I don't know about embracing UBI but UBI will be something that would not be totally ignored. As for me, I am in more favour of Negative Income Tax which means if you fall under certain threshold you will get some money otherwise not, which I believe is much more sustainable than giving some money to everyone rather than to some of whom who would not need the money.
I remember some time ago that I saw some recruiter (HR) arguing online that entry level jobs should require some experience and that if you have no experience you should go for internships because you can't perform the job at entry. Then another one came in and said he does not consider internships work experience, so in a nutshell if you are young and want experience sucks to be you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (this was before this crisis even, now they'll probably be even more selective since there are more unemployed people looking for a job)
So many hoops have to be jumped through to even get the attention of the employer, both of my parents got the jobs they have now by walking into an office that had a hiring sign up and talking for a few minutes, shook hands and were hired. Much simpler, less competitive and less corporate times..

Mark Sebring well, that’s most people choices. As humans, we all want to go to college, want to start a family like other generations. This generation is highly getting robbed by old generations. Have to live frugally to afford a roof on our heads... doesn’t make any sense to me.
Mark Sebring plz talk about a generation as a whole not irresponsible individuals. Yes, responsibility is important but I don’t see millennial generation is an irresponsible generation.
Well this made me glad I kept my job even though at 38 I'm still not married and still can't afford a house. At least I'm working. You know, you CAN do everything RIGHT and still FAIL. I got a 4 year degree, entered the workforce, moved to another state to avoid high taxes I can't afford, paid off my student loans in full, and I'm still running behind what people consider to be "normal" adult life without a wife and a house. Simply put, I'm lucky and also unlucky at the same time. Some people are lucky enough to be married but haven't been able to afford a house or pay off their student loans. Some people have a house, but can't afford to go on vacation due to mortgage, bills, and student loan payments. It's just another combination of hardship, but still hardship all the same. This latest crisis with unemployment is just going to push people who are already on the edge over the edge and the results are not going to be pretty. Maybe instead of blaming people, we can find a way to look for solutions. That would be nice. Just my 2 cents. Have fun going back to belittling each other in the comments....
@@MrTmenzo CA house prices are absurd here in the Silicon Valley houses are like $900,000. Even having a job paying $84,000 - $95,000 is still considered low income or middle income. Not to mention they tax the sh** out of you. If you make $84,000 they take like $15,000 - $20,000 from you. Your lucky enough to save up for 4-5 years and take a mortgage to get a house or buy a house in Livermore or Tracy which are $200,000 but gotta drive a lot to work in the city. Not worth it. I've seen professors wake up at 4am just to drive to their 8am class at College.
@@MrTmenzo About $200,000 after having moved from state to state. I'm about 6 months to a year away to be able to afford a down payment big enough for a low enough mortgage payment, and the fed looking to keep interest rates down really helps too. I had basically started over in saving twice, once when I moved, and then when I payed off the student loans that were holding me back. I'll get there. I'll be late to the party, but I'll get there.
We were set up to be the lost generation. I can't imagine a thing called social security when we hit 60... If you haven't already, start saving 20% of each paycheck. Save it or invest it.
And the prior generations say we don't have it that bad...i.e ur gen x manager who let's you go and says don't worry it'll be over before you know it. Or the boomer parents and grandparents-just old people in general say that we don't know what hard work is while our taxes pay their social security and Medicare benefits. Meanwhile ~20% of us are strongly considering suicide, just for the constant fear, mounting debt and state of panic to stop The worst part is that I'm not even exaggerating...😔
Only disagreements I have are one has to aim for higher than 20% (shooting for 40% after my car is paid off) and it is mandatory to invest. This situation has made passive income way higher on my list of priorities going forward.

@@ragephil5609 its actually around 68% right now... you really think we have accurate numbers on "illegal" workers and able bodied adults who either lost their jobs or lost their opportunities to find jobs because the amount of labor available in the market suddenly surged and people who normally wouldnt accept certain jobs ended up doing so because of the pandemic. if you dont make enough money to stay alive you are not employed. you are considered less than human at that point and all of your rights lose their power because you cant buy lawyers, laws and politicians to give you unfair advantages and lots of unnecessary free money to hoard...

How were u forced to take a job as a server? And y not request a internship at a company you want to work for while u was a server so that you can get into the field?

