1. *Open-Angle Glaucoma:* This is the most common form. It happens gradually as the eye does not drain fluid as well as it should, which increases eye pressure and damages the optic nerve.
2. *Angle-Closure Glaucoma:* This type is less common and occurs when the iris is very close to the drainage angle in the eye, which can block the drainage angle completely. This can cause a sudden rise in eye pressure, which is an emergency situation.
3. *Normal-Tension Glaucoma:* In this form, the optic nerve is damaged even though the eye pressure is within the normal range. The cause of this type is not well understood but may involve a sensitive optic nerve or reduced blood flow to the nerve.
4. *Congenital Glaucoma:* This is a rare condition that occurs in babies and is often due to an abnormality in the drainage system of the eye.
Symptoms of glaucoma can vary depending on the type and stage of the disease. Open-angle glaucoma often has no symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred. Angle-closure glaucoma, however, can present with sudden symptoms like severe eye pain, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, and halos around lights.
Early detection through regular eye exams is crucial because glaucoma can often be managed or slowed with treatments such as medications, laser treatment, or surgery, preventing further vision loss.
