 100% dead. It might be fine if you already have a presence established in the search results, but for new folks who think that you will be able to rank in the search results, think again. Or if you do rank, the rank isn't going to stick very long. The blogging dream is pretty much over. It had a good run though. Time to jump on the AI train and find other ways to make money.
Good thoughts. But I think there are other ways to get traffic. It's definitely not dead. People will search for information all the time and it will increase with time.
The day my website was approved to run ads was the day I lost 90% of traffic...Now I am unsure whether to continue or not.Spent so much money on hosting, not to mention the hardwork I put into it for two years...I'm done!!!
Ricky, I’ve followed Income School, you, and your team for years. I appreciate this video, however, it kinda feels like, “it’s true now that it’s happening to us.” Some of the more recent videos have felt a little tone deaf, in my opinion. So many great content creators have been affected, myself included, and now it kinda sounds like you’re saying the same thing that many in your audience have been saying for a while now. I hate it for all of us but we have to adapt.
@@MasterCoachUniversity I don’t get the impression that Ricky is that kind of person. I more look at it as a “roll of the dice” (and a bit of stubbornness) from a content creator perspective, if he was right - great for him, if not, a little egg on face, but nothing that can’t be cleaned up.
in fairness to Ricky .. he's been overly optimistic through the HCU and the March Core update .. and a lot of his sites have taken a hit in organic search ... At least finally now he admits that he was overly optimistic about Google which was obvious .. I've seen the stance change gradually since September.. back then it was "this is just another update, ive seen people freak out every couple of years .. " to today .. It's weird that it took an article like that when the SERPs you use every day is right in front of you with unhelpful contents .. Sidenote: that's my biggest gripe with Google if you're gonna serve unhelpful content with your update.. don't call it the "helpful content update" ..
You didn't know what the truth was either. You were simply speculating. Income School is by far more honest than most SEO RUclipsrs out there. He didn't misrepresent anything.
@@MasterCoachUniversitynot all websites were hit. I have websites that weren't hit. You come to this man for answers and then get mad at him when he's figuring it out, along with us all.
Great stuff Ricky! this is the video most of us at Income School were waiting for. Very brave of you to have done it. Many of us believe that the only way to survive is to disregard google and get traffic from social media and email marketing. But can it be sustainable?
The positive is that there will always be channels where people interested in a topic gather. The negative is that it's not going to be passive like writing a blog post and making money from ads. There will be a lot more involvement expected to keep people engaged.
@@krod16 exactly. Much more work is involved and not sure it can succeed. Are you Krod who was very active on IS forums. I really miss your very helpful input!
Most of my traffic comes from Pinterest. This video explained so much for me about why I keep finding reddit posts when I am searching for my own personal inquiries. Even though I started my website first and it was monitized first, my youtube channel is doing much better. The website for me became secondary. I believe you just answered why.
Awesome piece Ricky. Thats whats been happening. Due to one search engine monopolizing search industry. Glad you raised your voice against this action.
I remember a time when our politicians actually enforced the no monopoly policy meant to protect consumers, the electorate, smaller businesses and the economy.
@@SchneiderMediaConsultingmeh, the new status quo is all about whoever can steal the most content and repackage it while on autopilot (chatgpt, midjourney etc). Honest people won't succeed at that unfortunately.

