Though I'm not a fan of their marketing methods, or the way they have communicated with the rest of the BJJ community, I'm glad to hear it was a good gathering.

Great video Roy! Proud to say Ryron Gracie is my instructor. It’s awesome to hear your first hand account of being on the mat with him and your positive experience.👊

Hope it is not too late to say: happy many years from now on tatami Sensei.
My peak (if I can call this) was tonight ... during my judo training and during newaza ... instinctively I (brown belt) passed the guard of my partner (black belt) using your technique ... what I saw/learnt/memorized the sequence in one of your many uploads. Just want to say to you that all your uploads are fantastique to me with a lot details in ... and a big thank you to you.

I think it is admirable that you continue to train and evolve as a martial artist. OSS 👊

    Hi Roy,
I find it hard to believe that you are 50! I have been curious about Jiu Jitsu for some time, but my brother finally nudged me to get into it. He recommended your channel, and I haven't looked back. I value the emphasis on the history of the martial art, alongside the martial art itself, the idea of promoting a community/tribe and self-development.
Quick question to you or anyone who sees this - are white belts allowed to wear coloured gis? (And I do appreciate that this might be a dumb question!)

Thanks to this family and other Brazilian JJ martial artists, this art still well and alive , other wise Judo will not keep newasa in this same popular level

Question, Sir what is the difference between your jujutsu and Gracie jujutsu all still from Brazil correct

I don't know about Roy's BJJ specifically... but the general difference between "normal" BJJ and Gracie Jui Jitsu (GJJ) is that GJJ is more focused on self-defense than sport. It's also a structured, laid out curriculum that as you complete and check things off you get your belt at X number of techniques learned, etc.
Where as many traditional BJJ gyms have a kind of "you come and work, and trust your professor to know when you are ready for a stripe/belt promo".
We don't have a GJJ gym within an hour of here, so I go to a normal BJJ gym. My prof teaches for both self defense and comp. He'll mention the best thing to do in a fight if it applies, but also mention what to do / not do if you are in a competition and what scores points, etc.
He doesn't have a curriculum though, which is probably my only "complaint" (though I love my gym overall, great people, great prof, good culture, etc). But I do wish I had a list of things to learn/complete, mainly because I'm a "task focused" person.

Gracie BJJ is trademarked by Rorion Gracie years ago and is focused on the street defense only.

It all comes from the same source but BJJ or sport Jiu-Jitsu went its own way around 15-20 years ago and is very, very different than Gracie Jiu-Jitsu which is made for fighting/self-defense. With GJJ you learn strikes, defense against strikes, defense against slams, take-downs, etc. With sport BJJ you wont learn any of these things or if you do its like a mention the first or second week and you never see it again. The teaching methods are also very different.

Well said Roy and it was a pleasure meeting you, sharing techniques, picking up a few tricks, and just good conversations. I hope we can share the mat again in the future!
