Haweswater reservoir is honestly a hidden gem of the Lake District & Cumbria. Out of the way, and while Mardale valley is only a few miles from Penrith, it's a bit of a trek to get to on some narrow roads. Perfection. The construction of the dam itself started in 1929 and when complete the village of Mardale at the end of the now water was flooded. In droughts, you can actually go walk around the remains of the village! Crazy.
