Rambler is my favorite! Minichamp has too many useless tools. Cassic SD and Rallye are great, too. I can't believe that people can survive without a 58mm Victorinox.
Minichamp alox is the best to carry on a key ring. Tools are not useless, especially not the lemon peeler which is the best tool to open packages and cannot be found on any other knife.
I haven't had a Vic since TSA has taken it away 10 years ago and really haven't missed it. Only lately I started carrying a Vic nail clipper which is useful to clip my nails once in a while. But now I am thinking on getting back in a daily carry and prolly will go with a 58mm Classic Alox for the size and functionality. If there was an Alox Rambler I would get it but such beast does not exist in Victorinox catalog.
i love my 58 manager. that little space pen functions like a 50 dollar edc pen. the quality of manufacture makes the 58mm amazingly usefull. every tool punches WAY above its weight.
Just got my first Rambler a week ago and I think this is going to be my favorite 58mm. My Phillips screwdriver wasn't magnetic in the least though. I magnetized it myself and now it's great. One additional thing I like about the Rambler over the Classic SD is the knife blade doesn't share a space with the file which often scratches the blade. I love it.
@@richarde1355 I have a strong magnet from an old speaker. Just stick the Philips screwdriver (not the blade) to the magnet for a few hours and it's magnetized. Just used it yesterday and it is holding the magnetization well.
I have carried a Rambler for several years. I recently added a Tourist (i.e. an 84 mm Spartan), intermittently, for the rare occasions I may need more than the Rambler can handle.
As far as the small knives go, like I told others about it, I've fallen in love with the smaller size knives. You're right, most people don't realize just how handy and important they can be.
Love my Rambler too, it's always on my set of keys and never leave the house without it. The scissors and PH screwdriver was the final the deal for me to get a couple of them. Had an Escort for years, but it only has the blade and file/screwdriver. Bought a Classic SD to my mom 20 years ago and she's always carry it in her pocket. So, yeah, you can't simply live without a 58mm Victorinox 😀
My favorite keychain knife is the midnight manager. It has almost everything I need right at hand: emergency pen, light for finding where to put my key, bottle opener for obvious reasons, a blade for opening packaging, the scissors for lots of things, and the file for nail care. I edc carry either a Recruit or a Camper, so I have the tweezers and tooth pick covered as well!
I love to midnight manager because it has everything you need, scissors, pen, torch, pen blade, magnetic screwdriver and of course a bottle opener. And it doesn’t have all the things that you never use like fish scalers and cuticle pushers and things like that
The Rambler is an excellent choice, as mentioned in the video, however I find the Manager model to be a slightly better choice for my pocket EDC. The addition of a small pen to the Rambler toolset is really helpful and the weight/size difference is negligible. The author mentions needing black ink - not sure why that is so I can't really relate. He also mentions that he often loses these knives - I've never had this problem because I always carry my SAK on a titanium ring with all my keys and a good flashlight. I think the idea of a Victorinox with a flashlight is nice and maybe it's all some people need, but to me it just doesn't compare to a good dedicated flashlight that uses a regular AAA battery. My Fenix LD01 has 3 different brightness levels, good runtime, works for all kinds of situations, and I hardly know it's there. Not only that, it won't accidentally turn on in my pocket like the Victorinox lights can, which quickly drains your batteries.
It's awesome that your Grandpa gave you a SD, If mine had I'd have to lock it up, I lose SDs all the time, they generally get found again, but wouldn't wanna take that chance with one from a Grandpa. Enjoy that Rambler and have a great day!
The classic s d , for me .I have owned it for 5 years and the blade has been sharpened so many times it resembles an awl.The scissors are my favourite tool .
Very good video. You are right to make such a strong recommendation IMHO. My favorite is the Rambler. Unlike the Classic both the scissors and the knife open away from the keys on the Rambler. I use mine on my key chain and I find the Rambler is much better for use on a key chain. Keeping them on my key chain keeps them from getting lost. However I did recently lose my rambler at the airport due to forgetting to take it off my keychain before going through security. Now I need to get another one. I really miss it. I think I will stick with the Rambler.
