Surely you're not doubting the description of the PBS member rewards catalogue of the "traditional Bavarian Christmas pickle" Christmas tree ornament which no German has ever heard of???

Hasselhoff became a meme in Germany if anything. That's how I see it at least.

    • @Ulkomaalainen
      @Ulkomaalainen 7 лет назад +9

I'd say more like a "meme about Germany". We are aware of our love relationship with him, and sometimes play into it for fun, but it's more reactive than active, so we would play along if some foreigner brought it up, but not play the game within Germany.

I'm 20 years old and yes, I know him and "I've Been Looking For Freedom" but I think it's already kind of a part of everyone's common knowledge here in Germany to KNOW about him because all Americans and Britons think we love him haha

As an American myself, it’s one of those things that just gets blown out of proportion. It stood out at the time that David Hasselhoff was fairly successful at the time in music in Germany and people and especially comedians over here just never let go of how we label celebrities once we do. It was a way to stereotype his kind of celebrity. It just fascinated us that he ever had any bit of success in music in Germany. He first launched his music career in America back in 1985 and it was all but ignored here, but the story goes that his first album that he made in America had some success in Austria and that his music continued to sell fairly well in both Austria and even in Germany even before he did “Looking For Freedom.”

  • @JayJay2510

I guess I'm part of that german minority that adores him.
Being 25, Baywatch and Knight Rider were my jam when I was younger, probably due to my father watching them with me.
Obviously I know he's not a good singer and part of my obsession with his songs is certainly ironic, but somehow his songs throw me right back into my warm and fuzzy childhood. Rock on David.

  • @tuschman168

I remember an episode of "Kinderquatsch mit Michael" where a kid sang "I've Been Looking for Freedom". Only, being a German 5-year-old, he didn't speak a word of English and just sang the song the way he heard it, with hilarious and adorable results.
If I remember correctly the episode ended with Hasselhoff actually showing up and singing the song again. Just the icing on the cake.

One might want to add that Knight Rider was on TV when it transitioned from that "starved" era of only having 3 channels to the era of having hundreds of them. So it got more exposure in Germany than in other countries and was well known to anyone who knew how to switch on a TV. In other countries it was just one more TV series in a sea of thousands...

He is a good singer. He changed from a Action hero to a self ironic comedy artist. In the 80's and 90's he was a role model. Today unfortunetely he build up his former success to shine in it. HE just talk to the germans with phrases like: "Wie gehts, gut?" "Alles klar!" I'm sad to see this. He is in his 60's and pretend like his younger self. I loved him when I was a child. Today I am 38 and thankful for good things he does. He was a role model in a time I need.

The kind of people who have been listening to David Hasselhof are the same kind who have listened to Modern Talking, which by the way are very popular in todays Russia and nobody in Germany can fancy out why (maybe another myth).
But if there is a song that catched the mood of germany in 1990-91 much better, than i would forward "the Scorpions" with "wind of change", which still has an high approval rate in germany, and nobody has to be ashamed of.

EVERY GOOD country's people can absolutely ENJOY the song lyrically!

I always saw the popularity of Hasselhoff as a bit ironic. We know he´s silly, but he´s also somewhat charming and doesnt take himself serious, which basically turned him into a bit of an inside joke. A meme, if you will.
Another strange situation is with the band Modern Talking, who basically everyone agrees on is horrible, yet their music sold like crazy and everybody knows their songs; its just that no one admits it.

To make it even worse, Hasselhoffs "Looking for Freedom" is the cover version of a flop. The (successless and forgotten) original version of the (successless and forgotten) singer Marc Seaberg dates back to 1978. By the way: Both versions (and an additional one with german lyrics also published in 1978) were produced by Horst Nußbaum (a.k.a. "Jack White").

It is a given and true fact that Hasselhoff's song "I've Been Looking For Freedom" is not only the greatest piece of art that the Western civilization has ever created and gifted to the world, but also brought down the Berlin wall that divided Germany after WW2. That is not mere correlation but true dependency. If you deny this, you reject not only reality but also insult thousands of Germans who loved K.I.T.T.

There is one "museum", I guess in Berlin, about Hasselhoff.
The rest is, that his last name is german, which derived from a 1865 traveling of is grand-something-grandma to the US.
Secondly for singing at the wall, at the border between eastern and western Germany in 1989.
That was a sign back then and still is for those, who were alive back then, especially from east of Germany.

When I was a kid my mu would put posters if the Hoff on our walls (pretending we were the ones who wanted them and liked the music) er er... And that song came out at the end of the 80's and kinda coincided with the time of when the Berlin wall fell, so there was an additional hype to it and is still always linked with the events of '89. Some even claim hDavid brought the wall down with his song, but I think we can clearly say this is just a myth...

I really think Norm Macdonald has a lot to do with the myth. He built it up for years on SNL.

Hasselhoff can even be a verb!
At one of my previous workplaces here in Germany we had a little tradition.
If someone left their desk and forgot to lock their workplace computer, a colleague would change the absentee's pc wallpaper to a picture of David Hasselhoff.
    The more embarrassing the better.
    You got hasselhoffed!

Even here in Australia I need to defend Germans against the accusation that we like David Hasselhoff. Truth be told, Hasselhoff is more popular in Germany than he should be. I had a very negative view on Hasselhoff for a long time until I watched the "Jump into my car" video. This video is hilarious, it is proof that Hasselhoff regrets his career choices and is willing to make fun of himself.

I am almost 100% sure that somewhere a German historian has Vergangenheitsbewältigung-ed the shit out of this trauma in the collective German psyche.