This! When my dad was my age (20), he could literally just walk into a store, ask if they're employing and get an interview either on the spot or the next day and he'd have a job by the end of the week. When I lost my job at a restaurant, I went 5 months without a single drop of income, my savings got at least cut in half which was heartbreaking but you gotta do what you gotta do. Luckily I still live with my parents, otherwise it would have been over for me. I lost track of how many jobs I've applied to, I've probably sent hundreds of email but got a call back maybe 10 times. I even tried applying in person but got the response you ? mentioned :/ luckily my dad's boss got me a job but that's the only way people can find jobs nowadays
Thats all well and good until the jobs are scarce. The economy's "safety nets" are built with the understanding that everything is largely going well...but the second economic calamity is too great, a bunch of systems get overwhelmed at the same time.
@@balthorpayne But the jobs are not scarce right now. True, they may not be the same jobs as before, but they pay more per week than standard unemployment does. Of course, if I had been getting the extra 600 a week, I would probably have wanted to just stay on unemployment as well.
@@skeletorlongbottom I'm going to answer this as thoughtfully as possible: She was a flight attendant and appears to be fairly young. The airline industry was hammered. How likely is it she can find another job in the same industry paying the same or better? I am in IT making very good money, and just because "there are jobs" does not mean the next one will pay me the same, afford me the same learning opportunities, or flexibility that I have now. Besides, blanketly saying jobs are not scarce can easily mean her going from a hypothetical Full-time with Benefits $19 an hour job to a "flexibly scheduled" $12 an hour retail job, where she will now make less than unemployment, and not be able to afford where she lives. A lot of people stuck to unemployment because the alternative are hour cuts which leaves them worse off. Besides that, with all the talk of a V-shaped recovery, why wouldn't it be possible they could sit on unemployment and wait out until their job comes back or a better one comes around? She did not choose to start a pandemic.
@@balthorpayne She is also apparently not choosing to look into other areas of employment. I lost my job in 2008, and after nearly a year on unemployment waiting for my job to come back (it never did, and there was no recovery) I took a job in a slightly different field, have been there 10 + years, and are making more money here than I would have ever made in my previous career. Unemployment is a means to an end: getting another job.
@@skeletorlongbottom So you waited a year for it to come back. She is not alone in her logic of waiting it out. Also there is nothing to suggest she never at least looked at potentially getting another job, just she likely had the usual roadblock: outside of her industry (no experience) or way less pay.

Young people need to seriously reconsider higher education these days. STEM, medicine or trades are likely to land good, essential jobs that can pay off your student debts. Other degrees..good luck!
Do people who make horrible choices really deserve good luck? I'd guess that they would waste it. Redistribute that luck to people who can do something good with it.