I would love the pen feature however, I have yet to find a black ink cartridge for the 58mm models and blue unfortunately won't work for some of the things I do. Thanks for watching and enjoy your Midnight Manager!
The IDEAL combo FOR ME (loves the woods) 1) A rambler with a light (now comes in a white LED) scale mod and the toothpick. 2) A Ranger with the opener layer and scissors removed (bringing it down to 3 layers [Rambler mostly covers those functions, don't bring cans out much/most have pull tops now]) and the small blade flattened down into a whittling blade. Add plus scales a mini screwdriver (I have glasses), a firefly ferro (replaces toothpick), and helix tinder. Lanyard made of bank line or light paracord. Best woods combo, VERY little overlap, 3 layer 91mm and 2 layer 58mm. Perfection. 👌
I never leave the house without a medium size (91 or 93mm) SAK as it's attached to my keys, which I carry on a small carabiner hanging off a beltloop...but if I'm wearing trousers (pants) even in the house the Classic SD is always on me, in my coin pocket. It complements my Farmer or Hiker as they don't have scissors, plus it's the one I use the most. The small blade on it is more than adequate for any package I need to open so I always use it for that instead of one of the larger blades. Unless you're always carrying a larger SAK with scissors, there's no reason not to carry a 58mm SAK, they weigh 3/4 of an oz or 21g, and take up next to no space, plus they cost less than the price of a packet of cigarettes. Looking at getting a Rambler next so I have a Phillips when I'm carrying my Farmer.
Very similar time line for me. Midnight Manager for years, figured the Mini Champ would be the bees knees, bought it, stored it, Midnight Champ/Rambler FTW.
I like the manager in my opinion. I have the signature, and the little pen is SO useful to me because I don’t use the toothpick. I don’t regret buying it, but it would of been cool to have a screwdriver and a bottle opener!
I usually carry a 74mm executive but I’m experimenting carrying a 58mm instead. Right now I’m trying out the rambler but I keep going back to the executive for certain tools. I still love the rambler though!
I went through an almost exact same list of 58mm saks. Ended up with the manager though. I dont need the tweezers, since I always have Uncle Bill tweezers on me, so I keep the toothpick in the scale slot. I stopped carrying a full size pen, since I dont need one very often, so the scale pen is enough for me. I also prefer Mexican beer, which is usually not a twist off, and need the philips for my kid's toys. Scissors are great for crazy eyebrow and mustache hairs, nose hairs, and loose threads. Flathead is decent enough as a nail cleaner and mini pry bar, and the nail file is always handy. Blade is great for opening small packages. No useless tools on the Manager for me. Also, the edge of the flathead is great for cutting open taped boxes. It's no fun getting tape gunk on your blade, and its safer too.
Thinking about the midnight manager but didn't want to lose the toothpick and tweezers.....also I 3d print toothpicks so I can just use it and throw them after
I have a Minichamp and agree that its a bit excessive. The Vagabond offers much of the same in one layer less, but my favorite has to be the Manager. To me its the best combination of useful features and compact size making it a perfect EDC choice. The light on the Midnight Manager I just find is not bright enough to be practical, and who does not pack a more useful compact torch anyway.
I've got the mini champ escort and classic sd... my favorite is the mini champ my escort is my back up one to the mini champ because it was my first knife and it's iconic to me great video
One of my favorites is the signature lite. Mine met with an unfortunate fate. I have yet to replace it. But I now carry the sd classic. Love that little guy too
My two only 58mm models are the Classic and the Midnite Minichamp. I prefer the latter because of the extra tools. However, when I do carry it, I also carry a 91mm as well for its bigger blades. The 'cuticle pusher' is excellent for scooping lib balm from that small tube when it falls below the tube line. It works like a little spoon. I guess you could do that with the file blade as well if you're carrying a classic. Victorinox are all about being creative.
Gotta be the Rambler for me too: you are clearly a sensible and discriminating man. They need to make onein alox. I’d jump on one of those. I don’t need a pen really (possibly would if black ink: good call black essential for forms) or an led light, the Classic SD is a nuisance to keep on your keyring as the knife blade opens towards it. The Minichamp costs twice as much as the Rambler and I don’t need the newer, useless, gimicky ruler or cuticle pusher. You called me accurately too. I have a cadet: love it but it needs some scissors. I play fingerstyle and classical guitar so the file is just a must.
