Ep.4. What it's like to take Ritalin if you have ADHD

  • Near the start of my ADHD journey, long before I got officially diagnosed, I wondered what it felt like to take a stimulant like Ritalin. And so if you are someone who thinks they might have ADHD and has wondered about the benefits of stimulants like Ritalin and Adderall, I thought I'd explain how they effect me and what benefits I have seen.

I thought I had become deaf an hour after taking my first tablet. I didn't realize it before, but my standard state was living with the roar of a thousand random conversations going on in my mind simultaneously. I only recognized the noise in its absence.

First dose: 10mg. 15 minutes later I notice that the mind chatter is significantly reduced. I liken it to standing on the sidewalk in the middle of busy traffic in a huge city, then climbing inside a nice car with good soundproofing. I can still hear the noise, but it's significantly reduced. Held an in-depth conversation about complicated topics without having my attention pulled in eleventy billion directions while the conversation went on. I didn't have any scatter-brained thoughts escape my lips either. Everything I said was much more cogent, sequential, fit together logically... I did get a bit caught kind of hyper-focusing on an experience in memory. Kept mentioning it or aspects of it over the subsequent hour or so.
Day 2. Maybe a mistake, but I tried 20mg as the first dose of the day. Mind-quieting more effective and I felt no reluctance, strain or delay getting about things I needed or wanted to do. I took a follow-up 10mg dose about 3 and a half hours after the 20mg dose and worked for about 90 minutes straight on a book I'm writing. I used headphones, good lofi music on low volume and just worked without thinking of much else.
Today is day 3. I get a better and longer-lasting effect on 20mg. I have not noticed any side-effects. Tired after lunch and actually willing to nap, which is no where near normal for my life thus far. I still think there's potential room for optimizing my dosage, but the quieter mind had the lovely side effect of also really toning down the anxiety.
    Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing. I have an unopened packet of the 5 mg starter dose. Thinking of starting the experiment tomorrow! Apparently a big clue to my undiagnosed ADHD was that I've taken speed and other drugs recreationally in the past and not really reacted the same as my peers (did not really affect me so intensely and I was still able to sleep). I also drink two pots of coffee a day and used to guzzle energy drinks. I think my smoking might have been self medicating at one point too. Hoping the meds will be a more healthy tool I can use. But will see. Still skeptical. Diagnosed at 49. Finally figured out what was 'wrong' with me. Turns out there is nothing wrong with me 🙂

I am 36 years old and for the past 13 years I have been avoiding the truth. I got diagnosed at age 23 but I already knew something was wrong with me at an early age. Having adhd gives you alot of challange as we all most likely experienced.
When I got diagnosed I didn't want have any sorts of medication or even talk about it. Now 13 years later I'm tired of running, tired of life and Im finnaly about to give in.
The past few months have been hard on me, Im constantly crying, frustrated or angry for no reason at all. The feeling that I'm tired of life hits me atleast twice a week. You know.. Not the suicide feeling. But the one where you think "if that truck would've hit me, it's all over. And I can finnaly rest"
I went to see a doctor and and a shrink and the advice is to try out ritalin. The very reason I'm watching this video
Im skeptical about it, Ive only heard the bad stories about it.
Thank you for sharing your experience.

All I can tell you is that Ritalin's non-addictive - I can dip in and out of taking it as and when I want. It did the trick for me and it works for most other people too. Some folks do not get along with it and either have some side effect (usually bad migraines) or they don't feel any benefit from it. I didn't make this channel to bullshit anyone with claims of wonder-cures, but stimulants have proved to be the most successful solution to diminished dopamine levels in ADHD-brains and I wish you all the best with trying it. :)

This was excellent, thank you. I'm older than you (61) and have been on the journey of figuring this out for a while now. There are still many things I have not settled, such as my autistic traits, but I now feel extremely confident that I have ADHD, which is no small thing for me, as I bounce around so much. (At the same time, I have always been aware that I and both my parents "chased dopamine," often with undesirable effects.) So I am about to pursue diagnosis, and while I am already on a noradrenaline blocker that I later discovered is often used as a non-stimulant ADHD med, I'm hoping that Ritalin might do for me exactly what it has done for you. In the US especially, stimulants are viewed with suspicion, because of how they work on the neurotypical brain, especially amphetamines. But based on my own experiences, and what I have read and seen by others, I don't think anyone with ADHD wants their brains to feel more stimulated in the way that it is usually thought about. I've been scared of that -- I start on a stimulant, and it does that, I'll want off it as fast as possible! I finally feel sure enough about having ADHD to be comfortable that it should do the opposite.

Got told by a psychologist this year that it's very highly likely that I have severe ADHD combined type. He did an assessment but just couldn't give me the official diagnosis. Where I live you have to go through state run clinics to get an official diagnosis and to be able to get medications. So I've been waiting for six months for my first appointment at the state run clinic. It's coming up in a month and I just want to get it over with so I can start the therapy and medical treatment. Ritalin makes sense to help you sleep, Adderall on the other hand = good luck.
Ritalin is nice because it’s not (typically) neurotoxic and in the normal IR formulation, the half-life is insanely short which means great for dosing control* at the expense of having to be on top of your doses, stomach interactions (what you eat, etc). For Adderall, you take it later in the day, you better be absolutely dead tired or have something to bring you down.

