Exactly what I was thinking. Says the battlefield tactics are easy but fails to win the game on his first run cause he doesnt have the brain to macro management the current state of the overall campaign. Funny and sad at the same time
@@alexndg5260 The reasons you may lose in XCOM is never outside of your control. These reviews are for people who do not understand video games, by people who think call of duty and Madden are relevant to anyone other than the most casual of gamers. Adam Rae I would like to... it isn't really their individual reviews or reviewers that bum me out; it's more what they've come to represent. The method of reviewing and looking at games used by these people seems to be thoughtless and based on a more popular appeal approach, rather than a legitimate objective review of the game. It seems to be a large part of the attitude of most gamers now, like those who say watch dogs is terrible, right off the bat on the first day. So it isn't really ign I'm pissed at. It's more a bitterness, I guess, at the direction gaming is taking as a whole. Perhaps I'm just old. I'm just railing against what I perceive as a threat to the only sanctuary I find in the world
The only good thing about this review is that he said in the end that COD "looked suspiciously like last year's" For an ign reviewer, that's a big breakthrough
Learning curve? Good! Love having a game that requires you to learn how to play it properly! Just bought this on the steam Autumn sale and can't wait to try it.
I believe I failed a math course in college because of CIV I, X-COM, and Wastelands. While the tactical aspect has been dumb downed and streamlined a bit - I do believe it is much better for it. I will agree, the one thing I was a bit shocked at was, on most encounters aliens wont move until you "discover" them. So, if you are low on ammo or need to regroup - you can do so - as long as you do not accidentally find aliens. However, Terror missions change that. Overall, this game demands a 9+
I see what the reviewer means about the learning curve, in the context of the review: he isn't complaining that it's difficult, but that it's obtuse enough that by the time you figure it out, your first play through is likely affected. Difficult games aren't a bad thing, but that doesn't means games can't outline your objectives and priorities earlier on. Either way, it's not like 8+ is a bad score. People have become so expectant of that "10/10" rating that they seem to have forgotten that this means perfect, not average. Difficulty aside, XCOM isn't perfect. The linearity of the levels is enough to kick it down a level for me, fun though it is.
My review is 9.6/10 great multiplayer and single player amazing destructible environments and fun gameplay with complex and engaging objectives tab tie into the story plus intense and memorable memories call me a fanboy but... I'm not I'm just in love

Major thumbs up, I didn't get that much into the game ever since I played commandos 2 I think. LOVE IT TY TY TY!!!!
I didn't see who did this review before watching. Then he says something negative about a great game, and I'm like... "Oh, its IGN. Makes sense." IGN is a joke and their reviews hold no merit. This game, and its series, are amazing. Sorry it's not an A-Listed FPS. There ARE other genres out there.
Heh, that's pretty much what happened to me. First time those chrysalids showed up, only 1 guy made it out alive. Up until then most missions went without a hitch, a few days injury at most. Then suddenly all focus had to switch to defensive armour and funds were pulled from construction and aircraft. It definately makes you work for your success and you do become attached to your best dudes.
An example from original XCOM. In 1994 version, ANY object on the map (except ground) was destructible, you could set fire to objects or areas, and it would spread given time. Aliens holed up in a barn? No problem, just hit it with incendiary rocket and wait till they all get fried or choke with the smoke and drop unconcious. Another thing- each shot from any weapon you fired, unless it went off the map, had to hit something, there was friendly fire, accidental hits on hidden but unlucky aliens.
Its pretty scary when a review tells you that its the kind of game where you could get 12 hours into it and discover that there is no way you can win. This seemed to be the only descent GWG title for June 2016....and now I think that I won't even get THIS.
Why wouldn't you get it? That's a beautiful part of this game. It doesn't hold your hand AT ALL. Like an actual warring campaign, you may go in strong and find that you have stretched yourself too thin and cannot win. How is that not beautiful? Are you not a strategy fan? I hope I didn't come off as rude in this post. I am genuinely curious as to your response.
+gozhven It's great that a game like this exists. Not willing to hold your hand. Just today, i had to start all over, and get a dificulty down, to easy. Actually, I never had played an Xcom Game before this one (I started yesterday, so please.), In about 35 missions, i had lost 50 soldiers, give or take. So yeah, definitely get this if you're into Strategy games!
one thing he said incorrect was the civilian actions, they do actually move around and attempt to find new, full cover further away from the aliens even though it is not obvious during the game, i have also noticed that they run away from my own soldiers at times, or maybe that's just me
Its really great to see an old school type game made today....So many mainstream games now hold your hand the whole way offering little to know challenge. Imo its the challenge that gives a game extra depth.Games are too easy nowadays even on medium this game will kick your ass.Which results in actually gaining skill in the game making your self a better player . There will come an encounter (unless I just suck and don't know it) where you suddenly realize that you are completely and totally unprepared for what's going on. So whenever you feel you're doing well, and might even be a bit ahead of the curve, save immediately. Because you're probably about to have your legs exploded or melted out from under you.