I had a Rambler on my keychain for years, and it is for sure a worthwhile upgrade from the Classic SD because it's not much bigger. But I have since upgraded to the Manager. Not the Midnite Manager, because I like the tweezers. But I like the pen more than the toothpick. So, yeah, I guess the Manager is the perfect one for me.
Victorinox Swiss Army, does not make a Wood Carving knife that has two carving blades, a saw, and a large roughing blade. Blades that have 58 or better Rockwell hardness or 440 or better stainless steel. Just three slots (not sure what they are called) handles. that are rounded for comfort, with locking blades. Folded no more than 3 1/2 inches long. If all the carvers out there will unite and keep bugging Vicky about it, I am sure they will listen.
Ive had lots of really cheap swiss knives growing up and honestly never used them their blades were too damn small and not very sharp. Most tools were not practical. My brother bought me a 91mm and honestly though I take very good care of my things. Ive only used it maybe once since most tools are more readily available and much more practical with longer shafts. Getting into Survival I recently began to assemble a mini kit. I bought the cheap Wal Mart multis bulkly and cheap that was a my number one complaint about these knives they are bulky and most tools are a pain in the ass to fold out. I got me a gerber Dime and I have a Leatherman Micra on the way. I dont see much use for these swiss blades. They have just never been practical to use for 99% of the things Ive done in life. Im in my 30s and never did I carry a multi tool on me because they are bulky and just not practical. Im going to start carrying them though and see how it pans out.
Hey man great review. Unfortunately, they don't sell the rambler here in India. Should I get a minichamp or a classic sd and a rally together? Wanted a lightweight sak for my keychain. Any response would be appreciated.
+Manvendra Singh I works just get the Classic SD and call it good. Unless you need the extra tools on the mini champ, then get one of those. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
If classic sd is not enough and you need all the tools of a rambler in two separate knifes, maybe another option is escort and jetsetter. Both are cheap. Only redundance tools would be toothpick and tweezers. Jetsetter has scissors, and bottle opener/screw driver combo tool but no blade, good for hoplophobic places, and escort has blade, and nail file/flat screwdriver combo. It's too late but I hope it helps someone else.
To me personally the Rambler would be the perfect key chain tool if I had more keys on it. I like to keep it minimal - currently it has a long and a short key and one of those RFID chips to unlock a door. So anything extra can add significant bulk and weight to the key chain. First I had a Gerber Dime, but it has almost twice the weight of the entire key chain and is quite bulky. I wondered with what to replace it for a long time and finally chose the 58 mm SD Alox. The cool thing about it is it weights just 17 grams. Not only the scales are slimmer than plastic ones, but you lose the side metal planks you have on regular standards, as the Alox scales are structural. So it is very thin and light and has a much better scissors than the Dime (its scissors are a joke and putting patent number on them is ridiculous - you shouldn't be able to patent mediocrity). The only downside is the lack of bottle opener, but I got one of those micro key chain titanium bottle openers that are less than 2 cm long - really tiny. Another possible downside is the knife is on the key chain ring side, but I added a micro clip so I can detach the Vic if I need.
Sounds like you have it figured out, I really like the look of the Alox SAKs but, in my world I use the tweezers often and the Victorinox ones work really well, So I just let a Rambler float a the bottom of my pocket. It's not idea, because I probably lose 1 a year or so, but I buy them used, in bulk on eBay so, I always have one and can give one away if someone needs one. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
I've been after the rambler for a while now, it ticks all the boxes for what I need for a keychain EDC. I'm in New Zealand and the retailers here want $50-$60 for them! Importing one from Amazon would be half the price but won't ship internationally :(
Wow, that's a bit expensive for one, I hope you can find a way. I did a little looking and found the same that you did. It must be expensive to ship into New Zealand. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
Cheers, yes everything tends to be expensive here. It is rather depressing hearing people from the American market talk about 'expensive' products. With a population of around 4.5 million we don't exactly have the same buying power! I tried to import some 10 round magazines for my Savage 17hmr. I could land 4 of them from USA for the same price as buying one locally. Unfortunately the problem was exporting firearm parts from USA. NZ law is perfectly ok but the freight forwarding company wouldn't do it. I landed a victorinox watch for less than half the retail price here. It's ridiculous how much importer mark up prices. Might have to come for a shopping holiday some day, I think they are starting flights direct from Auckland to Houston TX this year.
