      maybe not relevant to y'all anymore, but you can ignore meld for a good chunk of the initial campaign. You won't have the facilities available to use it until later anyhow- grab what you can get safely, and leave what you can't. A high-rank soldier with a full set of abilities is worth so much more than any upgrades Meld unlocks.

    I started playing this about 3 weeks ago and am absolutely loving it! There's so much to learn about and master.
    On my first game I didn't have a clue what to do and although the combat was going well, I didn't build enough satellites; built the wrong things at the wrong times and lost several countries from the council which had a knock-on effect. My second playthrough was much better.
    My tips for players:
    1) Prioritise building satellites and satellite uplinks. They are your income and one of the main ways of controlling panic levels of the council countries. Factor in the build times and time it so that you can launch by the end of the month.
    2) Don't worry about scientists and laboratories, your main focus should be workshops and engineers as they enable you to build things (including satellites; uplinks; armour; weapons etc). The only benefit of scientists is that you complete research quicker.
    3) Launch satellites a close to the end of the month. Countries only leave the council at the very end, so if you launch satellites late, you will have a better judge of what is most pressing. Even if a country goes onto 5 stars for panic on the 1st of a month, it won't leave until the end of the month.
    4) Keep a close eye on the date and keep checking your schedule of upcoming events, which includes the council report (end of the month).
    5) Use overwatch in combat - it basically grants you an extra shot when enemies come into range.
    6) On harder difficulties, wherever possible prioritise full-cover over half-cover - it makes a big difference. On lower difficulties you get away with half-cover, but harder modes are a lot less forgiving.
    7) Unless absolutely necessary, always refrain from dashing beyond the blue boundary when moving. You can move the same distance across two short moves anyway. This allow you to scout, and if you reveal large enemy forces, you will have an option of retreating; firing; overwatch etc.

    • @bleedingpepper
      @bleedingpepper 9 лет назад +17

      bleedingpepper
      A few more tips:
      8) The game's shot accuracy/probability system is fixed in a sense if you reload a save file and do exactly as you did previously, you will get the same outcome. What can change the shot outcome, is if you do things in a different order or swap targets between different soldiers.
      9) When the enemy approach and uncover you after your round of moves has ended, you will have a full round to respond before they get a chance to move. However if you approach and uncover them, you will only have until the end of that round before they get to move. It's best on harder difficulties that you lead with one soldier and never move further forward than the first soldier. That way you should (in theory) only trigger enemy groups using your first soldier, and have the rest of your squad's moves for that round to respond to the threat before the enemy gets a go (trust me, classic and impossible mode can be extremely unforgiving if your 5th or 6th soldier triggers an enemy event and you don't have enough moves to deal with the threat).
      10) Bearing in mind (9) above, Squad Sight (sniper perk) is very useful as you can position them out of range of the enemy group, and on the next round of moves move a non-sniper to trigger the enemy event, then switch to the snipers to hit them. In The Zone or Double Tap can allow snipers to get multiple kills.
      11) In relation to (10) above, think about how the rest of the squad can line up kills for snipers. Use explosives to destroy cover or soften the enemy up if the snipers have In The Zone as this relies on the targets being out of cover; and the shot resulting in a kill (I've killed 5-6 enemies in a single turn using a sniper's In The Zone perk). Using a heavy's Holo-Targeting can also enhance accuracy even if the heavy misses their shot. Bearing this in mind, a sniper with In The Zone should move last (to clear up wounded and exposed enemies while those with Double Tap can move earlier to damage enemies and allow lower ranked soldiers a chance to get kills and EXP (as In The Zone/Double Tap are Colonel skills, there is no EXP benefit for the sniper at this point).

    This guide is old, but in early 2021 I decided to finally start with X-Com. This guide was superb for beginners, since I don't want to know everything in a tutorial, just the core elements of the game. I'm gonna play this game in my native language first, I hope the voice acting isn't too much messed up, but I feel like for my first run it doesn't hurt to not be forced to google translate some sci fi related words.
    So now thx to this sweet guide I feel I'm ready to go, this is certainly a game I'll play multiple runs and in two languages. Hyped for old game in 2021

      Twice I have had the same issue with Mutons. No one can hit them. The first time I ever encountered them, they slaughtered my team. Two severely wounded soldiers made it out when I ran back to the extraction and aborted. The second time, after starting over, my team was much more powerful and I slaughtered the Mutons the first two times I encountered them with this new team. Then the third time I encountered them, none of my team could hit them. while they systematically destroyed the cover and killed my soldiers one by one. The only thing I can think is that "blood call" must reduce your will and aim to zero for next 5 turns or something. I'm about to start over a third time and see how that goes.

I desperate them far but only enough so that one team can assist the other if needed without havong to waste multiple turns.I usually keep my snipers in the back and my supports non the mid with my heavy and assault as my tanks. @bigbluebuttonman1137 2 года назад +1

    Old, but from reading the stuff here, and from watching the video.
    1. I need to take my time. From the other tactical games I played, I’m used to trying to maximize damage as quick as possible to minimize the chances of the enemy to hurt me. Doesn’t work here.
    2. Base management. I appear to have not prioritized very well. I figured this out when 2 months in I still didn’t have a third satellite and no real means to dissuade the panic because I’d just messed up and thrown away a pretty well developed squad.
    3. Research isn’t too important, but the engineers are. Which, judging by the importance of my armor, is probably true.
    4. Reactive shots. I should be using them much more.
    5. Really prioritize full cover.
    This should make my next run a little easier.