Matter of opinion, but for me the learning curve in XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a great plus. The last time I experienced such a great learning curve in a game was Dragon Age: Origins, which I restarted in the middle of my playthrough just because I realized how many mistakes I made individualizing the skills of my party. People may think a games complexity is scaring casual and less experienced players away. Those players are playing on low difficulties not even realizing how much greater the gameis
Its funny, because "Angry Joe" gave this game a 9/10 BECAUSE of the cut scenes. It adds to the overall cinematic effect that humanity is at risk of annihilation. I personally was also fond of these cut scenes because they add more to the story.
That's weird. It could be the specific model of video card. Perhaps there was a driver update you need or something. My computer was manufactured between '06 and '07 and doesn't have that issue. I do agree with the buggyness thing though. Landing with Archangel Armour sometimes clips below the ground and then there's the infinity alien activity glitch. Hopefully they patch that.
Steve Butts, I am happy to see IGN hired you. You bring more credibility to the reviews than all those other guys that jst praise everything. I was wondering where you went from The Escapist.
Yay! I'm downloading this at 3:41am and watching the review to get an idea of what to expect, never played one of these. Also have the free Second Assault pack for BF4 in queue :) oh and workshop contraptions for Fallout. So much to play and I have summer school. I'm sad now..
Two minor things: The Grey Market needs a "buy" feature because if you don't have the resources to obtain a story-mission required item, you hit a dead end; forcing you to reload a past game. Also, time should pass *all* the time --not just when deploying on a mission, or when monitoring the scanner. It passes so slowly anyway; and since healing, research and funding are all dependent on time, it's really a meta-game issue. Overall, ignoring the clipping and S.H.I.V. glitch, XCOM is a 8.5/10
For £3.33 (slightly under $5) for this month alone, right now they're offering this game, Battlefield 3, Payday: the Heist, Saint's Row 3, Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus, Uncharted 3, Little Big Planet Karting, Shadow of the Colossus, Rayman Origins, Ico, Catherine, Demon's Souls, Malicious and Sine Mora. You're right, it's not free. Enjoy Fable 3 or whatever Xbox Gold tossed out the other day!
its ok man. I know the pain. I watched a lets play of it. There was a man, named Will Wilson. He was the most badass man of all time with physic powers and could mind control people. He espcaped death time and time again. But on the last mission, when the temple ship was about to super nova and destroy earth, it was Will Wilson who daved the day, sacrificing himself so that earth could survive. Let us all remember Will Wilson, Snipy, and all those who were lost during the war for earth.
i've just started enemy within and i love it.... my first xcom game... but i can definitely relate to this guys views on the game's shortcomings. I am addicted to the game and every day i have to go to work and am unable to play it sucks. im always eager to get back home and jump in... the whole base management, and handling of politics like panic levels and such is a really cool feature. But i understand his qualms about the strategic streamlining and the familiarity of mission structures and such. This is a game u will have to take ur time and read through everything the base has to offer and pay close attention, don't just jump in and expect to excel. you will lose council support and lose resources that way. Excellent game design from the developers, but some tweaks could have made it better... but nothing is perfect... a couple hours in and so far this game is excellent
I actually thought that Enemy Unknown was a hybrid turn-based strategy and shooter game, like Valkyria Chronicles. It was a bit surprising to me to see that there were no shooter elements, but I love turn-based strategy so it's fine. Definitely not what I was thinking, though.
At the end, he said Firaxis was "taking chances with the license." The last good Xcom game was 20 years ago with the original X-Com, so taking a chance on making a good X-Com game like the original isn't much of a chance now is it?
Conversation open: First; nice joke on the whole 'education is your friend thing' i most enjoyed how you took mine and just added your own swing to it, twas very cute. Secondly glad to see you are using Wiki like we discussed, very proud of you. Thirdly it's still psychological due to the fact that a "drug" initially affects your brain (psychological) which in turn impairs your motor skills, yes just like having a physiological effect. I'm not sure if im getting through to you but hopefully...
There's just one "but"- it's not a complicated strategy. In fact, as a fanboy of the original, I feel like they desecrated one of my all-time favs with this remake. You should really play the original which is still pretty fun after almost 20 years, giving you more freedom during missions, depth in soldier stats and combat system that seems to be chess when remake is more like tic-tac-toe.
Learning curve is a minus? It's one of the best things about XCOM, the strict and unforgiving nature of the game requires you to think on your toes at all times. I haven't had a strategy game that actually required me to think so much on and off the battlefield in ages, I'm absolutely loving the game.