High rank of reddit is actually driven by consumer request. You can see many people on social media saying that they often have to add "reddit" to the end of search queries to get the information that they are actually looking for. High rank of quora is bizarre to me. Quora mainly revolves around personal essays.
Yet another example of "don't put all your eggs in one basket." It is a lot of work, but as entrepreneurs, business owners, or marketers, we have to be efficient in several channels at the same time and have some fluency in SEO, Paid Ads, Direct Marketing, Funnels, Social Media, Email Marketing, Webinars, SMS... We must think very carefully about our strategy so as not to depend heavily on only 1 or 2 channels. Similar thing happened with Amazon cutting affiliate commissions, Google Plus disappearing, Google Ads implementing the Consent Mode in Europe, Social Media Algorithms prioritizing promoted posts in feeds...etc
Great video. Does this make you think twice about trusting in/relying on RUclips at all since RUclips is owned by Google? Not that we should write off RUclips (obviously), but I’m just curious on your feelings about possible changes to RUclips.
I have already noticed big changes in RUclips algorithms in the year and a half. Medium monetized channels receive fewer views in favor of small non-monetized ones, so YT doesn't-t have to share ad revenue
Haha. We all thinking the same thing. This is why I am setting up email and push on my site. So wherever the traffic comes from, I can get them to subscribe and return once I push out an article. We can't trust any traffic source we can't control. Simple!
I was just about to say the exact SAME thing! The Ads before a video starts has gone from 5 seconds to 60 seconds in many cases, which is insane. It's all one of the same, but we have to navigate the best we can given that they're all free platforms that we do not own. It's rented territory, so diversification is the only solution.
Now I see why the last videos get frustrating comments. Its hard to hear this from Ricky knowing its truly game over!! Not that I wasnt aware a long time but its more concrete when it comes from people who get actual results in the industry. My site died since September, 2023.
Creating meaningful and good content will always be the best long-term strategy. Even huge platforms like Google will decline at some point, and then your content will be still relevant for whatever the next platforms look for. For me, Pinterest has been a huge traffic source for years, now I get more from Google. It will shift eventually. The most important part is to spread content in multiple ways, and one will always perform. RUclips has been a slow burn for me, but I get people who are much more interested in my stuff than on any other platform.
So sorry Ricky, I've been hearing this for awhile now and seeing it for myself, you are such a great mentor for blogging. Thanks for sharing this info.
I haven't touched my site for 6 months or more. Indeed I haven't even looked at the site but maybe once a month. I did notice a giant loss of traffic a month or two ago. I just thought it was because Google thought my site was inactive and once I went back to writing here in a few months it would go back up. But now that you mention all this, I'm not so sure. Guess I'll investigate here in a few months, when I go back to writing.
The reality is that most viewers skip the ads unfortunately. So even though there are more ads for viewers . Viewers watch fewer ads. It's a good idea to watch at least 1 to 2 ads all the way for every hour you're watching content, especially if you enjoy the content creator. It helps 😁
A way to counterattack this loss of quality, would be to have bots clicking automatically on ads (promotions) on Google results. As advertisers will pay more and more, their ROI for advertising with Google will go down. Ultimately, companies paying Google will ask it to go back in serving few, useful ads that look like ads. And when who pays ask, Google listens.
Reddit probably gets a massive boost based upon engagement. Blog posts probably have a way quicker bounce rate overall. Sometimes just reading the comments on reddit or quora is educational and straight comedic. Probably a similar metric for RUclips videos as well. I always skim the comments for any value.
If Google's aim is to service their shareholders, they depend on ad revenue. If they screw up the search experience for the actual Google customer, then the customers will go elsewhere to get their search queries answered. Google are shooting themselves in both feet right now. So frustrating!
Just the truth. I'm doing more how tos now. Even social media companies may start using AI assistants in chats. So more and more people won't even need to come to Google for info content anymore. All you do with info content now is feed AI
Traffic from google is actually very small part of your idea audiences for free. Keep that in mind and you will not care. I'm sure google can see something is happening that you and me can't. The old world has gone!
Well crap! I’m a new Project24 member. And have already invested a ton of time, energy, and money in this program. But whats the point of writing another 87 articles if they aren’t even gonna be seen? RUclips is fine and Dandy for the personality types who are comfortable with that. CRAP!!!
