I not only provide lineups/goalscorers/etc, but I also try to add anecdotes, facts and trivia pertaining to the match in question.
A legendary Peru team . And a legendary player .
Cubillas ; not forgotten despite the passing of Time.
Best shirts too !! ( ps. I'm Scottish !! )
you're right!
Alan rough still hunting him
it's gotta be said, those last two goals were magnificent strikes.
Has to be my favourite game of the 1970's !
Not as good as the 0-0 at Wemberley in 1973 v Czechoslovakia.. Jan tomeschevski Scotland player of the year..
Cubillas was a rising star in 70....in 78 he was one of the very best in the world
He had the chance to meet his Idol Pele in 1970.
Never realised the Peru goals were THAT good
Outside of the right free-kick. Sublime!
That was, and still is, so sweet.
Love the David Coleman commentary at 1:56 as the second Peru goal gets thumped in, just a resigned "aaawh". Classic.
That free kick!!!
I was seven years old , is one of my first games i seen in my life on TV . I'm still with Peru about thirty seven years .
I was around 11, these were the first World Cup matches i saw. Being from England, I remember following the Scotland matches, and i remember those Cubillas goals. Scotland had a great side back then but always seemed to fall short. After Scotland were out, started following Holland, really enjoyed their team.
I was about 9 and this is one of my favourite games from any world cup
Mario Tsilimigakis bring me back tears of emotion. Perú played one of the best matches of its world cup history!!!
100%
Muchas gracias Sr Mario, saludos desde Lima.
0-1 Joe Jordan (14 min)
1-1 Cesar Cueto (43 min)
2-1 Teofilo Cubillas (71 min)
3-1 Teofilo Cubillas (77 min)
The saved penalty was so sweet. Everyone (including Coleman) gave Peru no chance. I loved it. Especially Ally Mac's face. Arrogance repaid.
Even better game last month than that...England 0 Hungary 4
As a child of 10 I really wanted a Peru shirt....
My all time favourite
Crystal palace had one very close but not close enough....
Surprises me that this was ( and still is by many)considered such a shock.Peru were the current Copa America holders, the game was played in South America and they had been quarter finalists in 1970 and had a now prime Cubillas,it should have been obvious that this would be a tough match.
I Think partly because Scotland had so many great players winning Leagues and European Cups with Liverpool. (Their performance against the Netherlands later showed their talent). Also people didn't see much world football outside the world cup back then, so it was mostly just people making up assumptions about teams they'd not even seen play. Although South America was highly respected in football, it was a bit strange why Peru were THAT underestimated.
I remember thinking a few days before this match, how Scotland and fans, underestimated how good Peru was and what a great team they had at the time with the great Cubillas. Some Scots already had penciled this match as a win.
And who could forget Rod Stewart and his rendition of "Que sera, sera". Cheers from Down Under.

Suka melihat skill alami pemain era 70an. Contohnya gol ketiga Peru. Tendangan bebas yg sangat indah. 👍
Poor Ally MacLeod (R.I.P.), did not do his homework. Cubillas played free of mark. It was a walk in the park for him.
Absolute legend for England supporters...Cubillias. :)
Peru had plenty of supporters in Wales as well after Joe Jordan cheated them at Anfield in that crucial qualifier.
@@charliemedson6534 Yeah and he DID cheat Wales out of World cup qualification that year.
Cubillas, Cueto, Velazquez, Oblitas, Muñante, Chumpitaz and Quiroga among others were at their best. Cracks!!!
Charlie Medson Wales always seemed to lose out to Scotland in dodgy circumstances in World Cup qualification. I seem to recall for 1986 they were unlucky too
@@charliemedson6534 Yes
That free kick, outside of the boot beautiful. The Scotch always go on about the arrogance of the English. The English have never been anywhere near as arrogant as the Scotch were during this world cup.
Well, that’s a lie. A whopper, in fact.
@@jintsfan Not arrogant I think but absurdly over confident certainly. It was a laugh seeing them collapse. The Iran game was the best...
@@thischannelhasnoname5780 Scotland could at least say they were there, unlike at least one other arrogant country that didn’t qualify, and the Netherlands game did show why they went there with a high level of confidence.
@@jintsfan Yes it was good that they qualified and provided us with such rich entertainment.
@@thischannelhasnoname5780
These were the days, huh ? Scotland in World Cup Finals and England not, instead reduced to watching it all on the TV.
Will never forget Coleman's "One nil!" as if a) He expected it b) It was meant to be and c) It was the start of a rout. How wrong can you be.
He *always* said 'One-nil!' that way.