This review was sort of on par with reality Nice going IGN, you didn't totally suck this time around. It seems that tough the reviewer was sort of right in the strategic sense, I cant shake the feeling like he's not REALLY reviewing the game in front of him, alone. Almost as if he wants it to be something else and grading it one that. the game doesn't suffer much (If any0 for the reasons given.
The difficulty isn't even a negative attribute. The original game was HARD AS BALLS and this game is no different. It's part of the charm; you're still having a good time even though your beloved squad is getting torn apart.
Your complaints stood out more than how really good this game is. That's why I miss GameTrailers... without them, I have no choice but to put up with these hipster reviewers.
i think its something to do with it being harder to find resources like ammo and medkits. Also uping up the difficulity. Look at it like if you turned a game to hard and it changed more then just the damage you take.
Yup played both Witcher's and they are good. One of the few rpg's designed for PC with the depth to show it.Too many hold your hand type games now in mainstream. We need more of these old school type games to break the mold.
Just one thing... civilians don't move a lot but they don't just stand there waiting to get zapped... they stand there most of the time, but they will run away and even take decent cover if an "xray" moves in on them... at least it works like this in the PS3 version.
I wanna throw in my two cents here - Im only an hour or so into the game, but I think the learning curve is a bit of a plus. Sure - We have to learn how to play the game, that's a given. But the learning also involves learning to fight the Aliens which is a good thing, we don't know how to fight Aliens :P My personal rating for the game is probably an 8.5 or 9.0. Happy Hunting!
To be fair the "learning curve" or in this case more likely the complete disorientation at the beginning of the game can be extremely frustrating to people not used to playing xcom games or turn based rpgs in general.
Steve, the next time someone is harassed by a coworker and come to you bc you a the person in charge of that area, don't ever tell them "don't make it a big deal" just so you don't have to deal with the situation. It's called being a grown up, now act like one.

I didn't notice that until you pointed it out, and now I cannot stop hearing it
i've just started enemy within and i love it.... my first xcom game... but i can definitely relate to this guys views on the game's shortcomings.
+shadowmane55 I still find 1994 original far more interesting to play, even today.
*****
I see you never played original?!
I actually thought that Enemy Unknown was a hybrid turn-based strategy and shooter game, like Valkyria Chronicles. It was a bit surprising to me to see that there were no shooter elements, but I love turn-based strategy so it's fine. Definitely not what I was thinking, though.
i remember playing the original enemy unknown on my old 486 rig as a child and that game punished me. i expect no less from this game.
At the end, he said Firaxis was "taking chances with the license." The last good Xcom game was 20 years ago with the original X-Com, so taking a chance on making a good X-Com game like the original isn't much of a chance now is it?

First; nice joke on the whole 'education is your friend thing' i most enjoyed how you took mine and just added your own swing to it, twas very cute.
Is this game download only or disc
Learning curve is a minus? It's one of the best things about XCOM, the strict and unforgiving nature of the game requires you to think on your toes at all times. I haven't had a strategy game that actually required me to think so much on and off the battlefield in ages, I'm absolutely loving the game.
To be honest. Making a game more simple isn't always good. That's the charm of xcom. It's so hard.
I totally forgot about it, ugh, I wish I found out earlier, will only have a few hours to play tonight, but looks amazing.
This review was sort of on par with reality
Nice going IGN, you didn't totally suck this time around.
Yeah he's my go-to for reviews. Such depth and honesty. Make myself some food crack a soda and watch a review. Haha i like doing that.
i think its something to do with it being harder to find resources like ammo and medkits.
Agreed. I feel the same way about my German sniper, Ursula "Snake Eyes" Fletcher.
Good reference: Commandos 2.
Did you buy it? Wondering this myself.
A learning curve is a negative? Should be a positive! Maybe a warning at worst
Name your assault character Master Chief (Or Bigballs McGee). He won't die, and you'll never have to suffer that feeling again.
I like how he put Madden and CoD on blast. Unbecoming of your average IGN employee.
How the game in PS3 is like the PC? or different?
Didnt he just say that knowing you can wait around takes away some of the tension?
Just bought for £2.50 new from Tesco, no joke. Not played it yet but looks interesting, can't go wrong for less then £3.
To be fair the "learning curve" or in this case more likely the complete disorientation at the beginning of the game can be extremely frustrating to people not used to playing xcom games or turn based rpgs in general.
The difficulty brought this game down a point in my opinion. The characters you level up die and then you have to reload :[
I just wanted X-Com that runs on modern pc/mac hardware with the exact same features as before.
Even though I pre-ordered it off of steam will I get the stuff from preordering the game.
Steve, the next time someone is harassed by a coworker and come to you bc you a the person in charge of that area, don't ever tell them "don't make it a big deal" just so you don't have to deal with the situation. It's called being a grown up, now act like one.