There’s good discussion in the community. We’re already talking about this stuff in the podcast. More course updates will be here soon. But starting off with a foundation of solid content is still going to be really valuable.
It depends on the niche. And other search engines will rank your blog accurately so as people move away from Google it will still be relevant. Try Dogpile if you live in the US.
I am trying to start two new blog websites and have seen these changes. Very frustrated as all I want to do is help but these changes are very high friction-if I had known this was on the roadmap, I would not considered. I did pivot to a newsletter. Thank you for your guidance. I will make further changes. Five star video - appreciate the transparency.
Also of note: tricking people into clicking on an ad by making it look like a search result also drops the conversion rate for the business, so it benefits no one. Its just theft.
It's because the last two years, there was a study that TikTok has overtaken Google as the go to search engine among GenZ. Which likely explains their use of placing Reddit and Quora for.search results. I assume.they think that GenZ uses those platforms as well and use it to try and outdo TikTok.
And GenZ doesn't go to Google if they want to read Reddits. They go directly to Reddit. They have notifications set up from Reditt for their topics of interest.
I love this guy. Don't even know his name. Just passed him on RUclips a heap of times. When I see his face, I just feel happy and want to listen. *because listening is always a good experience.
I wonder if Google's current business focus is related to falling Ad rates. We look to be either in recession, or heading there soon. As rates will be one of the first revenue sources to tank in a recession, so maybe Google is sacrificing search quality to plug losses. Hopefully, on the other side of the recession, search quality will again become a priority.
I've watched your videos from the very beginning, Ricky, tuning in from time to time. This was one of the best ones yet. You're right about it-since 2019, they've thrown us (the good content creators) under the bus. Horrible! We could be in agony, and they wouldn't care. They told us to keep creating, yet they rewarded garbage websites.
Ricky, I've been working online since 1997. Most of the modern day 'seo' people I have seen ARE trying to game the system. They're not writing for users, they are writing for search engines. They just don't seem to get it. Now, with the advent of AI, there has been a massive increase in BS and spam sites. Its got to a point where user generated content on forums is more likely to give you a straight answer than having to read through an 1800 word article. No wonder they're putting a huge emphasis on user metric like engagement time. I'm not endorsing everything Google does, but the days of programmatic content and AI driven sites that we are in now is destroying user experience.
Well, all the best because User generated content on forums is now spam thanks to this update. SEOs just moved to these forums like Reddit and 50% spammed the comments there with affiliate comments. That's not the solution. Instead, it's made search worse. Basically, Google are incompetent to figure out quality content and washed their hands to Reddit.
@@IncomeSchool Appreciated, Ricky. I think your channel is, frankly speaking, in the minority of channels producing genuinely helpful content. Even on RUclips, most of the supposed SEO advice is frankly BS. The thing is not to give up, keep doing things properly and the rewards will come.
unfortunately thousands upon thousands of really good websites got hit bad. Lost almost all their traffic, My local sites are fine but my hobby sites are not. And I have real first hand experience, original photos I take myself, etc. and still got smacked down the SERPS.
Respect for admiting this. Google has failed us but I think they've succeeded in their goal. They have decimated the quality of search in the pursuit of profit. I came to this conclusion early this year and shut down my website.
Good evening, I am an Italian social media manager, and I have purchased and watched your "Project 24" course. First of all, congratulations, you've helped me understand so much more. I have a question: "I follow an osteopath's profile. Initially, they weren't sure what to specialize in, so we posted quite diverse videos, some on orthopedics, some on pediatrics, and some on visceral topics. Given that there are videos going viral in all these areas, should we continue to post on all these broad topics or specialize in just the visceral aspect? Initially, I thought that in the long term, it wouldn't be advisable to post videos on all the broad areas because the audience we would attract might not be interested in all the areas, but only in one specific area (for example, the audience interested in an orthopedic disorder might not engage with pediatric content, so it would be counterproductive). So, I initially thought it would be better to specialize in just one area (visceral) and, perhaps, if we wanted to make videos on other topics, we should consider bringing a theme and a way of speaking that would engage the respective audiences (for example, a video that talks about how a stomach disorder can also lead to cervical problems), thinking that if we made a video only on cervical issues, it would attract people interested in orthopedic disorders and not those interested in visceral ones. Then I remembered how you switched the topic of your "Income School" channel to cater to an audience of content creators, who are not just interested in blogging, and so I ask you: "By bringing in videos that deal with RUclips, for example, won't you attract an audience only interested in the RUclips topic? Which then might hold back your videos on other topics, like blogging or SEO?"
