- As a loving cat owner, you certainly want what’s best for your feline friend. That's why you might find yourself wondering in the colder winter months, "How do I know if my cat is cold?"
When the temperature outside drops, you probably pull out your blankets and sweaters to stay warm. But have you thought about your kitty's comfort?
It is possible that while you are warm and toasty, your cat is dealing with a bit of a chill in the air.
Even indoor cats, shielded from harsh outdoor elements, may find the indoor conditions a tad too chilly for their liking. If you’re wondering how to tell if your cat is cold or not, we’re here to help! In this video, we'll talk about the signs that indicate your cat is cold, and what you can do to keep them warm.
Keep in mind that cats are more sensitive to temperature changes than us, especially if they are used to living only indoors. In particular, special care must be taken with breeds with little or no hair, cats with compromised immune system, young kittens, and senior cats.
What Temperature Do Cats Prefer?
Most people tend to be comfortable at room temperature, which is about 68 degrees Fahrenheit or 20 degrees Celsius, but what temperature do cats like for their comfort? Much higher.
As descendants of ancient desert animals, domestic cats are hard-wired to thrive in toasty climates. According to a study published in the Scientific World Journal, cats prefer temperatures of about 86 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 degrees Celsius.
Cats love warm and cozy spaces, but you don't have to keep your thermostat set to sauna-level just for them.
You can offer them heated beds, boxes, cozy beds with blankets, or even warm water bottles to ensure your cat has warm options in safe areas.
And now that we provided our foundation for this topic, let’s talk about 6 signs that indicate your cat is cold.
Seeking out warm spots around the house.
One of the main indicators a cat is cold is when we see them take refuge in the warmest area in the home. Are you noticing your cat is always lying in front of the fire, next to the radiator, or even in the sun’s rays? By positioning themself near heat, they’re attempting to boost their body temperature and feel more comfortable.
They always want to cuddle
If your cat is permanently fixed to your lap, it’s fair to say they’re trying to get warm.
When temperatures drop, cats seek body heat as a way to maintain their warmth. If your feline friend becomes unusually affectionate, curling up on your lap, or sleep against you more frequently, it's likely their way of absorbing heat.
In a household with multiple cats, you might observe them huddling together or sleeping in close proximity to share warmth.
Curling up in a ball
Another way to check if your cat is cold is to observe their body language. When a cat curls up in a ball with their feet tucked under their body, the animal can preserve body heat. While this position may be how you often find your cat sleeping, it could also be a sign that they’re cold. Likewise, if your furry friend tucks all her feet up underneath and curl up into a loaf position, it's a telltale sign that it is feeling cold. The loafing position is great for preserving body heat and energy.
Shivering.
Just as we start to shiver when we get too cold, so do our cats. Shivering is the body’s automatic response to the cold, a way of elevating its temperature by quickly tightening and relaxing muscles.
Cold to the Touch
Another way to check if a cat is cold is to check the temperature of their extremities especially the tips of their ears, the tip of their tail, and their paw pads. If these areas feel cold to the touch, they are probably uncomfortably chilly since these parts of the body lose heat first when the temperature drops.
Lethargy
Finally, cats also significantly decrease their activity levels when they are cold so it is likely you will see them resting even more than usual.
What happens if your cat is cold?
The primary risks associated with cats exposed to low temperatures include the development of a cold or even hypothermia. If you observe signs such as red or watery eyes, frequent sneezing, and a noticeable decrease in their activity levels, it could indicate that your cat has caught a cold.
In more severe cases, if a cat has been exposed to extremely low temperatures, there's a risk of them developing hypothermia.
How to tell if your cat is too hot
Cats can also be sensitive to high temperatures. if your home is too warm for your cat, they may exhibit signs of discomfort. Common indicators include seeking out shady areas and spending more time sleeping in them. They may also lie flat on a cool surface (such as floor tiles) to cool down. Cats may also excessively groom themselves when they are hot, as the saliva evaporating from their fur can have a cooling effect. And remember, a cat who drinks more water than usual may be too hot. - Животные

2. Wants to cuddle more often
3. Curling up in a ball
4. Shivering
5. Check the temperature of their extremities
6. Lethargy
7. IS THE CAT TOO HOT? Seeking out shady areas, lying flat, excessive grooming.
Re#6, my baby boy doesn't like his tail. nose, feet, or ears touched.
MY CATS SLEEP WITH ME WE KEEP EACH OTHER WARM WITH LOTS OF BLANKETS AND LOTS OF LOVE ❤❤
My Daisy seemed chilly to me, so I got her a comfy bed with a cover so she could burrow inside. I told her it was hers and not one of the dogs. She understood immediately. At night I put it by the floor register. That’s where she is now; curled up, comfy and warm.😊

