  • I've heard and always thought that white gas stoves are far better than alcohol stoves for winter camping if one is melting and boiling snow for water. This video shows how much fuel and time it took to melt enough snow for one liter of water using my Stanley pot, a Trangia stove, a Fancee Feast stove, and a MSR XGK EX.

I just watch your next video and it seems like you got it covered.

Alcohol stoves are great for small jobs like solo cooking or boiling small amounts of water. However they're not really suited for things that require a large amounts of energy like melting snow since alcohol contains about half the amount of energy that petroleum-based fuels do. One thing I would suggest that would increase the accuracy of your results would be to use a wider pot, maybe something like an Alpine 2 or another 1.5 or 2 liter pot.

Thanks for watching and for you thoughts. In the abstract, I think everyone knows the heat density of alcohol is lower than petroleum based fuels. Plus, I suspect the stoves used for white gas burn more efficiently. I thought seeing results in practice would be interesting.
