You can have cataracts for a very long time before they bother you. A lot of times I doctors don’t even tell you that you have them if they’re small enough. And then at some point they just grow big enough to cause problems. And it’s not some thing that people have been doing that’s bad, it’s just aging. Of course, you can make aging worse by eating tons of sugar and not exercising, but cataracts or just some thing that most people develop if they live long enough.

People who go full carnivore have the same good results. Processed foods are the big culprit, especially sugars and highly refined carbohydrates of all kinds. I avoid GMOs, too; there's nothing I find attractive about eating genetically embedded pesticides in my food.
Just to add, I agree that seed oils are the devil. They tear up your arteries when they go through your bloodstream, for one thing. People don't realize how highly processed those seed oils are. How much oil does corn have, anyway? Not much. There's no way to get that much oil out of corn without a lot of processing.
Yes, you will hear a lot of opinions, even amongst eye surgeons! My advice is to wait until you are bothered by your quality of vision and if in doubt, get multiple opinions. Best of luck!
@@MicheleLeeMD Thanks, Dr. Lee! My concen, or 'a' concern, is Laser assisted versus manual. I've seen scanning microscope photos of laser assisted eyes that look terrifying. I'd prefer 'manual' but in an evaluation the surgeon who does laser was almost jumping off the ground - he was so vehement that laser is 'safer.' But another evaluating surgeon said, "it's way worse an outcome."
@@Allan-et5ig There is no proof either way that one is better than the other for routine cataracts. Laser-assisted surgery can help with astigmatism correction but that is about it. Some surgeons prefer using laser since it performs some of the steps and softens the lens. Hope that answers your question!
Thanks. Your advice inspirational, particularly because my eye doctor told me yesterday during my check-up for glasses (the little windows showed the row of letters on the right eye had a white background. but the left eye window had a somewhat yellowish background. She said that yellowish background was due to a cataract developing in the left eye).
I'm 68, my dad had a lens replacement surgery done. My grandfather went blind in the 60's do to Cataracts. So, I'm on the list. I have floater most likely in the left eye. Growing up in the 60's sunglasses would have been a brilliant thought. I when camping and hiking up the the mountains, higher bright lights. Also, would canoe days on a river without proper eye protection. Things have changed for the better, expect for my taxes, they still suck.
Just a note on UV, for glasses wearers, be sure your clear glasses have a UV protection coating. This coating will block UV as well as sun glasses that are UV coated. Most opticians have a device that can measure the degree of UV blocking in glasses if you ask. Another related note: if you are driving a car the windshield will block all UV and your need for sunglasses is only needed to block the extra glare and brightness .... not UV.
I admit I didn't watch the video. That's because I already had cataract surgery. My mom told me it was no worse than going to the market - she was right. But the best part is that they implant permanent lenses so I now have the best sight I have ever had in my life. So I'm a huge fan of cataract surgery.
My cataract surgery ended before it started and it was the most traumatic hospital experience I ever had. I have settled to rather get blind than to put myself to such trauma again.
They treated me so rudely, badly, and without consideration of my underlying problems, ignoring all that was discussed prior to the o.p., that my normally low blood pressure went through the roof. After the injection and endless waiting, I was told that I could not be operated on. They told me that I should remain in the hospital in an different room until my blood pressure changed. By than I felt like an animal in an abattoir and my intuition told me to go home. I found out that there was another person on that day that also went home without finalising his cataract operation. Now that I took the time to answer you, please be so kind and tell me your story.
Dr. Lee at 75+ and fighting cancer daily I totally agree with your standards. Head/neck radiation,30 treatments in 5 weeks, almost killed me. Now 3 1/2 years later my eyesight is terrible. Going to eye doctors next week. One in Florida wanted $8000 per eye and no guarantee. I have Medicare, Medicaid and Humana Gold plus. I don't have $16,000 . Where do I go for help? DC

Good stuff to know. Wish I had known about the UV sunglasses when I was younger. Pretty sure my cataracts are mostly from the brutal UV bombardment here in South Texas most of my life. Thanks for the info.
Thank you so much for the info about cataracts. I've developed cataracts over the last two years and waiting for surgery. I'm afraid of the side effects effects
I've developed cataracts after long-term steroid use as part of my immunosuppressive regime following a kidney transplant. I'm not diabetic and am otherwise reasonably healthy though I do suffer from UTIs and kidney infections. I'm recovering from one the moment. I have UV protection built into my prescription glasses and I only take them off to shower or sleep. The extra cost was worth it. Thanks for your video. I knew carrots were good for your eyes. LOL
I had both eyes done , unfortunately my left eye was a failure, now they want me to have a cornea transplant , I am way too scared to have to go through another eye operation , I am hoping my eyesight in the left eye will slowly come back by eating well ,,,, thank you 😊
I'm so sorry to hear that you may need a corneal transplant. That does sound frustrating and scary. Thankfully, cornea transplants are much more successful now than they were even 5-10 years ago. Best of luck ❤