My Nehemiah seeks out the warmest spots here. We are in the mountains of Idaho so we are in an extreme cold climate. I leave the thermostat in my bedroom at 70 and also run a space heater in the winter. In addition, he has a heated bed which activates when he gets into it. He loves his heated bed. I always give him options in this climate where he can find warmth.
My cat is called Naima. She is cold right now.
I made a warm, cozy spot for my fur baby girl near a window so she can watch the birds and squirrels. I have several spots ready for her to use . This particular spot is her fave. I'll be getting more heating pads for her.😊❤
thankfully our cat is a indoor cat,but we're about to enter a cold snap on sunday/monday so I thought I'd check out the video to be perpared,we don't get negative temperatures very often here, gotta keep our cat nice and toasty to
My old persian cat with sparse fur patches, suddenly started laying beside our heating vent when our winter temps dropped. She's an indoor only cat. I dug out her old tiny dog sweator and right away she stopped sleeping near the vent and became more content and moving about the house again as normal. She got used to the sweater right away and seems to know it helps.
Even though I'm in poverty I had to turn on the heating unit because my cats were cold. I was trying to cut back on the power bill but seeing them chilly wasn't an option for very long.
❤
Hi Gothgirl yes gas prices especially to warm up the house is costly. I bought an electric throw/blanket from Silentnight last week the best purchase for me and my moogy ever-the best thing is it costs 10p to run for 8hours.
My cat seeks me out when's he's cold. Either curls in my arms when I'm at my desk or curls up in my back during the day and at night he sleeps next too me curled up under the blankets.
I use pet heating pads and lambswool mats. Of course, they prefer piling on me and I usually have three of them piled on me at once.
My house is never room temperature except for in hot summers. I live in a very cold place where the average temperature is in the fifties. My cats actually look at me like “what have you done?” When it gets in the seventies or high sixties. Lately we’ve been lucky to get the house into the fifties and the cats are being even more cuddly. I’d say they are bathing in sunlight more but they do that a lot even when it’s not cold 🤷♀️ they have many boxes to curl up in as we have a box corner just for the cats. They are indoor cats and always give me a look if it ain’t the fifties or sixties.
This is close to the dumbest thing I've ever read. Congrats to the author...
I keep my house at 60° year round and have warm little nests for my kitty to snuggle up in. That way it is comfortable for both of us.
I’d freeze in your house. I keep mine at 71 in the winter.
Most people would. My internal temperature regulator hasn't worked right for the last few years, so I tend to be hot all the time. No matter what the temperature is.
@@rainbowmoodies13I was hot during menopause, but my internal thermostat has settled back down, although it hasn't completely returned to pre-menopause sanity.
No matter which phase you're in, I highly recommend down comforters. They are the best thing I've ever found to keep warm when it's very cold. I bought my first down comforter when I moved to Chicago. Prior to that I'd been raised in Texas from the 4th grade through my very early 20's. Down. Absolutely the best substance to keep you warm but not overheated.
I drape a fleece throw blanket from the top of the sofa to the seat as my cat’s blanket fort. She prefers to nap underneath it most of the day. It gets very toasty in there so she’s comfortable.
My cat loves my down sleeping bag that I use as a comforter. When he is missing I check the sleeping bag and 9 times out of ten he is curled up in there.
@@incog99skd11 lol that’s cute! My cat literally just popped her head under her fort and is now curled up for her morning nap!
I keep my house around 70. Outdoor temps right now are around 30 to 50, depending on the day. My cats beg me to open the window so they can lay on the sill even when it is 30 and the wind is blowing.
That's because 70 is too hot for the cat. Try wearing a sweater or coat inside the house - that is how warm the cat feels.
If you can try lowering the temperature a few degrees. It’s better for the environment.
I have 3 cats. At night they all have their special places to sleep. Ususlly on my bed next to me.
Snuggled up under the blankets with me.
Tucked in paws! Thank you. I honestly never knew.
My cat's current favourite place is a cardboard box that some shoes were delivered in that he found on the floor just under the hot-water radiator in my bedroom. It even has a slightly overhanging lid. He only just fits.
My cat Luca is a short hair so in winter he has his own fleecy blanket on my bed that I make sure to cover him with before we go to sleep. During the day he has a fleecy cat bed from takealot and another fleecy blanket to keep warm. I also ensure to give him extra food, he his my first cat so I hope I am doing ok😳
You're doing fine, listening to his signals with concern and respect. You might find he likes a saucer of plain (home made, no salt) chicken broth warmed to about baby bottle heat before bedtime. This is a treat that's also good for getting more fluids into him for good kidney health, since most cats could use more fluids than they actually take in daily.
She hops under the blankets.
Does on winter nights.
Does not on summer nights.
Pretty simple.
