I have been researching the origin and musical symbolic meaning of the Cairo melody, which is often used as a cliche to signify the Middle East, or more broadly, anything considered exotic. It is also known as the snake-charmers song or "There's a Place in France..."
The melody was used at the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition for an exhibition called "A Street in Cairo," where a dancer called Little Egypt danced the infamous kutchy-kutchy (or hutchy-kutchy). I have been informed that the lady depicted in the video is not the original Little Egypt but a later imitator, as there were many other dancers that used the name, capitalizing on the popularity of the original. Sol Bloom claims to have composed the melody, although there is some evidence that it may have originally come from a folk tune.
In 1895, James Thornton wrote "The Streets of Cairo or The Poor Little Country Maid," which uses the hutchy-kuthcy melody for the verses, with a chorus in the relative major key.
With the extreme difficulty I had finding a recording, I decided to make this one as a reference recording for others that might be interested in the song's history. I based it on two different piano/vocal arrangements of the tune (the only two I could find). I took the parts that I liked most from each arrangement and rearranged it and made some very minor edits that I felt made more musical sense (without altering the integrity of the arrangements, which at any rate, probably do not give an entirely accurate picture of how this was originally performed anyway). [UPDATE: I have located the original publication of the public domain 1895 sheet music at jscholarship.l... - unfortunately, this is not the version heard in this recording, but it is very similar. Lyrics and vocal melody are the same. I have also located the original recording of the song by Dan W. Quinn from 1895 - • "Streets of Cairo" - D...
A large number of popular songs have borrowed the hutchy-kutchy melody including Steve Martin's "King Tut" and "Istanbul not Constantinople" by Four Lads and They Might be Giants.
On July 27, 2013, my recording of "The Streets of Cairo or the Poor Little Country Maid" was played on the Dr. Demento Show.
Lyrics:
I will sing you a song, and it won't be very long
'Bout a maiden sweet, and she never would do wrong.
Ev'ryone said she was pretty. she was not long in the city.
All alone, oh, what a pity, poor little maid.
She never saw the streets of Cairo.
On the Midway she had never strayed;
She never saw the kutchy-kutchy,
Poor little country maid.
She went out one night, did this innocent divine,
With a nice young man who invited her to dine.
Now he's sorry that he met her, and he never will forget her,
In the future he'll know better, poor little maid.
She never saw the streets of Cairo.
On the Midway she had never strayed;
She never saw the kutchy-kutchy,
Poor little country maid.
She was engaged as a picture for to pose,
To appear each night in abbreviated clothes.
All the dudes were in a flurry, for to catch her they did hurry,
One who caught her now is sorry, poor little maid.
She was much fairer far than Trilby,
Lots of more men sorry will be,
If they don't try to keep away from
This poor little country maid.

It's absolutely unbelievable how much the music from this song is sampled, and it makes sense because it's super catchy.
The arabic riff is a very famous melody, especially in terms of melodies related to nationalities. It’s right up there with the “oriental” riff, which is found in songs like “kung fu fighting”.
True that, I just fell into an Ava Maxx loop. I remembered someone else made a similar song (turned out to be Ke$ha's "Take It Off"). Somehow people know it more from The Office.

I love this! I own a cabinet card of the photo of Little Egypt in this video. It dates from c 1890-1895. I paid $100 for it.
Wow, interesting!
The lyrics seem to be a cautionary tale about venereal disease.
I never thought of it that way before, but the line "One who caught her now is sorry," certainly seems to support that interpretation.
I think you guys went way too far, I'm pretty sure he really meant what he actually said. The one who got her was sorry because he would never forget her while she wouldn't ever actually be with him. I think that's why everyone was sorry, she was amazingly special which none could kept for his own.
You really think a song written in 1893 was about stds?
Seriously.
you think people in 1893 didn't have dirty minds?
Jessaca Kearton-Moore sure but they weren't as crass as we are today. A lot of songs would get totally rewritten before they'd be released to the general public

I can't thank you enough for sharing your effort and your research. I remember the "Arabian riff" from Laurel and Hardy's "Sons of the Desert", but I've heard it countless times on different occasions and I could never find out where it came from. My father was convinced it was Italian because he knew some Italian words to it. I don't remember what ultimately led me here, but I'm glad. Thanks!
Thank you! I learned it as “there’s a place in France where the alligators dance”, and also its “where the naked ladies dance”. How absolutely marvelous! Thank you!