That was Coleman's trademark. He was a great commentator, but his impartiality did seep through occasionally - it is noticeable in the '78 final when the Argentines scored the second goal that he wasn't too happy about it! "I don't believe it, it's gone in!".
thanks for posting this, i had a fiver on peru at 9/2 to win the match, i remember the ladbrokes advert in the paper that morning saying will peru kick scotland over the andes ? and they did, a great name for the scottish goalie ROUGH, cos he certainly lived up to it on many occasions ! cheers
Mighty Peru, Scotland were lucky to only lose by three, that powerhouse footballing nation of peru
Peru were the reigning South American champions at the time. they beat Colombia in the final after defeating Brazil in the semi-finals. Cubillas had been the player of the tournament. Clearly you didn't know any of that.
They replay that free kick goal in Peruvian tv time and time again. One of these days the keeper will save it!
It's Alan Rough
The second goal wasn't bad either
Hoy, 3 de junio de 2021, 43 años de esa obra de arte de Cubillas y su 3er gol.
Wasn't it great to watch Scotland being humbled like this?
Yes, we know that England's awful team didn't even qualify ; and no, we couldn't have found Peru on a map, but boy how we English teenagers cheered that day!!
Even better game last month than that...England 0 Hungary 4
@@profaneangel0842 Probably from behind your settee, you certainly weren’t cheering at Wembley games when you played Scotland.
You never turned out !
@@jintsfan well, we cheered at Wembley in '75 I seem to remember. But I'm always happy to admit that England, even today, are more often dire than great; and were especially awful in the 70's.
I suppose what particularly rankled in 1978 was being told for weeks on end that Scotland's victory in Argentina was a mere foregone conclusion: Scottish fans were in fact the first with all that "It's coming home!" nonsense. But somehow the mood changed after their first two terrible results, so much so that we were actually cheering FOR them in the Holland game
What part of Peru do you come from?
Good day. Thank you so much. Like from countryAzerbaijan
Apparently Scotland were going to win the World Cup in 1978.
England could not even get there.
Scottish Exceptionalism in full flow.
Even better game last month than that...England 0 Hungary 4
@@alwaysalert1543 We’re taking about Scotland. England has what, exactly, to do with that ?
@@jintsfan 0-4 lol.
Remember watching this on tv as a 11 years old. Scotland were so hyped for this particular World Cup Finals. Biggest surprise was they couldn't defeat Iran.
Before they left Scotland for the 78 world cup Thier confidence was high as a kite but unfortunately it was all.a dream.
The amount of space given to the Peruvian’s for the second goal was very poor defending.
Scotland stood watching the play before that goal and then made room to shoot,
❤🇵🇪❤️ siempre amare a esta gran selección
Fantastic player and good memories 👍
Am scottish myself back in 78 we had great individuals but couldn't defend when it mattered. Peru had great side all south American sides were back then still are now how we beat Holland but failed to win against Iran was also frustrating for scottish fans and players of course. I hope one day we can compete again at world cups and European championships to get out of group would be amazing. But every player that represents Scotland should have it drilled into them that winning is what matters cos I think we have been beaten before we start mindset which in my humble opinion needs to change in scottish sport not just football.
We beat Holland in that last group match with 10 players our 11th player was a passenger. The ref had more touches of the ball than Bruce Rioch.
I came here because scotland just got eliminated from the euros
@@slurpii4669 yes am Scottish and disappointed but this is where we are unfortunately we dont have good enough players with skills to compete at the highest level.
@@matthewhilton2979 sorry for that, but im sure they can get better, i always say this whenever a good player appears out nowhere and someone thinks their team will get, no, a single cant make a team good for the same reason its called a team, its a group of people, not one person, anyways, im sorry, hope you guys can make it the world cup,
@@slurpii4669 thanks my friend I hope so too
I haven't seen ANYONE, and I mean anyone score like Cubillas did on that free kick, with the external part of his foot over the defence into the top right angle of the goalkeeper.
Please tell me or correct me if you guys saw anybody do that besides Cubillas....
If was Cristiano Ronaldo score that or Messi.
All the millenials say "best free kick ever".
Cobillas. Another great player that FIFA dont care
Roberto Carlos for Brazil v France 2007 comes pretty close
Also, the second score was done with the same technique. Perú 🇵🇪 touched the heavens in that first round but fell down to the hell itself in the final part of the Tournament. Cubillas, Cueto, Oblitas, Velazquez, Muñante, Chumpitaz and Quiroga, what such players they were!!!
The penalty save was clearly illegal: retake. Even as an Englishman, I feel for the Scots here. But where they blew it was in the next match.
