Gel removal options no longer only consist of wrapping fingers in acetone soaked cotton balls and foil foil.
Our industry is at a point where it recognizes that structured soft gel is the standard practice of doing quality gel nail services… At least if you’re opting to get your nails done with an independent nail tech. Independent nail techs are often highly trained in the latest and greatest in nail technology!
There are three ways I remove gel nails, and have been, since I decided to niche into structure soft gel only, back in the year 2016.
As a side note…
Remember, the baseline in identifying what kind of gel nail products you’re using is knowing whether your gel nail products are soft gel or hard gel.
If you’re new here. I use and teach soft gel nail product knowledge.
Soft gel is soak-able in acetone and suitable for those who want to enhance the look and feel of their own natural nails, whereas hard gel is more suitable for those who need extreme nail makeovers like nail reconstruction and extreme lengths and shapes.
These are the three ways I like to remove my structure soft gel:
Soak-off: There is only one time I will soak-off clients’ nails, and that is when they take their gel nails off completely for a rest. When clients want to take a break from gel nails, (whether that’s because they're having a baby, a new job, budget, etc.) I like to leave as much keratin on the nail as possible, and I will go ahead and soak-off completely, rather than remove and prep the nail with an efile, as if I were to re-apply the product.
Fill: I do a “fill” service only on nails that have been serviced within 14 days or less. Not a single day after. A fill is the service where I remove top gel, color and re-prep the nails, only to fill the bit of grow-out.
Rebalance: A rebalance service is the process where I reduce the product almost fully, completely flat, and restructure the nails as if they were a fresh set of nails. All clients, 15 days of wear and longer, receive a rebalancing service.
If you are still struggling to get to the stage where you are able to service your clients within a predictable and consistent time period, it is time to nail your step-by-step for application.
A repeatable process makes your applications last long across the board, and also allows you to move away from soaking off nails completely each time, thereby allowing you to get faster and also preserve the integrity of the nails.
If you want to see these techniques explained, when you’re ready hit play.

What do you consider “high speed”? In you videos can you please tell us the speed setting you are using
Hello Paola, I notice in this video that when you're using the efile, you're going from right-to-left and from left-to-right across the nail. Are you changing the direction of your efile when you do this? Is this extra fine ceramic bit a dual direction bit? Left-handed nail tech here and I can't find any left-handed fine ceramic bits literally anywhere.
If you’re a lefty work in “reverse” setting.
Say you’re DIYing…
The bit in this case would be turning AWAY from you, and you do the opposite of the bit rotation… since it’s rotating AWAY from you as a lefty in the REVERSE setting, than you would efile towards you.
When you switch to your right hand, bit is in FORWARD, rotating away from you, if sweeping side to side, file towards you.
Makes sense? Try it and let me know.
Paola, I need DIY help - thank you for your videos! When soaking off, how do you do both hands? Foil soak one hand at a time? Can you show a video of this?
I tried both hands and it was so comical - I could not keep the foils on tight 🤣
The trick is to put gloves 🧤 on after you wrap the fingers on one hand.
Like latex or nitrile gloves. That will hold the foils in place and speed up the removal/breakdown of the gel :)
Genius! I will try that next time. THANK YOU so very much.
I am not sure what product is on my real nail... acrylic overlay? I would like to transition to doing my own gel at home on just my real nail without the overlay. I usually go 2-3 weeks for a fill and color change. Can I use a Dremel to remove the gel and the overlay product? Thanks!
I keep over-filing my nail trying to get the mochi off 😅🙃I just need to be ok with having to soak off.
Yes, that easily soaks off.
I'm not skilled in the drill. Can I just soak them off everytime i do them?
Sure!