I love it! Well done sir! Good singing, nice playing and lively tempo! I have been a constant fan of Dr. D since 1970. I met him when we lived in SoCal at one of his appearances (Six Flags Magic Mountain). I have not watched The Office much, but will probably do so, because I like all the actors in it. PS My friends and I all grew up singing this song occasionally, and tittering over it ... girls!! It was the not quite so clean version.
And since I've been to Cairo in 1974... I can advise everyone else to NOT go there unless on a tour. We were there as part of our honeymoon, and saw most everything, but some guys tried to pull me out of the row boat on the Nile... hubby bashed them with the oar, and managed to pull me back. There were also AK-47s on the street guarding . People urinating and such on the streets... it's a third world country!
Love your detailed history of the song as well, Mr. Stokes!
Man, thanks Walten Files for this. Never thought I would thank Walten Files.
There's a snake in your toilet, so you start singing. All of the sudden, eight rabbi's burst in and start singing as well. The snake starts dancing.

Don't get me wrong, I like this, but I'm confused. I remember this having something like "there's a place in France where the naked ladies dance/there's a hole in the wall where themes can see it all". Am. Thinking of something else entirely or is this just a different version or what?
awildabeast50 The version heard here is based on the original song. The tune has been parodied and used in schoolyard chants numerous times for more than a century!
***** Jesus I haven't heard that in like 30 years hahaha XD
its interesting. .. alot of songs have used this tune. kesha, ying yang twins used it on naggin, and place in france by zebrahead
That song is a parody based on the beat of this one. This songs beat has been repurposed into a number of schoolyard chants.

Oh, to have a dime for the number of times someone has lifted a part of this music to make his own! Having listened to this version and the original, I have to say I like this version better. The lyrics are easier to make out, there's less distortion overall, and nothing seems out-of-sync with the arrangement. It corrects every flaw while sacrificing no positive traits of the original. This is the way a good cover is supposed to work.
Which is the original song.?

Thanks a lot for the note! The book from which this picture comes claimed this was the Little Egypt, but I am not at all surprised that it is not. I was aware that others also used the name Little Egypt, and since my source was a sheet music collection and not a history book, I imagine they didn't do all of the research necessary to get a picture of the real Little Egypt. If you have a chance, perhaps you could let me know where you learned your info on Little Egypt. I'd like to check it out!

I imagine you've also seen the title 'Kradoutja', which is supposedly an Algerian or Arabic folk tune from the 1600s or 1700s. One blog says that William Benzon’s book 'Beethoven’s Anvil' goes into more detail about the history of the song. I haven't seen that, but hopefully you can borrow the book through a library. You also might be interested in researching the familiar songs 'The Villains Theme'/'Mysterioso Pizzicato' or the melody 'Oriental Riff' (aka the 'Aladdin Quick Step' from "The Grand Chinese Spectacle of Aladdin or The Wonderful Lamp" in 1847)
Thanks for the note. I will be sure to seek out this book. As far as "The Villains Theme" is concerned, is this the theme that goes A- C- E- A- F......EDCBA? I assumed this came from Vaudeville, but have never looked into it. I have looked into the "Oriental Riff," whose origin has proven very difficult to pin down.
Samuel Stokes Yes, that's the Villian's Theme. It was supposedly composed by J. Bodewalt Lampe and is found in 'The Remick Folio of Moving Picture Music, vol. I'. Sadly, it isn't available on Archive dot org. You also might want to find 'Book of World Famous Music' by James J. Fuld which supposedly gives mini-investigations of numerous well known melodies. (I haven't seen either title). Regarding the 'Oriental Riff', do a search for: "The Musical Cliché Figure Signifying The Far East: Whence, Wherefore, Whither?" chinoiserie.atspace.com/index.html
Ah, yes, I've seen that website. It has some very good information. It definitely saved me a lot of time!