En movimiento o pelota parada, el Genio de Teófilo Cubillas
As a young boy i wrote down "Scotland's day of tears"!!
Cubilas was supposed to of been past it... 😂😂
I love you Peru , good performance , shame they fixed the match with Argentina but what a laugh seeing Scotland humiliated lol
It was not fixed.. the players were physically destroyed and the replacements were not that good as the main ones.
Even better game last month than that...England 0 Hungary 4
Peru looked so promising in the early phases of this tournament. Then came Brazil and that awful humiliation against Argentina to destroy the nation's confidence and consign it to football obscurity for years.
Peru were looking good and a threat to stop Argentina going through. It very much looks like they were paid to lose that match
@@De1966Laney I don't know where I stand on the 'conspiracy' question-mark that's hung over that 2nd phase game for so many years. Yes, there was shadowy skullduggery in abundance taking place during this Jacobean drama of a World Cup. It's true that Vidella visited Peru's dressing-room with Henry Kissinger et al before the match, but didn't one of the Peruvian wingers (Oblitas?) hit the post in the first-half? That shows they had intent to score/attack. Who knows what happened during the half-time team-talk? Peru's spirit and resistance crumbled, and the rest is world football history.
@@richardgere9365 Argentina needed to win by four in that match - and that's a big number in the context of an international match. The fact that they scored six definitely raises suspicion for me. How could a Peruvian side this good just collapse like that? And although Argentina were good in '78, they weren't THAT good.
@@richardgere9365 imagine if peru had won that match
You mean that fixed farce against Argentina ?
A disgrace to the game.
I was looking for England's games at the 78 World Cup. Couldn't find any. Just like 74. Funny that
How many have Scotland been at since?
Maybe , but what is even funnier is that scotland went to the '74 & '78 World cups and imploded both times ! Not really worth going was it :)
Peru looked a really good team, Scotland were woeful.
I am in the ACE crowd when it comes to all sports - I support Anyone But Scotland
Yeah, better to not go than make an arse of youselves.
England were beaten to the qualifying spot by two very strong teams in 74 and 78 - Poland were a useful side in 74 and Italy were semi finalists in 1978. Still it was a woeful decade for England and only useful for Scotland as a consolation for being utter shite themselves.
Scotland had a good team in 1978 and dominated most of the 1st half, but didn't do their homework.
In 2nd half, Cubillas punished them...
We (Scotland) were indeed good around this time, but for me the alarm bells were ringing in the early months of '78. We were very good in 1976-77, by early '78 the bubble had burst but we didn't realise it until this match.
@@SMSJSC Beat Bulgaria 2-1 at home in the February but by the Home Championship a lot of players had gone off the boil.
Cubillas brace was top draw
Love this ....
If only they hadn't(as usual) defined their success in terms of England then they would have been more moderate and would have achieved what they were capable of. But they never learn. A 0-0 against Eng...when Eng were shocking...was hailed as a new dawn. Result? Elimination. But still they mocked Eng.
Still makes me laugh.
Even better game last month than that...England 0 Hungary 4
Why did Don Masson take that penalty? Seriously was there nobody else more competent? They score that goal and the entire game/tournament takes a different path for Scotland.
even world class players miss penalties,it happens, just so happens it really was a vital kick,if ever a missed penalty changed a game this was it
John Robertson wasn’t even on the bench.
No same outcome
Surely we should be asking, was there nobody better than Rough to keep goal for Scotland? Of course there was - not as good as the English keepers but we had Bobby Clark, who was definitely better than Rough. Yet Rough got the nod every time - in my view, the most over-capped player Scotland's ever had.
But they didn't.
Paddington Bear would have annoyed the Brown Family - and probably Mr Curry too - when celebrating the Peru goals
Wouldn't they also be happy considering that they're an English family and not a Scottish one?
Alan Rough what a keeper 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Moral: Never rest upon your Laurels.
@Mauro Van der Kerkhof Oh fuck up, you ignorant twat. Go read a book.

But Rod Stewart told us they would win...
Well known Plastic Scot.
Rod Stewart said he had two career options, a footballer or being a rock-star. He had a trial with Brentford and failed. You know the rest...
1995 (June 8 ) Canada 3 - Scotland 1
Cubillas the best of the world.
Especially in the first round he played as well as in 1970. His general play in midfield was fabulous, beating men going forward, combining with his colleagues allied to his tremendous shooting made him the outstanding player of the World Cup for me. An inside forward of the old school, fetching and carrying, and able to finish as well.
Who takes a free kick with the outside of the right foot? That is classy by Cubillas.
Those pigeons of Peru certainly knew what they where doing
Pigeons??