@@theadhdarmy The usual "I can't speak for anyone because everyone is different." I've tried Adderall for almost a year and then switched to Ritalin. I'm anecdotally saying that Ritalin is something you can live your life on (primarily due to sleeping). Adderall is bit too much in IR or XR formulation, you either feel nothing is happening or you're overboard. Adderall (dextro/amp salts) to me, does feel like speed, Ritalin is like a calm push, way more productive and cognitively clearer. So, imo, you may not be missing out on anything. The novelty of adderall wears off quickly and your body realize, fuck, this isn't sustainable.

Adderall is relaxing. The Psy Doc said I had as bad of ADHD as anyone he has ever seen. If you can control your environment and your attention with limited stimuli and a low carb diet you can manage without.
ADHD is really Executive Function Disorder just to be clear. Brian wants to do everything at once and now and has a hard time waiting. ADHD brains are faster than Normal. Sensory stimuli is the worst.

I am decent at so so so many things like plumbing, electrical, prop making, art, soccer, maintenance(my adult job lol), carpentry, etc, but I’m not great at one particular thing and the part that kills me is I know I can be I just can’t ever follow through without my damned brain turning its attention to something else trying to chase down something thinking this new something will be the something that I have been after my whole life. Fuck it’s a mess up there.

Failed uni twice when my 2 best friends went on to do a doctorate and a masters. Have been on an SNRI for a few years after anxiety/depression took over. Think a stimulant will help executive function but stimulation of norepinephrine from even my SNRI raises BP and has reduced my sleep to a fractured state.
Think a stimulant that raised NE and DA ( dopamine) is going to hit hard and I also find the NRI makes me sweat a lot more.

Even at that sweet spot though, it isn't a perfect fix - definitely helpful but a little disappointing.
Likewise my sleep has been slightly better since taking it.

I'm taking Ritalin LA 40mg after switching from Adderall XR 30mg because adderall is in shortage. The issue is, ritalin doesn't seem to do anything for me. It makes me supppppper irritated like super super angry for no reason at all. I still feel tired, and I don't have motivation to do anything throughout the day. I just wanna lay in bed on my phone. When I was taking adderall XR, I wanted to get everything possible done in a day. I was motivated, energized, sociable. I just don't feel that on Ritalin. I dont know if it's worth it for me to keep taking it to see if maybe my body has to get used to it from being on adderall, or I should just stop taking it all together. Has anyone had this experience at all?

    • @jimwilliams3816
      @jimwilliams3816 Год назад +2

I'm afraid I can't offer personal insights, as I am not yet on a stimulant. But I am looking at the possibility now, as I do struggle with the irritability and motivation issues you describe, among others. I'm thinking about Ritalin, as Adderall scares me more -- amphetamines are widely vilified in the US. But I do know from reading that people have different neurologies and respond to different meds. It sounds like Adderall is what works for you, and may yet be what works for me, though I sure don't want to contribute to the shortage and make it harder for you and others to get the meds you need.
My guess is you haven't gotten any replies because the video featured Ritalin. If you haven't already, you might post the question to another channel -- How To ADHD just did a thing on the Adderall shortage. Or maybe you have been able to get XR again, though the shortage is not over, which stinks.

Insightful video. I am 39 and was recently diagnosed with inattentive adhd by a psychiatrist. He prescribed me 18 mg of XR Methylphenidate, which I believe is essentially the same as ritalin. I am interested to try it to see if I can FINALLY reach my potential in my career. As someone who struggled academically and could never figure out why, other than wondering "maybe I am just not an intelligent person", it would be incredible if I had some validation that maybe it wasn't an intelligence issue, rather a neurotransmitter issue. So why haven't I taken my first dose yet? Well, I am a bit scared. I do occasionally have some physical anxiety, and I am sensitive to any sensations with my heart that seem abnormal, so I am scared to take this XR tablet and potentially have to deal with a full day of panic or heart palpitations. I guess there's only one way to find out.

80-90mg a day? Isn't the max 60mg? And taking 10mg doses? That's like one pill every 2.5 to 3 hours?

Anybody else out there been told they're too old to try the stimulants? I'm so aggravated - would really like to see just for a minute what it might be like to have a better integrated brain function after a lifetime of struggling.

Ritalin made me zone out and caused me to be suggestable to orders. My mother got a prescription for me without me being screened or examined. They were tiny little pills, which she was putting in my food. She usually didn't cook for me but had recently begun again (I was 11). She really liked it because she could make me do chores around the house and I would just do it, shuffling around. I found the prescription with my name on them and realized what she was doing. I poured them out all over the carpet. She tried to save some of them, but never bothered trying to cook for me again.

this is incredibly f-ed up and highly illegal. You have to get it prescribed to you by a doctor and the doctor gets blood pressure and ecg done before it is prescribed, and the dosage increases over months under supervision with a professional. I hope ur okay now? if you are still a child call cps.