Let's talk about the elephant in the room. The reason that we got lukewarm and incompetent responses in this crisis is because of the people in office. We vote them in, and they make the policies that impact our lives through good times and bad. Now, in this election year, we need to focus on both local and congressional races. Vote out the people who failed us!! Let's vote in people who the policies we want and need: robust services, universal healthcare, student debt reform, affordable housing. Look at other countries; their governments invested back into their people, financially backed them to stay home, and their instances of the virus is lower than ours. We have to wake up and vote for our best interests, regardless of political affiliation. I pray that as Gen Y and Gen Z begin to be formidable voting blocks, that we can advocate for changes to make our lives and our children's lives better.
The policies you want to vote in are the reason your generation is amounting to zilch. Communism has not worked for anyone and the countries you speak of, I bet you did not visit any one of Them but I’ll give you a hint, in many of them the young unemployment rate is well into the 30% range.
I seen many of my friends travel places and buy cars with this unemployment. There needs to be a way to make sure it goes to people who actually need it and not let people think they can just be rich for free. Also, if you want ubi, start buying real estate stocks, they're cheap and great with dividends
I literally had to escape a toxic home situation that required me to move out of state, in the middle of the summer while working at McDonald's. If it wasn't for unemployment I wouldn't be able to have gotten out of my situation.
My story is pretty simple. I was born in 1975. I was raised with a work ethic and the belief that anything is possible in America. I started working at 10. Worked about 40 hrs a week all through high school. Graduated with a 3.8 gpa and 27 ACT. Was in line for a scholarship to Michigan State. Opted instead for two years of junior college to save additional money. Decided after 2 years to decline the scholarship and join the trades. Advanced quickly as a pipe fitter and made 6 figures within 4 years. Worked for other companies for 10 years total. Started my own company at the age of 30. Been self employed for 15 years now. None of this was random or accidental. All of this required discipline and hard work. All of this is still repeatable today. Moral of the story is don't spend all your time and effort and focus on making excuses for why things are impossible rather than doing the work of creating your own success. Additionally, not all efforts are rewarded equally. Make sure you are engaged in something that the world actually views as valuable and has a need for. Lastly, you only get one life, live it like you mean it!!!!
"All of this is still repeatable today" Flat out not correct, and this is coming from someone successful. I don't get why you midwits have to rationalize your own good fortune by acting like you didn't get even a little bit lucky in life. I sure did, and I'm not afraid to admit it. You got lucky by being born in a time before mass immigration and inflation destroyed wage growth and hyperinflated the housing market. I got lucky by being born with a good brain and having a parent who forced me to get a degree in something actually useful. That's all it was for both of us: good fortune that was capitalized upon. Stop acting like you flew to the moon just by pulling on your bootstraps. There was a rocket underneath both of us.
@@lastplacerebel7774 That's not even an argument at this point, you might as well complain about how the redcoats burned your house down for how long ago that was and how different the markets were back then. The Irish and Italians weren't taking otherwise high paying and technical jobs for below-subsistence wages then digitally wiring the money back to their families to buy foreign investment properties with while being essentially sponsored by half of washington to come in with no visas. Guess what's happening today? Oh, yeah, right.
@@datanon3059 There are TONS if jobs in the trades that pay over 100k and no one lining up for them because they are too good to do manual labor. So yes, it is repeatable. I also started my statement with I was raised with a good worth ethic and the belief that anything is acheivanle in America. I acknowledged that right off the bat. And that is what it takes - a work ethic. I didn't care if I cleaned toilets, it flipped burgers, or pressure washed trucks, or cut grass. (Because I actually did all those things among others as well) I did what paid the best at the time and took a better opportunity whenever it came along.
This was a wake up call for me when things started shutting down. I enrolled in school to get a stable, secure job that will be here no matter what. We can't depend on the system for anything. There are so many places hiring rn in my area, I got a new job that pays more for less work so I can go to school full-time. There are opportunities out there, if you are young and healthy, get two jobs and work 50-60 hours weeks. Believe it or not, this is normal for a lot of people. The harsh reality of this situation is: you might have to move to a smaller place with family or roommates. Or move somewhere outside of locked down California. You might have to sell your stuff. Or get married. A lot of the people in this video had very unstable jobs that weren't really essential. I wish everyone luck! ❤️
It’s just our government isn’t capable of handling a pandemic like this. My friends are expats in Canada and France and they are handling the situation much better in ameeica
America has a lot of people and a lot of little governments to get on board with things. California probably should open up ASAP. Arizona is open and everywhere is hiring. I would leave Cali honestly, if it's so bad there, it's probably a good idea to leave in case this happens again
"Just work 50-60 hours a week for peanuts in order to have half the quality of life that your parents did!" Wow what I great deal that I totally am not contemplating military action against corporate interests and all non-protectionist politicians over.
