Feel free to go to Sub-Saharan/central Africa and demand tribal leaders and warlords concede all lands deemed habitable for Gorillas, to be formed into protected preserves policed and protected by who-the-fuck-knows, funded by no-god-damned-idea. We'll make you a nice trophy for you when (and if) you return. But I suspect you'll just sit somewhere with air conditioning and bitch and moan on the internet. Since the fact of the matter is, the Zoological community is currently saving these amazing animals from extinction and ensuring the mistakes of our past might eventually be corrected. Work that is expensive and tireless that needs money to be done, so sharing experiences with the public and educating them in the process is a way to do that. Then good.

It is deplorable enough to cage gorillas for nothing that was no more than a fault of being a lesser Species. Then you have to give them an environment of concrete steel beams. That place should be closed down. What's more pathetic are the people who spend money to teach there children that zoos/gorillas are for entertainment. And then these zoologist will Wonder why gorillas are endangered species. Because zoos like this need to make a living as they buy kidnapped wild Species to fill them.

We know that a lot of Zoo's are helping to preserve and maintaning wild life population, like the black rhinoceros and Oryx Algazelle by transfering some individuels from zoo to natural reserve and this help to switch the conservation statuts like the Oryx Algazelle who pass from extinct in nature to critically endanger.
Zoo are a good way to educate people and giving them a good experience with animal because it's not anybody that are ready to spent 10k to travel in Tanzania for exemple to came close to wildlife animal living indide protective invisible boundaries, but i'm not saying that every zoo are perfect but they have responsability in the animal welfare and conservation like the przewalski horse, Oryx Algazelle, black rhinoceros, Spix Macaw ...

Unfortunately for them, now, this might be their only hope.
By way of the very being that caused their demise during the Covid outbreak.
There are reports of huge losses in primate populations, and not only with gorillas.
But the gorilla populations took it really bad, they had no defense against contact with humans who had it.
Something like species wide 80% fatality with them, with chimpanzees,I'm surprised any of them are alive in the wild now.
In the zoos, they quarantined all the primates to a skeleton crew of care to prevent exposure.
What you see now in zoos for some primates are the only hopes for repopulation in the wild.
They are on the critically endangered list for extinction in the wild.
There's not enough of some of them in the wild to bounce back.
There is hope, and there is wondrous work being done to make that happen however it can be done.