    1) Xcom is like Pokemon: Sure, you can rank up someone with poor aim (below 70~65), and poor will (below 50), but they will get your units killed, and they will take longer to rank up and be useful. The exception is the Heavy: with Shredder, Holo-targeting, Grenadier, and tactical rigging, grenade and rocket spam will save the world, and them from dismissal. Why do you think, after a fully upgraded squad, you're only allowed 6?
    2) Cover is better than no cover, but line of sight and distance is Key. Ranged attacks, including most psionic attacks, requires sight, and melee attackers need to close the distance, and while they often can go far in one turn, they will take two actions and forego attacking until the next turn, leaving them exposed.
    3) Overwatch only activates when an enemy moves in a units line of sight. If they stop moving after entering sight, or they don't move within sight, they won't trigger overwatch. This goes both ways.
    4) XCOM's RNG can cause perfect shots to go wild, there is no shame for using an entire turn to kill a single enemy.

      ***** I would recommend the Squad Sight perk over Snap Shot to be honest (although I would say it's useful to have one sniper with Snap Shot for indoor/urban maps). I use to choose Snap Shot, but Squad Sight coupled with In The Zone (which allows you to take unlimited consecutive shots as long as you kill enemies outside of cover - so until you run out of targets; need to reload or fail to land a kill-shot) and higher ground is incredible. It's an absolute life saver on harder difficulties as you can take out entire groups of uncovered enemies in a single go (you may need to soften them up a bit or use explosives to take out their cover first). On open maps you won't even have to move much with Squad Sight, and even on some urban maps you can easily blow away cover or holes in buildings to create clear firing lines.

      Xenonauts is probably my first and best recommendation. Shares a lot with the Xcom franchise and is all in all a fantastic experience.
      Keep an eye on Phoenix Point as well. It's still in development but it's being created by Julian Gollop the creator of the original Xcom. It's his personal take on a reboot of OG Xcom.
      Outside of that Into the Breach is more of a roguelike take on the turn based strategy but a lot of fun and recently Battletech launched on PC if you're looking for some hardcore deep Mech turn based strategy with an epic story and a lot of depth.
      Welcome to PC gaming dude! Have fun!

    i got the PC version and do you think the comfort of a controller outweighs the functionality of mouse and keyboard ?
    i would really rather play with a controller.
    Yes the video is a bit old but maybe you can still answer me on that one :)
    Cheers.

    • @ToneyMo
      @ToneyMo  9 лет назад

      +Syn Brainstorm Of course I can answer! I played both the console version and the pc version with a Xbox 360 controller and the game performs flawlessly. It is purely preference.
      I found neither to be more efficient than the other, but as you said the controller has the comfort advantage and I especially enjoyed that in a game like this.

    • @synbrainstorm6179
      @synbrainstorm6179 9 лет назад

      +Tony Mo Yeah for everything that isnt a FPS game i also prefer controller. But you know strategygames usually play better with M&K. Then again this game has also a console version so it just makes sense. Alright will use controller then :) Thanks!

    • @themaster408
      @themaster408 9 лет назад +1

      +Syn Brainstorm I played originally using mouse, then 360 controller on PC. I found controller easier in that mouse and clicking on some of those weird corners you may accidentally click just out of cover or around a corner that now makes him flanked instead of full cover

    • @synbrainstorm6179
      @synbrainstorm6179 9 лет назад

      +themaster408 Yeah after i switched to the controller and got used to it, it felt way more comfortable.

    Just started playing this today, got about 3 hours into the campaign and realized I'd totally screwed up. Had no money, no satellites, Japan and Australia were about to pull out, and barely any good soldiers. Whoops.

    • @4everdunc
      @4everdunc 10 лет назад

      I always loose 1-2 Countires early aswell, for no money, use the grey maket well and about the lack of soldiers, if your not to unlucky just slow down the game as much as you can, rather move 2spaces into a full cover than dash to half cover just because you want to kill the enemy

    • @bleedingpepper
      @bleedingpepper 9 лет назад +1

      Sam Vimes The same thing happened to me on my first go as well as I had not played anything from the XCOM franchise before. My combat was fine, but all my base management stuff was poor.
      Satellites are a massive priority to begin with. I'm on my classic mode playthrough now and am approaching the last mission and I've still got all 16 council countries. I don't know how much of this was down to luck, but it's definitely possible once you work out the mechanics of the game and what to prioritise.

    No mention of "hunker down" "overwatch" etc.. what do the alien red skulls when you move close to them mean? Are you kidding me? This is a orrible guide.

    • @rjhlee
      @rjhlee 9 лет назад +1

      Hunker down is a move that increases your chances of not getting hit. Generally favoured over overwatch when enemies have line of sight in you, since overwatch only activates upon movement but not them shooting you standing still.
      Overwatch is ability that causes you to shoot at enemies that move in your line of sight even if it is not your turn. Generally you want to be using this alot.

      the alien heads indicate how many aliens are in that soldier's line of sight, that should be obvious enough to figure out for yourself.