Heat is more of an issue actually. It gets very very hot here (mid 40's) and whilst I prefer the heat, the only time the AC goes on is when the cat is struggling with the heat.
Mid 40s is Hot for you ??? 5:36 seriously?? Damn ! What do you consider cold???!?
Very hot is 90s and 100s..like here in Texas....40s is quite chilly
@@tigger06obviously she is talking Celcius because in the 40's for Celcius is hot hot hot. 😊
I have two self heating mats for my Ace Of Spades.
You are spoiling your cat.
Good.😸
This is a heartwarming video to say the least. We can never take cats for granted. They need love just like little babies. 😺
Thank you for this info!
What a great video "Signs your cat is cold" thank you for making it. I really enjoyed it I was just talking to my boyfriend about the cats being too cold. We have 3 indoor cats and a pretty big outdoor colony. The indoor ones have it made we have space heaters and beds for them. But the outdoor ones have to get cold so we made houses for them. It is worrisome about them getting too cold but they always find a place to stay warm, cats are very resourceful. I do have a question though does giving them warm food help warm them up?
I am convinced it is an AI video. The "man" voice is horribly generic w/ forced fake melody like one expects from a robot.
Yes it does and they love it. Also make sure to check the water several times a day. Here in Pa, the water freezes in the bowls within a couple of hours.
My cats live in Phoenix and aren't cold very often. The last week has been on the cooler side, the mornings have been hovering around freezing. I have a heated mattress pad for them on the bed, they seem to enjoy that, also they have been huddling up against me more than usual. Have to comment on the preferred temperature part on what they say on video. I keep my house in the Summertime set t0 82 degrees, I noticed my cats enjoy getting up next to the air conditioning ducts in the Summertime, so maybe my cats prefer a lower temperature than 86 degrees. 😮
I live in Phoenix as well and I agree with you about the temperature at 86 being to warm for them to be comfortable I think it's more like 76 but I'm not a scientist. I do have three indoor cats and a lot of outdoor cats and it seems like they're most comfortable in the 70s
@@dianaperrone5088 I live in the tropics and notice the cats tend to prefer to lie on cool surfaces so maybe they don't like very warm temperatures.
my cat or i should say my youngest daughter's cat who has been here 12-13 years sleeps in the bathroom, i have a heater in there and couple yrs back i bought cat bed and cat mats that heats up when she lays on them plus tons of blankets for her to snuggle into...yeah when had the dog he had his own stuff as well to cuddle and snuggle into (his own blankets as well). lol the funny thing is that another one of her cat (passed years ago) would live out doors spring-fall but as soon as winter hit (indoor all season)
This isn't an across the board correct thing. I've had three cats in my lifetime that actually preferred cool even chilly places. I will note that each of these has been of the thick long hair variety like Persian, Himalayan, etc. My current cat actually loves to sit or lay outside when it's snowing ...often requiring me to make her come inside in regular intervals so she doesn't get too cold and not pay attention.
She never hangs out around heater vents when it's chilly, she does not like being covered up by anything ever lol. She sleeps with me but not often on me where she'd get warmth...she just likes sleeping near me on the bed lol.
I've had her checked just to be sure she wasn't dealing with an internal temperature control issue. Nope, perfectly normal and healthy I'm told....though I strongly contend the normal part lol. She's pretty goofy.
Ultimately while content like this is GENERALLY accurate it's important to remember that all cats are different. And not every cat has the same preferences. ALWAYS be observant and careful to note what your cat specifically responds to and enjoys. One might prefer sunbathing and near 90 degree heat....another might prefer cool dark spots to relax. One might prefer to cuddle with you under covers, another might prefer being unrestrained by covers.
Ultimately it's this process of observing and responding to your unique cats unique expectations that will help you live in unity with your feline
microwaveable gel packs with covers, very useful but don’t heat then up too much! little and often in better.
My girl has never been sick. Thank goodness.
There are great PSFS and beds that reflect the cat's heat back to it. Our cats love them.😻😻😻
Thanks for the insights
68 degrees, man that's cold, 72 degrees is a comfortable room temperature.
Yes indeed it's jawdropping but I always make sure that they are not cold
Heat vent that is my cat fave spot
Love it to you said that well
Thank you
Thank you so much
I’m shocked that people are that dumb to leave the cat outside in cold weather just irresponsible. Maybe we should leave you outside in that kind of weather
I agree
my 2 cats like it outside, hot or cold. when its snow outside they play around in the snow. not all cats are the same :) and when I say cold it is like -10 to -15 degrece outside
My cat sleeps under the covers every night. He is on my lap during the day.
Your cat starts throwing lit matches into a garbage can....
68° F is NOT comfortable in MY book! I like AT LEAST 70° !!!
ME TOO!!
My cats think 68 is super cold. Must huddle together on the cat heating pad...
I read that as "signs your cat is old" and was thinking who doesn't know how old their pet is???🤪

