When Ricky was on a tour of the change rooms and the players were getting a pre game rubdown, I was sure I heard someone ask “Ricky, do you like gladiator movies?”
Gaberdine overcoats and Gladstone Bags they were the days, and the "G" certainly looks a little different now, but one thing hasn't changed and that's the Footy, the rules have changed some, but the rivalry remains the same, what a great game we have and boy don't we love it......🏉🏉🏉🏉🏉🏉
Love how players had no hesitation in performing a drop kick...even when shooting for goal. Other skills however are fairly ordinary compared to today's footballers. Also the official attendance at this game was 70,430, not 100,000 as stated in the film.
good on rickys parents. let a 6 year old kid follow others for a few miles, go to a large arena with 100000 strangers screaming, enter room where men are naked getting massage from other men, lifted up by a strange man, then walk home by himself 5 hours later . mum==' oh there you are riccardo, didnt realise you were gone' but. back then he was perfectly safe
Interesting period piece made at a time during the immediate post-war immigration boom when the keynote was integration & not multiculturalism. Ricky is a 'new Australian' a descriptor that was discarded as unacceptable, for some mysterious reason, c1980. It was also a time when the footy administrators feared the encroachment of soccer via immigrants from Britain, & Eastern & Mediterranean Europe.
When was the Southern Stand built? I assume for the Olympics in 1956. Which in this video at one point it shows the whole stand as the film follows the ball for a few moments. Checking scores for 1955 Preliminary Final it was indeed what this match on film must have been as final scores are same as 1955 Preliminary Final. Fascinating to see how the drop kick seemed almost the main mode of kicking the ball, if you had enough time in this film. Certainly kicking the ball changed from time of this film to films of the 1970's. By then it seems the drop punt was basically abolished by coaches. It crazy to think how there are multiple balls in a match now during the match, and the same ball is not used for the whole match which makes things so different as the state of the ball in a muddy or wet match would have be so different to what players have now.
That was wonderful, Rhett. Fascinating to see Thorold, Bob Rose, Des Healey, Neil Mann and Murray Weideman. Bring back the drop kick. Thank you.
You are really outdoing yourself with some brilliant content here. Like a Time Machine. Keep it up!!!
What an excellent period piece about our great game. Thanks for showing it.

haha
Great stuff 😊
Often feel the Collingwood vs Geelong rivalry from the 50s and given the finals matches since 2007 is not talked about enough.

If still alive, Ricky would be about 80.
Sadly they dont mention his surname in the doco or in the notes on the NFSA website