I so think the same with your 'aside' comments around the 12 minute mark. It saddens me, as I'm a stock market guy; but the way it works (at least at the larger end of town) drives me as crazy as you.
This brings up a question/scenario that I'd love your take on. Worked for home services company (concrete patios, sidewalks etc) and they relied on homeadvisor and Angi list leads. Well the start of the season greatly reduced leads and worse quality. Begged them for me to start creating YT videos, original content etc. Does this change you describe with Google have any effect on that scenario. Thanks for your perspective.
And all social media channels will update their algorithms to keep traffic from leaving. So blog traffic from FB, Pinterest, Instagram, Quora and others will likely decline once those platforms realize bloggers are linking out more often.
RUclips also suspends RUclips channels on a whim... many channels get shut down if they get hacked, with no notice from google to fix it, they get shut by mistake, and it takes months to get your channel back if you are in the right. Ask me how I know. AND the worst part is you are never allowed to have a channel again if your suspension is not lifted. Thankfully, I did not give up. It took me 6 months to get my channel back.
Are you still planning on teaching the organic content-driven business model (just less reliant on Google SERP), monetizing with ad revenue, affiliates, and info products, or are you thinking about venturing more into paid acquisition model, monetizing with physical products too?
I believe I got SIX sponsored results to a search yesterday on one sinke search. There's a reason why Google is beginning to be shunned now. They ain't what they used to be.
Honestly, it’s because there are so many crappy blogs making you scroll so far for a simple answer and recommending you buy things with affiliate links.
Love the sincerity. I've always counted on you to say the truth. I think this is the truth. Other top bloggers were quick to promote reddit and flipboard and whatever just to stay relevant, but you didn't. You're so mature man. You're not driven my money and fame and clicks. God bless you. It dawned on me yesterday after seeing a video with Google filling the place with ads. But the question was what do we do? I had mixed feelings about writing. But this video has just boosted me again. I can continue writing and exploring knowing I'm not alone in this. Good video man 🤝
Why are they showing reddit? Because people (often) use "reddit" in their searches. Isn't that well known? Also there used to be a separate "discussions" tab (like videos/images), dunno why they removed that.
Rand's insights highlight an essential shift in SEO strategy. As Google's algorithms evolve, content creators need to adapt by understanding how different types of content are being prioritized and explore diverse platforms to ensure visibility. 👍
I started a Subreddit for my blog before I knew this was happening. I'm now kinda intrigued to see if it does anything for the blog. Also, did someone say Pinterest? XD
Theres an ad network that bloggers use to make more money. Im going brain dead of the name. I checked several successful blogs who had a full-time income off the ad revenue. There was too many ads and a video ad that would play at the bottom as you scroll. It was so distracting trying to read the blog. The blog content was ok but too much fluff to add to word count. I'm pretty sure these type blogs got hit. As a reader bullet points and info graphics are very helpful to me.
With the original founders, Google had no problem with ignoring investor demands. They famously said something like: Looking at monthly results is like a dieter stepping on the scale daily. A long term vision is more important. With Larry and Sergey gone, mediocre managers entered Google and they started managing Google in a mediocre way. I hope Larry and Sergey decide to step in and fix this mess. It's the only way. You can't expect the current management to fix the mess they created themselves. Their philosophy is the problem. People don't change their basic principles. If you want to change the basic principles on which a company rides, you need to replace the people with people with different philosophies.
I wonder if Google is also avoiding blog posts because they fear that more blog posts are written by AI. Defaulting to forum answers from Reddit might mitigate that if Google thinks Reddit does a good job of keeping their forums free from AI bots/answers.
I am not saying it will be easy, but the way I am approaching this is collaborations with other influecers and niches. It´s like the only thing you can control. I have been building my website with that in mind. I am heavily into RUclips but I won´t even trust that.