Wise as it may be to avoid cataract surgery and surgery in general, my extreme nearsighted vision has been markedly improved by the plastic lenses that replaced my cataracted natural lenses. The surgeries were done rather quickly in what seemed like an office visit and called for sedation only. I still wear glasses for distance vision, but I can read books or see my computer screen without the series of glasses I wore from age 13. However, I'm 89 years old and now have other eye problems.
@@MicheleLeeMD: I might add that the degree of correction was not as great as could have been obtained. I don't recall why we decided to keep my distance vision less than 20/20.
Wow, Keith! That sounds like the best outcome one could hope for. Sorry to hear about the other issues cropping up and I hope you have been able to get some of that squared away.
I'd love to see these studies you've mentioned. Especially the one from Nepal. Nepal is not part of India, rather it is its own country. So, there is that.
Prior to cataract surgery, I didn't have that whitish curvature in my eye, thanks a lot for surgery, I'm 75 and I can see and read everything. Foods in the video, I eat them most of the time, green leafy no but steamed a little. Thank you for video.
Hello, thank you for covering this topic. I am 63 years old and have been told for years I'm getting cataracts. Problem, my right eye is legally blind. It was from a lazy eye that wasn't caught in time. Worried if the cataracts get really bad, what happens if I get surgery and the surgery on my good eye goes wrong? Then I will be totally blind. I have been told by several eye doctors not to get Lazik because I would be forever blind if it doesn't go well. The doctors tell me to run away if anyone wants to do any kind of eye surgery due to I only have one working eye. I don't drink, smoke or do drugs. Any comments or suggestions? Thank you again, love your channel.
Look for Dr John Christopher eyewash recipe. You can find it online. You steep natural herbs and rinse your with an eye cup. It has helped me a lot. Also look into “the Golden fountain “ by Coen van der kroon, it is urine therapy. Your urine has all the stem cells that you need to help heal your body
@@debwoods3831 I'm in the same position as you and JrBrass... vision only in one good eye. And I'm in my late 30s and think about stuff like this now. Reading your comment is very worrisome. Outside of positive affirmations I say to myself like "My one good eye is protected"... i try to look up different things that could lead to cataracts. Do you drink enough water during the day? I was reading about how dehydration can speed up cataracts or make them develop. Do you have a calcium deficiency? Do you have a vitamin D deficiency? or a parathyroid deficiency?
Loved your vid I learned a lot I'm 76 and have cataracts on both eyes right big I can't see properly left a smaller one, I love red wine Australia has the Best!,I'm growing a garden now with rocket, silverbeat, coriander, spring onion, parsley celery for juicing I feel this will eliminate surgery bombarding vitamins and minerals anti oxides, hopefully we shall 👀 see better, thanks DOC ❤
Thank you Dr. Lee for this informative video on helping to slow cataract development and possible surgery. I am being treated by an opthamoligist for glaucoma now and he is very closely monitoring my cataract. I am 80 years old and in 2016 I had an ocular melanoma and had a enucleation of my left eye. I have a prosthetic and am doing well. But he is very concerned about the cataract and says he will only perform surgery when and if it gets to that point, as, yes, sometimes surgeries don't always go well and he doesn't want me to lose both
I started putting these specific drops in my eyes three times a day. It's supposed to stop the formation of cataracts because it dissolves the fibrous tissues that cause cataracts. I've been taking it for over a month and I do see a significant improvement. I'll be 67 on Christmas.
Gonioscopy is a painless exam that uses a special contact lens with mirrors to see the drainage angle at the front of your eye. This angle is where fluid leaves your eye and affects your eye pressure and glaucoma risk.
Howdy Doctor, I recently discovered your videos and really find them very interesting and enjoyable to watch. I am 75 and within the last 2 years my eye doctor has been recommending cataract surgery. I suffer from Blepharitis which never really seems to be completely gone, although most times I can seem to keep it under control. I have read that many times after surgery Blepharitis becomes an issue. Do you have any advice or additional steps I should take. Thank you again for such educational content.
Hi and thank you for your kind words and comment! Dry eye usually gets worse after cataract surgery, and while you could try to prepare for it using preservative-free tears, there is not much you can do before surgery to prevent it from happening. Also, your dry eye treatment depends on what kind of dry eye you have so I would work with your eye doctor to optimize your dry eyes before surgery. I'll be releasing a video next week about how to prepare for cataract surgery if that would be helpful! I appreciate your support ♥
Hazards of delaying cataract surgery: Follow any step you want to but be careful, these steps not gonna delay ageing of the eye. For example surgery of same grade of cataract at 50 years of age is far far better than at 80 years of age. Reason: the zonules in the eye which support lens become weaker with increasing age. Corneal endothelial cells are also diminishing with advancing age which is required to keep cornea clear. So, this is the complete picture. You might delay progression of lens Cataract- but at the same time your surgeries after few years would be riskier.
Thank you for your comment. It is true in that as we age there are issues with other parts of the eye besides the cataract itself. Some people want to hold off as long as possible to have any procedure or surgery, so this video is made for those who want to delay cataract surgery and/or try not to ever have surgery at all. These tips are also good tips in general for eye health and overall health too. I appreciate your feedback!
I’m 80. Have a small cataract in right eye. Have been vegetarian at least half to three quarters of my live. Don’t wear sunscreen . No sunglasses except when driving in bright light. Take supplements that includes Idoral iodine. Estrace vag cream weekly. Very active in retirement from Nursing on woodland tree farm. Have three kids and a dog and my sweetheart. Drink red wine when I feel like it. Not sure if there’s a cut off age for C. S. ?
Hello my dad is of your age and recently got cataract in both his eyes. He is reluctant to undergo surgery but I am scared if that detoriotes with time. Would like to get some suggestions from you if you don't mind.
I just had cataract surgery 3 weeks ago still healing. I stent was to put in dr advised me that my mesh would not safely allow that. So back to the drops which isn’t effective. One thing doctor mentioned to me that l his patents he advised them to stop drinking coffee even decaf. This is one drink that definitely raises the IOP. Glad I don’t like coffee with my issues.
There is evidence to suggest that Ginkgo biloba has neuroprotective properties. This means it can help protect the nerve cells in the eyes, particularly in the retina.
Regarding smoke and fires: Hubby tried to introduce solar ovens in 3rd world countries. It was a difficult lesson. Fire is a cultural thing. Sitting around a solar oven just wasn’t the same ambiance, I guess. Some did finally understand how it helped on several levels (free up time for crafts and teaching kids lessons, safety, effective, efficient, low cost to make and upkeep, no fuel required except the sun) and others just couldn’t give up the usual ways of living their lives.
Thank you Dr. I’m getting cataract surgery on Thursday on my left eye and the right eye will also next surgery maybe this year I’m so nervous I love your video I have low blood platelets so I was on steroids for about 5 months taking like 40 pills a week and I’m diabetic so I never stood a chance of not having cataracts but like you said In the video It’s only a matter of time until we get cataracts so I felt better when you said that thank you Dr live you
Great question. Everyone is a little different. Some will take a day and see perfectly, some will take a full week or even up to a month, and most will take 2-3 days. Best of luck :)
You may have just lost a little bit in the genetic lottery. My grandmother had cataracts in her 50s and she was never out in the sun and always were sunglasses. I’ve sort of inherited that as well and will probably have cataract surgery before I’m 60. It just happens.

