This is the piece of music that ties North and South Korea together. I am not Korean by any means, but this version of Arirang brought tears to my eyes.
Yes Rita i agree. This the best rendition of this beautiful music ever and a magistral tribute of Maestro MAZEL to all people on this earth . Music is the universal language of emotions. peace to him.
Watching this again years later. I heard this melody sung and played many times while in Korea the year of 1960, 60 years ago. Music spans all cultures. The response from the Korean audience was from the heart. The U.S. musicians waving from the stage were also touched deeply. Oh that we could all feel this warmth!
Such a beautiful rendition of a beautiful piece of music...especially the piccolo player at the beginning and end. It is said that birds in Korea do not sing, they weep...part of the mystical angst and deep sorrow that seems to grip Korea and its people. I wish we could respond in a more humane and caring way towards these people, who have only wanted to be left alone to pursue their destiny as a whole country.
🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️💕 une version admirable ! Ces violons sont divin !! Merci Maestro MAAZEL de nous offrir tant de beauté ! Charmez les anges à présent... 😇😇😇😇🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶 🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻
@eplayersus At least the North Korean people, the South Koreans live healthy and happy lives. And I agree this is the most beautiful piece out of the whole concert.
I mean Korea has the worst suicide rates and worst inequality of all OECD nations. Many South Koreabs suffer too. But in comparison to the North it is utopia.
Many thanks for placing a copy here. This is important to show Americans the audience's response. The non-DPRK part of the audience clapped with enthusiasm, but quietly sat down after the "usual" applause. It looks as though it was the DPRK folk who sustained applause and handwaving. Skeptics might say that they were coerced, but somehow it made an impression on me. I would like to think that it was rather authentic, partly because it was "Arirang". Part 17 -- more applause!
No part 15? I remember when I saw this on TV they talked about a N. Korean woman who'd gotten arrested, I think, because some gaurds going by her house happened to hear her singing an old Korean folk song. Is this that song they were talking about?
That's not true. It did. People still remembers and talks about it. It may not changed the regime (It would be foolish to expect it) but the people have heard and NK has been changing, one step at a time. Even Russia and East Germany took small and minute internal changes before reaching the tipping point.
No need to be so curt. The orchestra addressed this about how people thought the North Koreans were stiff, but the orchestra in the room and those in the audience could tell there was tremendous admiration and affection. They were taking in every moment and every note and the applause at the end shows that.
Check out this interesting video made by a New Zealand nattive who taught English in Pyongyang for a taste of the "human-ness" of North Koreans. ruclips.net/video/KnBuzVOaMIw/видео.html
Of course it did. Their US-hating propaganda soon had a much better soundrack: watch?v=Qd1qR66gcLQ Honestly, could that be the end result for which they were invited by KJI? The lack of range/subtlety and stubborn mediocrity of their musicians must have been becoming greatly displeasing to the dear leader.

as if they didn't speak the same language or eat the same food. what a dipshit opinion
I loved this song when I first heard it Seoul, when I was a US ARMY CIC agent in the 308th Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment during the COLD WAR.
As korean, thank you so much.
@@marka.1770 I agree, along with what they did to Vietnam. And you have to include the ChiCom government as well. Total a**holes, the lot!

Great.... Impressive.... Beautiful....
and Precious Venue !!!!
Excellent!!!!!
I have heard this song in document "Calling the tune" and that ending of this song is so beautiful.
from 2:19 I begin to cry. It is not a sad song, but the situation we live in is sad. Because part of my family are in North Korea, so I feel so sad.
The true meaning of Arirang is that I know God is with me.
Therefore the Arirang song is that it transcends
from the dead passing through the living.
@portlock Yes!, I agree with you too.
God's love expressing through all, I think,,
Thanks for Your concern about it !
Music does it all, BRAVO !!!!!!!!!!!!!
PACEM IN TERRIS
Next show in Pyongyang ( IRON MAIDEN) .
Love it!

Amazing,Arirang!
such an innocent composition! its easier to make smart one but really difficult to make such an innocent compositon.
No. It is not "easier" to make a smart one. If that were true we would be overflowing in smart music but we are not.
@@robcat2075 I'd engage with this, but I'd rather just enjoy the music.
Really beautiful. Music has so much Power

When Rodman visited North Korea, he was heavily criticized by media. What was difference here?
This was an approved performance of music. He went directly to the leader and hung out with him against the US government’s wishes.
A simple Korean folk song is rewritten into a heavenly masterpiece by NY Phil Harmonic Orchastra. It's not Arirang anymore.
Korean traditional music Arirang..
North Korea, South Korea is same
Ethnic group!
me too I had a dream I got to go to north korea but someone who lived in a trailer in the US stole my money
Did this Pyongyang concert have any effect on US-NK relations?
Actually, no.
why should it? there was another intention. watch the documentary to get the whole picture!
Who arranged this
Choi Seong-Hwan from N.K.
Human feeling is the same. Can't see any difference between the people of North Korea and the rest of the world.
lol @ 11:06
"hey wanna hold my flowers?"
"no thx"

Arirang was written by north Korea
why would they be against folk song? they literally use it in propaganda
@@brunoqueiroz2759 I don't know. But there were certain songs that were illegal at a certain point. Maybe they changed it after this concert.
no. because arirang was witten in NK and they love it
@eplayersus I've had a few dreams of being in N. Korea lol

that was the intention of the artists! of course they knew they can't change the regime but they tried to plant a little seed.
what movie was this in?
It's a Korean folk song, the most famous one in fact.
Singapore summit......time to end the war, and join together.... If the NY Phil can do this, N.korea and U.S can do anything....
Who composed this arrangement?
North Korea Composer: Choi Sung Hwan