Idk Dat Anon.. I think there is a lot of opportunity out there. I just got a job delivering cookies for 20 an hour, or 18 an hour in store. I knew there was a better job out there. I use to manage 2 stores for 17.10 an hour salaried and it was so stressful. There are great jobs out there, I think we can all find something. I said if you are young and healthy, working hard and long hours is manageable and you can make a lot of money that way. We can only look to the past for so long. The world is changing and we need to adapt and search for the gems that are still out there. Dat anon, use that energy towards bettering your life. We don't need military action, we can make change in other ways. I don't think we have half the quality of life the generation before had. We all are laying around commenting on a youtube channel. We have luxuries they didn't have. I personally haven't been bored in years. I think we should appreciate what we have.
I went back to school to become a Nurse because there were no jobs as a Finance major, everything was a call center job (in other words, customer service representative).
As a millennial, it honestly feels like our group has been impacted the worst for the past 10+ years. There have been times where I wish I was dead. I never thought I'd be struggling at 34 years old. I thought I would have a husband and at least one child by now and some type of career. All I have is bad health, depression, and my mother. I just simply have nothing else in me.
That's why they say do what you love, at least the you'll have something, even if you're not rich. And if what you love can be useful then start a self employed business. My dad loved to fix cars, so he always had a job. My mom was always about money so she worked in a place where she would always have a job, a hospital. In this time, really think about where you want to go next, you could end up changing your life
Just wait for Biden. It's just getting started. A 2nd shutdown is coming. What will you do then? Biden was the worst choice and now you get to see why.
I find it funny how the boomers here want to say we are broke because we have smart phones. You even need a smartphone to clock your hours at minimum wage jobs. Sorry but having a smartphone is not the pitfall of every millennials bank account. That’s just not logical.
And the US government should have had a plan. They didn’t. Look at how the UK did it - unemployment just hit 4% for them. Their plan bought ppl a lot of time compared to here, and spread out that unemployment burden. Here the politicians sat on their hands because political differences. It’s insanse
Mark Sebring dude neither of those has anything to do with the fact the government had no economic fallout plan. But fine then compare the UK to California. Economic output is closer than whole US, per capita is closer. Also, the UK isn’t in the EU... not every EU country had a plan either...
Those extra $600 on top of regular unemployment for week has not been the lifeline for many Americans, it has been the excuse to not want to go back to work and to buy things they couldn't afford when they actually worked.
Only had one job since graduating in 2015. That went from 2015 to 2018. Haven't found a qualifying job for my degree since. I had to work with my family just to stay afloat.. it's been extremely degrading.
I must be one of the lucky ones. Been working throughout the pandemic, got hit by a car, was out for 2 months and still came back to the same job. Crazy enough, people still belittle folks who work at supermarkets. Even now. Even though my job is unionized.
What most people fail to understand is that we were at the peak of our economic boom. Americans have been over consuming on a debt-based monetary system for decades, and now it is time to pay the piper. Sending out stimulus checks / unemployment is a band aid and will not fix the problem. Our country has to undergo a serious deflation in order for us to have a proper recovery. This means less consuming, less available credit, and living below your means. Gone are the days of financing a car you can't afford, buying a house that you do not need, over-priced education etc. If you are smart you will leave the massive cities and move to an area with affordable housing. These last 6 months are only the beginning folks, and the best thing you can do right now is educate yourself and be prepared. Good luck!
Think about it, if you make 8/HR and are expected to rent--key word: RENT-- 600 to 700 a month, you'd barely make enough to cover that. However, if you are un UEB you'll make almost twice as much just looking for a job. Which one would you choose?
Do you think the current unemployment crisis will lead politicians to embrace universal basic income?
It's doable. Account starts at birth and check issues at 18 years so parents don't bank on it to have more babies.
Hmm....free money for the participation trophy people....what could go wrong?
Politicians can't even get together to get unemployment together now, no way they will be able to pull together something long term.
@Zeek Banistor and we are failing american how????
Yeah those "entry level jobs" that require 5 years of experience
I remember some time ago that I saw some recruiter (HR) arguing online that entry level jobs should require some experience and that if you have no experience you should go for internships because you can't perform the job at entry. Then another one came in and said he does not consider internships work experience, so in a nutshell if you are young and want experience sucks to be you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (this was before this crisis even, now they'll probably be even more selective since there are more unemployed people looking for a job)
I especially love the tech jobs that call for more years of experience than the particular technology has been in existence.
So many hoops have to be jumped through to even get the attention of the employer, both of my parents got the jobs they have now by walking into an office that had a hiring sign up and talking for a few minutes, shook hands and were hired. Much simpler, less competitive and less corporate times..