@@Allan-et5ig There is no proof either way that one is better than the other for routine cataracts. Laser-assisted surgery can help with astigmatism correction but that is about it. Some surgeons prefer using laser since it performs some of the steps and softens the lens. Hope that answers your question!
Very clear and good presentation, thank you!
Dozens of thanks, Dr. Lee
Thanks Dr Lee for telling me about cataracts I'm facing that surgery trying to put ot off as long as I can
Just a note on UV, for glasses wearers, be sure your clear glasses have a UV protection coating.
I worry the lens will need to be updated surgically.????

They treated me so rudely, badly, and without consideration of my underlying problems, ignoring all that was discussed prior to the o.p., that my normally low blood pressure went through the roof.
After the injection and endless waiting, I was told that I could not be operated on. They told me that I should remain in the hospital in an different room until my blood pressure changed.

I've developed cataracts after long-term steroid use as part of my immunosuppressive regime following a kidney transplant. I'm not diabetic and am otherwise reasonably healthy though I do suffer from UTIs and kidney infections. I'm recovering from one the moment.
Thanks for sharing your experience! I agree that surgery can be amazing, especially if you go in understanding the risks and benefits.

was not as great as could have been obtained. I don't recall why we decided to keep my distance vision less than 20/20.

Thanks for the info and ... You're very easy on my eyes.

Hazards of delaying cataract surgery:
Follow any step you want to but be careful, these steps not gonna delay ageing of the eye.

Hey❤
I'm sure that was a difficult feat for your husband! Thanks for sharing your (and his) experience ❤
Which countries? Did they really reject it because of ambience or practical issues?
