Dude, we all learn about slavery in school! We learned about slavery in our history classes, English classes, social studies classes, anything that covered American history and our country in Michigan. Having travelled overseas, I will say there are some things that are left unsaid when you are talking to an Americans cause it's just background noise...slavery as the reason for the Civil War isn't one of them haha.

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley was asked by a New Hampshire voter about the reason for the Civil War, and she didn’t mention slavery in her response - leading the voter to say he was “astonished” by her omission.
She then turned the question back to the man who had asked it. He replied that he was not the one running for president and wished instead to know her answer.
Haley, who served six years as South Carolina’s governor, has been competing for a distant second place to Donald Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. She has frequently said during her campaign that she would compete in the first three states before returning “to the sweet state of South Carolina, and we’ll finish it” in the Feb. 24 primary.
During that same campaign, she dismissed the need for the flag to come down from the Statehouse grounds, portraying her Democratic rival’s push for its removal as a desperate political stunt.
Being an Indian I know, that Indian households in USA, NEVER discuss civil war and slavery. There might be some exceptions, but not discussing slavery is the norm in Indian households.

I don’t think she answered the actual question that she was asked about what the discussion about what slavery was like for her. She shifted to how she moved during her time in South Carolina. It’s a uncomfortable subject for her to address directly for some reason
She said it was about slavery but more about racism and show she dealt with it as the only Indian child in town.
Her Mom said to focus on what makes you similar, rather than different. She the.shared how that affected her when she faced tragedy as Governor and how it will help her bring people together as President.

Nikki, your claims are false; when you spoke of States’ freedom of choice, you meant freedom to have slavery. Why can’t a Republican be just semi-honest? You cannot fool the people all of the time.
The states also wanted freedom to leave the union. When the framers of the Constitution drew it up ( in the 1780s)they did not make seceding away from the Union a crime.
Plus, the South wanted low tariffs and the North wanted high ones. Life was complicated back then.
She is lying. She didn’t assume or forget to state slavery as the main cause of the Civil War. Otherwise, she wouldn’t had gotten angry at the questioner who called her out for not mentioning slavery. She would have laughed in a self deprecating way and said “oh, of course- I thought that was a given”. Or something like that. Getting mad and saying it was a hard question shows she was trying to pussyfoot around the answer.

The real problem is this is her third time with this exact same question in a four-year period she can no longer play like she doesn’t understand what the problem is so whatever secret she’s keeping into why she can’t say it. I’m gonna bet it doesn’t have anything to do with me it’s her other constituents, which is very interesting that she has two totally opposite constituents that she’s trying to please. What is she really hiding? I was really looking forward to her as a true candidate that I wouldn’t have to make a decision the worst of the two.
Perhaps I'm incorrect, but from what I can tell this is very clearly a symptom of Haley trying her hardest to ride the line between moderates and MAGA. Her slavery answer was her trying to find the best wording to get a pass from both groups, but she leaned too far in to MAGA and this is the result. Her campaign is based on an almost impossible line to ride, but I almost can't blame her since were she to openly be moderate she'd lose any chance of winning the primary which we saw with Chris Christie

@@MrTommygunz0482 yes she did. She was asked about conversation she had with kids about slavery. She said it was about racism which she experienced as the only Indian kid. That her Mom told her not to focus on what made them different, but similar and how that still was with her today.

The biggest Nikki issue for me is her judgment when saying she would pardon a president who was the leader of an insurrection and attempted to undermine elections. To me those are unpardonable offenses.

They taught me the true meaning of that war was state’s rights to treat their citizens however they wanted.” The first sentence of South Carolina’s secession declaration says basically “We are doing this to preserve slavery because WE THINK Lincoln is going to try and take it away from us.”
