I remember as a kid, the Demon King Piccolo fight was so cool to me because it was the very first time Goku had a big fight that didn't involve just him or his friends, or a tournament. The stakes were the entire world instead. The Red Ribbon Army saga also involved the entire world, but the difference was that, except for the Tao fight, there was never a big epic battle for the sake of the whole world. And Goku was never at a disadvantage during the Red Ribbon Army saga, it was more or less a walk in the park for him, and never had to really push himself until the Tao fight (and the rematch of that one WAS a walk in the park for him). The Demon King Piccolo fight was Goku's very first Epic Battle to Save The World fight, and it set a pace for everything that came afterwards.
Yeah, that was also the first time characters did die too. It's true they could get the dragon balls to revive them but it was a race against Demon King Piccolo to stop him from using them too

Bulma had to come up with an innovative way to use her capsules in order to not allow the bodies of the dead to decompose, so they could have as most of that 1 year window as well. If I remember correctly, this is the part where Pekora stopped reading the manga. I wish more people would watch the original Dragonball. So many lore and story in the original connects quite well with the DBZ lore.
Well from what I could tell the reason why most people didn't read nor watch the original db anime or manga is because you know master roshi pervert scenes and the other stuff like Goku genital showing a few times and just generally because of the facts that people see it as boring compared to Dragon ball z/Gt/Super And what's funny is that Dragon ball has a lot of comedy tone and scenes because Toriyama is a gag mangaka he always does it for fun and such which is why I always treat it as such

Original Dragon Ball is better than 90% of what came after it. The characters were better, the writing was better, and the fights where a lot better too because everyone had different techniques and fighting styles.