If you have a stray or rescue cat you or the vet can only guess the age.
😂😂😂😂😂❤
My cat was found in the woods. Vet estimated age
😂
Plenty of people like for example people who get their pets without knowing when they were born, from a shelter ect. A veterinarian can only make a guess as to their age by looking at their teeth. But if they have bad teeth this is not a good way to know their age

My cat Xena she’s been snuggling next to me the last three or four days because it’s been dipping down below zero Close to the teens so she’s been wanting to snuggle up next to mom so we’re both been staying warm and sharing body heat she usually sleeps a lot on the couch but the last three or four days she’s been right next to mom finally the temperature is out of the Below Zero in the mid-30s kinda nice still cold not as cold being below zero in the teens
My senior cat hangs out by the heating vent in my bathroom during the winter.
When televisions got warm I knew a cat that liked to lie on top of the warm television.

Lambeau has his own quilt & I 'tuck him in' when he goes to take his naps & goes to bed for the night.
I thought they had fur to protect them in these conditions
I just started laughing whether said the “loaf” position cuz I just call my cat a potato
My fur baby burrows under the bed clothes. He loves it under there.
My cat doesn't have this problem. If it gets cold, it just steals my blankets. 😅
My fur baby is a blanket baby. He likes to be covered up with his baby blanket when he is sleeping.

I have an outside cat that's a female brown tabby and the temperatures here at the beach in Myrtle beach SC don't usually get to cold but it's supposed to get down to 20° next weekend. She sleeps on the porch in a chair that has old blankets on it now all curled up and she doesn't like to be inside the house. I'm really worried about her come next weekend. She's been here for about 2 years or more and we are very close.
Be sure the blankets don't get wet from dew. You can use an old insulated cooler to put the pad in . That will help them conserve heat.
@@rhyta5042 the blanket definitely stays dry. I'm thinking about putting my personal heating pad out there for her to sleep on also
Well tbf with you i prefer hot i dislike room temperature its cold for me if its room temperature thats why i need 3 heaters on max even if it means im boiling my kitten comes to my room and sleeps in my room because its the hottest out of all rooms sometimes i feel like i over heat my kitten but when i touch his fur it cold but his body is really warm i hate winter and i hate the cold i love being warm
I have a 10 month old Ragdoll. My floors are pretty cold and she likes to go under the bed so I bought self-warming pads, but she still sits on the cold floor. I have a warm and fuzzy cat bed that she just refuses to get on. She’s always on the couch or on her scratching pad by the balcony door. She’s never cuddling. She’ll lie down next to me, but will not cuddle. This morning I felt her ears were cold and so was her nose. I cuddled her for a bit to warm her up, but she’s not a fan of that. ☹️
If you don't know fur is to protect them from the sun rather than keeping them warm, you should be watching more cat videos😹. I'm amazed at the amount of time my cat spends outside - its around 5 degees Centigrade here at the moment, he doesn't seem bothered...
Cat's fur isn't designed to keep them warm.

Allergies to cats are usually caused by cat dander. That's cat dandruff.
If you hunt around in pet supply stores, you can often find cat food and treats, usually pastes, that promote healthy skin and coat.
My house is dry, which gives me dry sinuses and my cat dry skin. Put them together and let the sneezing fits commence. But I give her a tasty medicated paste once a week and it's all fine.😸
@wendy ~ Maybe your group home parents or helpers take you once a week or so to help socialize cats and kittens at a local shelter! That would be nice for you and help the cats too! 💕

If your cat is cold, it will burrow under the bed covers. If your cat is an outdoor only cat, it’s not your cat. It’s a stray. If your cat is allowed both in and outdoors, it will come in when it wants to. Your cat has a fur coat for a reason. Don’t sweat it. Your cat will go to where it is comfortable.
You have a very cavalier attitude about cats comfort. I have a TNR cat who I provide a covered heated bed for in the winter, I don't think it's a good thing to leave them to the mercy of the elements. Our indoor cats have beds and pads in front of the heater vents. Treat your furry friends with respect.
@@rhyta5042 My vet consistently says that my cats are very healthy compared to many they see. They have a cat door that opens at 8 am and I close when they are in at around dusk. They both chose to go outside on hot days or in the rain or snow, where they play and hunt and live their best lives. Their mental health is far better for it. Widdershins sleeps tucked in my bed and Salem sleeps with my partner. The dog sleeps On her bed in the kitchen until Salem kisses her nose good morning. I feed them all warm thick specially prepared food to keep their coats and bodies on top condition. There is nothing cavalier in the care of my pets.
