I've lived 17 of my 21 years in California, but every time i hear Arirang my Korean blood brings tears to my eyes, and my heart aches for a home I've never known.
I'm not Korean in fact I'm Congolese (from Africa) but when I'm listenning to this song I'm touched to the depth of my soul. Even if I don't understand the lyrics.Powerful and beautiful song.
I learned to sing and love this song when I was in 5th grade in Germany (with mostly German lyrics). I have sung it hundreds of times ever since and taught it to my children. Thank you for posting this moving rendition!
Even tho I don't understand Korean, his singing of this song is fantastic! It gives me goose bumps.... I want to sing along with him! I want to eat Korean foods now!!!
I want remember that there are not sad songs. Any kind of songs or music rich in melody and Harmony reach the Heart of pubblic, that is the most important. "If the world could only hear the power of the Harmony"!!!
so proud of been korean, I was adoped to Denmark when I was 4 year old, but I never forgot Korea, I am not danish ( well I do have dansih pasport) I am Korean (0: ty for posting this
@liverpool1969100 I am very glad you said that. Your Korean ethnicity will never change even though your nationality has. I have the greatest respect for the Korean people. No, I am not Korean but Chinese. Be proud my friend!
I played this song in college many years ago - the version by the American John Chance! I didn't know how much culture was in this song. NOW - I know why it haunts me to this day. I love the melody so much I could never ever place it out of my mind. What a blessing for the people of Korea to have such a wonderful mantra! Arirang!
I've just take aknowledgment of this song through a korean friend and this is beautiful. I only knew that it was a sorrow song but about love... This video, the song or something else makes me feel a crying of love
I think Westwing episode put it best describing Han in English. Sadness so deep that no words or tears would come out. And yet in that bleakest of moment, there's a hope and unwavering spirit to overcome it all. There are a number of versions of Arirang from various provinces in Korea. Not all of them are melancholic or sad. This probably is one of the best rendition of one of the version.
I'm not a Korean and I, being 15 years old, like KPOP. I came across this while going through KPOP songs and I fell in love with this right away. It might sound absurd but I really like this song. I'll definitely search more of Korean traditional folk songs from now on.
I remember hearing this song played on Pohang beach in Korea on the night of a big fireworks festival, pretty much the whole city was there and all singing along. It was lovely it was! What an awesome summer, I hated having to come back to England :(
nice song :) truthly, first i know this song in concert orchestra Semarang, Indonesia last night this song full of soul if you listen with your heart...
“djgukfan”, I have been listening to this presentation for quite a while, has great meaning for my family and “me”, no, I am not Korean, but Okinawan. Thank you for publishing, I agree with you, its out of this world, lifts the spirit to new heights, the drummer is a spitting image of a friend of mine here in Hawai’i Nei. Good job!!
Absolutely! Every Korean should be proud of this song. In fact it could easily be their national anthem! This is a very moving song and to a non-korean, even I can understand why.
this is a very moving and unique song that reflects the profound soul of a nation and its ancient culture, even though i'm not Korean this melody touches me deeply.
@djgukfan it is said that all East Asian ethnic came from one ancestor.... so, i think we shall be proud of this culture even though we're just Chinese, right? thumbs up for arirang~
Please don't be sad, be proud of who you are and hang on to your cultural values. Look at the bright side and things will come right at the end. All the best!
Absolutely splendid - I'm trying to learn the words and this is great. PS: Youn Shim-Deok song (사의 찬미 (A Psalm Of Death) is also lovely and worth a listen!

Hi Please click "more" at the top right hand of this page for the lyrics of this 600 year old Korean folk song - in fact it is THE folk song for the Korean people.
@visiblejosh Thanks you very much for that. What you have said is exactly how my South Korean friends had explained Arirang to me. To me though, it expresses the longing of the unification of the North and South Korea. I am not sure when this will happen and when it does, it will be a difficult, painful and long drawn out process. My personal view is that the North people (not government) deserves better. Best wishes from the UK.
@BearyHairy Hi Mitch, you are most welcome, Kam sa hamnida - " Deep bow" It is a very small world, and we all most learn to respect and get on with each other. Best wishes.
On an excursion train ride in WV, I walked through a car that was all Korean Tourists. I quietly began to sing "Arirang"...the Korean group leader stood up and said to everyone, "He is going to sing Arirrang for us !" Everyone stood up and we all sang "Arirang" together ! They thanked me for my service in Korea during the war....and I complimented everyone saying " You have a beautiful country." I can only say that "I really love the Korean People and their wonderful spirit of life.
Mun Choi You are most welcome. I was glad to have been of some service in keeping Korea a free nation. "Arirang" to you and your family. May the best always be yours. It was a wonderful experience to come to know Korea and its remarkable peoples. Sincerely, Nelson Horton
i think so many countries have the same centiment with Korea - ireland, poland, greece and so many invaded, colonized during several centuries - so they think they are innocent sacrefice lamb, full of immotion. yes this is very good condition for beautiful, emotional art. especially music and literature - but i think we must know we have very wicked parts in ourselves..... the historical national grief sometimes can become fertilizer for fascism...i don;t want Korea to became Israel..
I've lived 17 of my 21 years in California, but every time i hear Arirang my Korean blood brings tears to my eyes, and my heart aches for a home I've never known.
This is the best version for sure.
That's beautiful what you said.
I'm not Korean in fact I'm Congolese (from Africa) but when I'm listenning to this song I'm touched to the depth of my soul. Even if I don't understand the lyrics.Powerful and beautiful song.
