Use the Korean Art of Joomchi to Felt Mulberry Papers and Create Durrable, Sculptural Organic Forms

This technique uses the particular qualities of mulberry paper to craft papers into a solid and durable fabric-like material. Hanji (Korean mulberry paper) is manipulated by hand, moulded and felted, rubbed and coaxed, causing the long fibres, typical of mulberry papers, to felt and adhere to each other. The paper becomes stronger the more it is worked.
The process creates strong, textural, textile-like papers that become elegantly smooth with use. The result can be six times stronger than ordinary Hanji papers, sewn into clothing, or used to make functional items such as wallets, containers and covers.
With scant information about this process, Louise follows advice to just give it a go. This exploration of the materials and process will be shared as a journey you can join. Hope you enjoy it and get to experience this technique and the fantastic handmade mulberry paper's unique qualities.

This is so labor intensive! The results are incredibly organic and beautiful. I particularly liked the vibrant colors at the end of the video. You are a genius. Thanks for sharing this amazing technique.
Glad you enjoyed it! And yes, it is a labour of love with lovely results though X. The papers you see at the end are still wet, so the colours are more intense. I used papers that were dyed with colour that bled when water was added, but I am sure you can even paint mulberry paper in a thin acrylic that would not be water soluble and so would keep its vibrancy. XXX😀
Goodness gracious Louise! What a huge amount of work and time this requires. You have an admirable commitment to exploring your process. It’s quite inspirational to see what you are creating. I love this paper but there’s no way my old arthritic hands would tolerate this process! But I adore the results.
Hi Ellie, thank you for the lovely comments. It is a bit of a commitment. However, I always think the journey is as good if not better than the destination. Sorry that your hands can't cope with this, but there are so many collage and paper-making techniques that do not strain your hands. Have you seen my Between the Lines Artists Journal? Gorgeous. I worry tho about my arthritic hands and trigger fingers if I dare try this. I can’t imagine 30 minutes, then 30 min, then repeat. And there’s the investment of the papers in various colors, the bamboo mats and more. But I love the results. Very nice series.

Louise terrific results . Am patiently waiting a delivery of mulberry paper . You certainly went for it with those big pieces of paper . Would you add paint to brighten the finished piece ? I intend to involve my Husband in some of that rolling .
Hi Sue. The results were not quite what I had in mind, but I am just beginning to get to grips with all the possibilities this technique offers. I always wait a week or so before judging as I forget my expectations and start to see the piece for what it actually is. I think the main consideration would be the colours that I use, as the dyes definitely run in the process. Or I would get white mulberry paper and apply colour with acrylics. When these dry, they are permanent and won't bleed.😀 The other issue would be how roughly I felted. I would use bubble wrap and wrap the whole lot around a sturdy tube to give some resistance to the rolling. Good luck with your papers, and look forward to seeing the results. X

Hi Louise, love the outcome, it is stunningly beautiful, you would have got a good workout from all that rolling. You are really inspiring me to get experimental with papers and I'd love to have a go at Joomchi. Does it only work with mulberry paper or can it be done with another type of paper? It's hard to get hold of mulberry paper in Australia and expensive. I thought the use of the blind was brilliant, you are very resourceful.
Hi Leigh. Thanks so much 😊 It only works with mulberry paper, but you can momigami and crumple other papers with fantastic results.
The long fibres, typical of mulberry papers, are what cause the papers to felt and adhere to each other. The other thing is when papers dissolve and their pulp breaks down, this can be recombined with other papers, but it isn't felting. Hope this helps.
And yes, the papers are handmade and are a little expensive. I suggest using smaller sheets to get used to the process.

Thank you, and so glad you like them; much appreciated. I will frame some of the Jomchied pieces as I like them as they are. I will use others to cover books and make pressies, eg. bookmarks, cover boxes, little journals and wallets. Hi Yolande. I use mulberry paper again; it's all mulberry paper in this video. It is the only paper with properties that allow it to be felted.😃🍀

The final piece is fantastic but I think I am too impatient and I don’t have strong hands. I suspect some glue would be utilized. 😊
Hi Sherry, it is hard work, and I would certainly use glue on the occasions that purism wasn't necessary X😀
I'm enjoying this series so much. Do you think that 45 gsm Hanji paper would be too thick to use for Joomchi?

Hello! I am a textile artist, I work with felt. You have a beautiful result, however I think it is too much effort. I would like to suggest you replace the bamboo mat with a woven plastic mesh. Look for a tightly woven mesh, you will see that it reduces the felting time and effort. Greetings!!!

Which type of glue you use?
Hi. In this process you don't use glue. The idea is for the papers to felt together. Mulberry paper is made with long filaments that can felt or bond between the layers when agitated. X