@Mark Sebring Can you tell us how many other developed countries give there citizens free college?

Not everyone lives near an amazon warehouse, or have a car to get to one.

As a college graduate who was pretty much forced to take a job as a server and who’s been stuck doing that for 7 years despite having been out of school with a degree since 2012. Gotta love how I spent 4 years in college, just for every job I’ve applied for in my field telling me “you need more experience”, so did college just take my money?
How were u forced to take a job as a server? And y not request a internship at a company you want to work for while u was a server so that you can get into the field?
You could've offered the employers 'free work' just to get your feet on the field.
@@taneshabland8686 Internships are often volunteer only. Companies like to have interns but not pay for them. My former company (I'm now retired) didn't pay its interns.
@@hollybardoe4075 ummm I know that’s my point. Take a internship position to get experience and work as a server to get money once u hv enough experience u can start working in the field. And a lot of times the internship position will offer u full time employment if ur a good worker
Iz a scam. What degree did you get?
They want everyone to apply online now. Even if you try and meet in person, they say to apply online. If don't know people, good luck finding work.
"I would probably make more money if I just got a job." Yeah, that's supposed to be how it works. Unemployment was never meant to be a career choice.
I'm very grateful to be working a freelance job and for the census for the past two months. But I still haven't received my $1,200 nor got any offers from 10 of the places I applied to when my work ends this month.
Living here in Central Mass is tough, especially after i just graduated college. Wishing all my friends out there luck.
OrdinaryHuman why not? Luck is not a finite resource. Everyone (incl. smart people) needs a bit of luck to succeed in life.
humanityexists i never said STEM would guarantee anything in life. I said “likely”. In my field (pharmaceuticals) Biology degree is highly sought after. I heard too that Investment banking recruit plenty of Physics graduates.
@@timedone8502 Yeah, luck isn't really a resource at all, or something to distribute. But if it were, throwing it at losers would probably be a waste, right?
OrdinaryHuman well yes. I still hope people receive it and succeed in life though.
Most resumes will now be like "I have 6 months of experience in QUARANTINE" lol
You certainly do. "Millennial" seems to be used as a catchall phrase these days for 'young folk.'
That extra $600 in unemployment went directly to rent and my other bills. I did indeed make more than when I was working as a full-time barista. Now I'm dipping into my "life savings" to pay for things and all I was able to find is one part-time retail job. I'm hoping we continue to get stimulus checks because at this rate, I'm going to be homeless...
Become a certified nursing assistant. You won't be out of a job....trust me. I'm also a dental assistant and my dental office had to shut down for two months in March 2020....Thank you COVID. Fortunately I had my cna job to fall back on.
I'm currently an insurance agent and I plan on going back to school for my BSN. Im scared out of my mind since I haven't been to school since I graduated high school (I'm 29) but I gotta take that leap.
Even after studying well in college and universities and graduating, I wanted to make a career shift but families where I belong won't understand or accept that at all... it's too late now. I am done.
The average age in America is 37 years old yet we have these 60-70 years old men running the country. They need to lower the age .
Other countries are crap too. Everyone went on the globalist bandwagon. Only ones that won is China and globalists.
TheBooban you mean The countries that are still paying their citizens to stay home? USA literally ran out of masks earlier in the pandemic.
The policies you want to vote in are the reason your generation is amounting to zilch. Communism has not worked for anyone and the countries you speak of, I bet you did not visit any one of Them but I’ll give you a hint, in many of them the young unemployment rate is well into the 30% range.
Governments are inefficient no matter who you vote in.
Yes you could have. Us army and other things
"All of this is still repeatable today"
Flat out not correct, and this is coming from someone successful.
I bet this guy also believes Covid was a Bioweapon.
@@spirorevelis7100 I like this way of thinking, I think pride and career is what's affecting alot of people

I work in construction and I’ve never stopped working. Go figure.
"Just work 50-60 hours a week for peanuts in order to have half the quality of life that your parents did!"
Wow what I great deal that I totally am not contemplating military action against corporate interests and all non-protectionist politicians over.
Dat Anon Exactly. This is CNBC so many of the commenters are right wing apologists for corporate and white color misconduct. Very anti worker etc

I find it funny how the boomers here want to say we are broke because we have smart phones. Ok Fred, can you explain to me how I’m supposed to let alone find, and much less keep a job without a smartphone these days? It’s kind of necessary for any job. COVID didn't shut down the economy, governments did. Many shops are willing to hire, but government made it illegal for these people to provide a job.

And unfortunately the worse is yet to come..
True since CDC stopped evictions for the rest of 2020
Only had one job since graduating in 2015.

Even now. Even though my job is unionized.
with all these stimulus relief bills pretty soon the dollar wont have any value and people will be throwing it in the streets.
