    I think I slightly disagree with the idea that if you use references that it's not your own art. It's a slippery slope. That seems a bit extreme considering the majority of the most popular artists in the world have used references for a lot of their art.
    Logically if you claim your art isn't your own if you use references then anything you learned using references isn't your own. It's just an accumulative knowledge base of all the references you previously used. It still technically means you are using references, it's just now you don't need the physical reference in front of you.
    I mean let's not kid ourselves here. Everything we draw is a copy to some degree off of something or someone else's work. We claim it as our own because it's different and transformative enough because only 1 - 2% came from somewhere else. Using a reference doesn't invalidate all that work.

    • @SilvyReacts
      @SilvyReacts 6 лет назад +18

      I get what you are saying is that the 1 - 2% means it's not completly your own, but I think at that point you are just splitting hairs.

    • @mikeymegamega
      @mikeymegamega  6 лет назад +114

      Oh doesn't invalidate what you do at all!^^ But what I'm trying to do is encourage people to ween off of the copying part of their brain and into the recall/create part, even if that might be copy by memory! and FYI I use references loads!

    • @SilvyReacts
      @SilvyReacts 6 лет назад +52

      Ahh, I see ... it just seemed like an odd way to put it. XD
      I do agree, it's better to wean off of copying as much as possible. I find the more you do, the more creative you can be. Typically the issue with copying is you end up sacrificing a lot of areas that could be altered to better fit a drawing. A person drawing a pose from reference might stick to it too strictly even if it doesn't entirely suit their vision because they don't know how to alter it. Even if they notice it they may not do anything to fix it. It's a trap I have fallen in on more than one occasion. XD Luckily, I seem to not make that mistake anymore. I didn't like being restricted like that. Maybe I want an entirely different angle of a pose from reference, or maybe I want to alter the pose itself a bit. Maybe I want to draw it with some sort of distorted FOV. Maybe an entirely different body type. By relying too much on copying, it's really hard to do that.

    though i already discoverved the "breaking down reference" technique/method on my own to improve my own art, this video is still entertaining to watch.
    Though my method of breaking down pose is a little different, i dont actually trace images to breakdown into references. What i do is by looking at images and observe the horizontal line of a hip and shoulder.

    I swear as much as I like to follow a lot of really good artists, you're the only one with wich each video I feel like I learn a whole lot. More like "I learn everything you meant to teach in this video" and I do not know why.
    Maybe im meant to be a master of ecchi like yourself in the future. 😃
    Anyways, Im usually putting aside my art all the time, but now I'll put a bit of this on practice hoping my hand didnt forget how to do the very little art I had :D

    • @FSenseii
      @FSenseii 6 лет назад +1

      Blue Wolf Trivia: famous anime\manga artists started with hentai doujins. Drawing ecchi isn't really bad per se, because you can draw the naked body more detailed so that even if you clothed them, the anatomy won't look bland or imperfect! :)

    This might be a weird thing to say.....but I think this is what I'm gonna focus on entirely for the next month. I just started attempting ot draw, and I eventually do want to get into more anime-ish, style of art, but since I'm an absolute beginner, I think my best course of action is to just focus on breaking stuff down for my first month at least.

    I'm picking up art after having not really done much in it in a few years, and i must say, your videos are AMAZING. I'd really love to get into digital art, character and manga/webtoon drawing and your videos are super helpful. I first noticed your video on the GT 220 V2 monitor, i'm trying to get one in the next month or two.. would you still recommend? Right now i'm using a basic huion with no screen, it's probably 12 inches right now, but it's difficult for me to use because i can't see what i'm doing, and i ihave to have it flat or it stops responding. Also, i dropped a sub, i've been checking out lots of your videos, love your work and personality, very modest. ^_^

      One point perspective (center point)
      Two point perspective (where the horizon is)
      Three point perspective (known to be more dynamic)
      Fish eye view (looking through a peep hole of the door)
      From there, shapes will be used.
