Grain harvesting equipment sure has come a long way since the last time I was involved in farming. That’s all I knew for the first half of my life. I still miss farming.
Same, I just posted elsewhere that I grew up in Saskatchewan, Canada on a Cockshutt 5542 self propelled combine. I was king of the world watching my Dad run it, me driving grain truck (that held 180 bushels!) - I think about it all the time.....the days when you knew you had a bad bearing as you felt and heard it.
The Claas Xerion 5000 might be my favorite non articulated tractor. Especially with 750 duals it just looks so tough. Thanks for posting this one Jason.

I have noticed in your and other guy's videos that there are draper heads with conveyor belts others with augers. Are there advantages of one system over another or is it just two different ways of doing the same thing ?
The Draper head is 100% better than an auger head. Even feeding, faster speeds and a wider cut are possible with a Draper. An auger head tends to wad the crop up.
@@bigtractorpower thank you. I do t understand why the combines keep folding their augers up in the middle of the field. Once we got away from the tree line we left ours out. Maybe it’s because they are so heavy.
@@dmc3742 a big operation like this have grain bins to each combine that are on spot ready for the tipper to unfold so they shouldnt need no more indication then that really! Also CB Radios also flashing beacons will indicate when Harvesters 80% full in some places!
When we used to farm and custom harvest it was a rule for operators to fold in the auger because you are paying attention to the header and with the auger out power poles and trees and the other machines in the field have a nasty way of sneaking up on you, and you dont want a machine down for days due to a smashed auger and also before good radios and auto controls it was easy for the grain cart operator to know who needed to unload.
In anyone's opinion is the Shelbourne stripper head any more efficient than the regular draper head? Does one do a better job of collecting the grain and having less loss? It appears the Shelbourne runs less stalk through the combine making it more efficient but I'm pretty out of date on anything related to harvesting these days. (It's been 60 years + for me.)

@@mtl-ss1538 Incredible I just returned to South Africa completing a contract on a large irrigation farm in Saudi Arabia .We struggled to get 9 MT/ha avg. on 7000 ha.. What did help was that the wheat straw is worth more than the wheat itself as there is no pastures in Saudi as you can imagine , a lot of sand though.
After the stripper head goes through and leaves the majority of the plant, how much of the plant remains for the combine to thresh out when the double crop beans get harvested? Plants have more resilient stems and stalks than ever before with new genetics so if they dont decay or at least lay over, it seems like extra chances for crop loss with all that extra material having to go through the machine later on.
Typically here anyway the stripper head straw falls down and creates a thick mat on the soil. If it does stay standing its so brittle by fall the combine just blows it out the back with no effort.

I noticed the New Holland combine kept draining wheat out of its auger as it moved back against the combine until it stopped. Is that a result of the machine or the operator? I've never operated a combine and am just curious.
Most combines do this when they finish unloading. A few grain run out. Massey Ferguson has fixed this issue by have the rubber boot on the end flip upwards after unloads to catch these remaining grains.
Hi Jason ! Allways great videos. Why do you think not all farmers choose orginal header ? And will the sojabeens go in between the grainrows or just random? Regards from Sweden
No need for a break. The soil is plenty healthy. The fields after beans sit all winter until they are planted into Corn in March. The double crop is just using the ground like full season beans would. There is plenty of fertilizer on the wheat that carries over to the beans.
The grain cart pulls up and matches the speed of the combine. They just keep an eye on the auger and maintain the speed. The combine operator then speeds up or slows down to fill the cart from front to back.
Since the augers on these carts fold all the way down below the top of the hopper I don’t know why the manufacturers don’t put them on the right side.It would be so much easier on the operator.

Tracks cause less compaction and go through wet field much better. The tires leave ruts and compact the soil.