+BoiWhoEveryoneDeemsToHate MyNameShouldBeGinto depends on what you use the knife for, the classic SD is the budget choice here in the states where it can often be bought for ~$10. Thanks for watching and have a wonderful day.
Is there any in this size or smaller that just has one knife and that’s it??? . A Swiss Army knife of this size yet ..very minimalist and very lightweight for backpacking
I just want to say one thing, and that is that I've watched a bunch of these knife videos and almost everyone complains about losing their knife at some time. What is wrong you people?. Maybe I'm just lucky.
Yup, you're just lucky or you keep the knife on a keychain. I don't keep mine on one and they are constantly taking little vacations, not lost, just taking a holiday. They always turn up refreshed and ready to get back to work.
Hmm, I don't think I've ever broken a set of scissors, but the Rally is a great one too, that's why there are so many different ones, something to fit us all. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
@@Zelrick42 I did it! I tried to put in my pocket and the scissors were open. I send it to Victorinox with other 5 knifes. They repaired all for 8€. Like new with new tools, scales and equipment.

A metallica knife? Damn thats cool
OMFG, this music !?
You really do the insecure GQP stereotype gun nut well 👍😂
Rambler for me.
I can't remember the name but There is a model between the rambler and the mini champ
"Shopping Holiday" sounds like a plan, I've done it in the past and as long as there's a way to post things back it can be brilliant.
Fellow Kiwi here, you can get one from incases on eBay for just under $40NZD shipped. Thats where I got mine.
Manager ftw
I bought 4 of them at a flea market 1.00a peace 😃 how about that like brand new
i think the rally is the best because its the cheapest. theres no point paying 13 quid more for some scisors on the rambler.
+BoiWhoEveryoneDeemsToHate MyNameShouldBeGinto depends on what you use the knife for, the classic SD is the budget choice here in the states where it can often be bought for ~$10. Thanks for watching and have a wonderful day.
Using the toothpick doesn’t bother me a bit, and in today’s world there’s alcohol gel everywhere. Just clean it off.
mini champ! 😁👊🔪🔪🔪
Is there any in this size or smaller that just has one knife and that’s it???
. A Swiss Army knife of this size yet ..very minimalist and very lightweight for backpacking
Umm, if it only had one tool it wouldn't be a "Swiss Army Knife" any longer, I suggest you look at a Case Peanut or equivalent
You're right, I don't need as many 58mm as you. I need more mwahahahaha I never lose mine I just like them a lot.
+Kandi Klover 😂 they are great little knives!
What do u think of minichamp alox?
I like the look of the Alex but they don’t generally have the tweezers and toothpick, so they are a hard no for me.
The rambler is the best 58.
The huntsman is the best 91.
But why there is no can opener in this little model??
I just want to say one thing, and that is that I've watched a bunch of these knife videos and almost everyone complains about losing their knife at some time. What is wrong you people?. Maybe I'm just lucky.
Yup, you're just lucky or you keep the knife on a keychain. I don't keep mine on one and they are constantly taking little vacations, not lost, just taking a holiday. They always turn up refreshed and ready to get back to work.
Personally I love the rally. because my classic sd scissors break a lot
Hmm, I don't think I've ever broken a set of scissors, but the Rally is a great one too, that's why there are so many different ones, something to fit us all.
Thanks for watching and have a great day!

I did it!
I tried to put in my pocket and the scissors were open.
I send it to Victorinox with other 5 knifes. They repaired all for 8€. Like new with new tools, scales and equipment.
That is awesome, wonder if they do that for those of us across the pond?
@@Zelrick42
Trust me, they do!
Look at the homepage.
What is with the opening music?

✨🧸✨ 🙂👍
How can you lost this knife? you lost your whole keychain?
never, never put it on a keychain. just floats in my pocket and they occasionally get lost.
