Surprises me that this was ( and still is by many)considered such a shock.Peru were the current Copa America holders, the game was played in South America and they had been quarter finalists in 1970 and had a now prime Cubillas,it should have been obvious that this would be a tough match.

I Think partly because Scotland had so many great players winning Leagues and European Cups with Liverpool. (Their performance against the Netherlands later showed their talent). Also people didn't see much world football outside the world cup back then, so it was mostly just people making up assumptions about teams they'd not even seen play. Although South America was highly respected in football, it was a bit strange why Peru were THAT underestimated.

It's true that Vidella visited Peru's dressing-room with Henry Kissinger et al before the match, but didn't one of the Peruvian wingers (Oblitas?) hit the post in the first-half? Especially in the first round he played as well as in 1970. His general play in midfield was fabulous, beating men going forward, combining with his colleagues allied to his tremendous shooting made him the outstanding player of the World Cup for me. An inside forward of the old school, fetching and carrying, and able to finish as well.

Who takes a free kick with the outside of the right foot? That is classy by Cubillas.