Thanks for acknowledging and addressing this! I was looking forward to a video like this.
I’ve known this for 15 plus years. Everyone Google says “don’t do something” and you do it, you rank.
Lesson number 1: Google does not give a crap about YOU. Lesson number 2: Never forget lesson number 1. Diversify ones source of traffic, and never be reliant on Google traffic solely. Lesson learned back in 2012.
Indeed! What else do you suggest we use as alternative search engines?

@@All_Things_Biblical by not means an expert here but, what I'm hearing around is that 'the information age' is ending. Now everyone is beggin for transformational experiences. Just look around and you'll find that many are wrapping their content as 'Challenge courses', Cohorts and experiential learning and things of the like. So in short make fabulous content but wrapped it up with experiencial learning that would bring a solution not only information to people. No baby chicks were harmed during the making of this video...because Google hasn't gotten around to that yet.

Google 2024: We sneaking in ads where we can and trying to steal your content lulz we don't care anymore. Also gl with your websites, we already scraped your content so if you fail we will just rehash it in our AI Gen hahaha
THAT is why we have to fight against monopolies

High rank of reddit is actually driven by consumer request. You can see many people on social media saying that they often have to add "reddit" to the end of search queries to get the information that they are actually looking for.
High rank of quora is bizarre to me. Quora mainly revolves around personal essays.

It is a lot of work, but as entrepreneurs, business owners, or marketers, we have to be efficient in several channels at the same time and have some fluency in SEO, Paid Ads, Direct Marketing, Funnels, Social Media, Email Marketing, Webinars, SMS...
Do you think I should rewrite my blog post on quora and reddit?

Simple!
@@digitalbizweb Most of the email used is Gmail. So that also is controlled by Google. Recently, in the news, they were blocking Outlook emails.

To Google: if you spam me an ads for 1000 times, that product will be in my blacklist.
I believe niche site SEO has become obsolete after a long time.
To sum it up SEO for infomational content is basically dead, at this point you will only feed their ai.
Just the truth. I'm doing more how tos now. Even social media companies may start using AI assistants in chats. So more and more people won't even need to come to Google for info content anymore. All you do with info content now is feed AI

Also of note: tricking people into clicking on an ad by making it look like a search result also drops the conversion rate for the business, so it benefits no one. Its just theft.
I totally agree
It's because the last two years, there was a study that TikTok has overtaken Google as the go to search engine among GenZ. Which likely explains their use of placing Reddit and Quora for.search results. I assume.they think that GenZ uses those platforms as well and use it to try and outdo TikTok.
and joining Mark Zuckerburg in lobbying against TikTok...
Hmmm I just quit my blogs and sites. GOOGLE doesn't care abouts quality, just about generating revenue at our expense.
This is the part of what I said in recent videos that I whole heartedly stand by! Thank you, I agree.

How many people use BING? Can we focus on them?
Not at all. I would definitely still do this.
1:10 that is more than likely because of the number of affiliate sponsored sites that aren't that truthful
Before everyone goes all in on RUclips do remember - RUclips is also, a Google product
I can't wait until X has a video platform that can compete with RUclips.

In other news, OpenAI are planning to launch their own AI-powered search... and as G's results are so bad now, I hope they do.
I wonder if Google is also avoiding blog posts because they fear that more blog posts are written by AI. Defaulting to forum answers from Reddit might mitigate that if Google thinks Reddit does a good job of keeping their forums free from AI bots/answers.
