Just wanna give you a big thanks for getting me out solo sailing. Left yesterday to sail from Stockholm to Gothenburg on my first solotrip!
My family left Stockholm in 1881 bound for Boston. Greetings brother from SV Free Spirit, Tarpon Springs, Florida
Godspeed!
I'm leaving Loftahammar on Monday, solo to Gothenburg around Sweden!👍
Nice, I am from North Carolina but I lived in Gothenburg for 6 months in the year 2000 and didn't appreciate the water at all. Now I wish I had.
Ahhh, that was nice! Great to have you around for a few days Sam and thanks for the trips out on the boat! 😀
Best sailing channel!!
It's great to see you near my home town after all these years of following your adventures. Great video!
Sam, you are the man!!! I think this is one of your best videos yet! That footage that Andre got of you was epic!! Thanks again for taking us along!.......⛵⛵⛵
Just out travelling the world and meeting the coolest people. Sam is the man!
Paragliding and sailing are the perfect combo.
We will be living on our Catalina 30 in a few months. No soft deck. But the windows need to be resealed. . I've done so much to our boat Ophelia. Diesel furnace, solar system. Required both 12v and 120v system. Also just rebuilt the ZF 5 on my kitchen table.
We have the westerbeke 12c . Not much power but it ships fuel. We absolutely love her. Could use a little more insulation up her in the PNW Vancouver Island.
What a great episode. Thanks Sam!
so awesome to see you sailing in our country, i work in a naval textile and sail repair shop in the vilamoura marina, in the algarve, it would be amazing seeing you come thrue here!!
smooth sailing Sam!
This Andre guy seems awesome
Great adventure! Wonderful when you meet such nice people who share their community with you. Cheers ⛵
Thanks!
Thanks!
This place was fantastic.
I find backing up too, and I have a fin keel. I have learnt that I need over 4 kts in reverse for the rudder to have any impact.
You could stick skateboard griptape on the underside of the pump to keep it still and give yourself occasional boatwork fixing up the deck.
I’m impressed.
So - lesson learned: Do It Yourself can only happen after you Fix It Yourself. Nice aerial photography along the cliffs - very cool. 19:10 to 20:11
I lived in Portugal for several years. If you're sailing around the country, make sure you visit Portimão and Faro on the south coast. That's my favorite part of Portugal. And if you can get in to the interior some time, you have to visit the Alentejo area and get some proprietary Alentejano bread.
Hey Sam, been watching your videos for years! You've inspired us to buy a boat of our own and take to the seas. We're about to leave Falmouth, UK and begin our circumnavigation - Hopefully, we'll catch you out there!
Epic episode. Awesome paragliding footage by Andre.
That was epic...
Well said
Awesome videos and beautiful area. Now I’ve added paragliding to my “must try” list. Thanks to Gemma & Andre for sharing the knowledge and footage. To Gemma, I have to pull the sails in the same way 😂. Sam, what was the fridge?
Thanks
Great episode! Docking while under sail! Very impressive. I have aspirations now.
Awesome! Thank you Gemma and Andre. I've heard so many nice things about you so it was really nice to see you in a video with my kideo. You guys are amazing!
Your son gives so much joy to so many people.
Loving these vids with Andre. I have been watching both your channels for years 👍👍
Sick!!.....for the algorithm! Also btw just so cool to actually see a place where they built a wall literally around the whole town for protection. How things change and still remain the same.
Going South Peniche is a sheltered from the north and neat passage anchorage, fishing port prob pretty busy. Going South Cascais is fab and has good anchoring though marina is most expensive around there during the summer. Further south Sines has good anchoring and short walk to old town and stores. Looks very industrial from offshore with tall chimneys etc, though you see none of that from the old town.
Have you noticed how everywhere you stop Francis Drake had been there before you?
Another great update from Sam Holmes Sailing! Lovely Portugal. I hope to visit there some day soon. Thanks for sharing.

If the sea gets any more lumpy, and the feel of realism: I might need to throw some fenders out on the side of my chair. :0/
Maybe just putting a reef in my T-shirt will do the trick.
Great video. Your meeting/interview with Andre was lots of fun.
Great vid mate. 👍
Nice Sam ! Yes my Cape Dory 28 didn’t back out of slip cooperatively , she favored backing starboard if I recall correctly ( been a while ) Had a 1 cylinder Faryman tractor diesel , which was underpowered , but reliable
Same for my CD27. She starts backing straight-ish and then falls off to the side she prefers that day. First skill I had to master was back and fill to get spun around. LOL.
Almost a classic Sam Holmes video… something broke but there was no drilling of holes in the boat
Another great video! If you put a wet rag under the pump it stops it sliding around.
Great tip!
Love your videos bro. You inspire us.
That was another great video, thank you Sam!
Great video
Incredible shots, what a pretty fish!
Visit Ila Berlenga (island) close to Peniche. It's fascinating!
Thanks Sam. You made my day brother. Great video today. 🎉
Amazing Sam.
Those leaning trees look a bit like I feel!
It is the best sailing channel
nice video and outstanding footage of you paragliding.
Great great video Sam! You are so so awesome doing this solo sailing thing LoL. I wish I could double n triple my thumps up. I can't wait till you post another!
Thanks so much!!
HEY SAM, could you do a video on the passage water problem, with coastal cruisers gone ocean nomad ? ( need for emergency de-sal )
most people don't even know the difference between a coastal cruiser and a deep blue, they just see a bigger more expensive boat, and a smaller less expensive boat.
then, when they take to the sea, they are overloaded with bottled water, not realizing how much that is going to slow them down...
and that there is that feedback problem with the smaller coastals, because it's slower, you have to add more water weight, which makes it even slower, ect.ect. ect.
NICE
Burry that rail Sam
Dogs are so funny, they’re blindly loyal to their master till anyone turns up with a lead and asks if they want to go for a walk
Cool video 😊
Para gliding off of world famous nazare cliffs that you sailed to. I don't think living gets any gnarlier.
By the time you have thought about reefing its too late you know that lol
Mahalo Sam! I look forward to your videos each week. Top Sail Youth Programs use wide woven belts that go around your waist! A hook is attached at belly button level that you always, "Hook In"! Then you have two hands to work with! The number one rule at sea is, " Always have three points of contact when moving about the ship" ! Such as two feet and a secured Hook! Fair Winds and Following Seas!
Nice seeing you on Portugal, please do a stop at Lisbon
Great Real sailing, place the pump on a crumpled T-shirt or rag or towel for grip I found works, love the wind vane communicating very well the conditions
Thanks for the tip!
Bought a paraglider cheap off Facebook. Have had a few attempts before learning how important the location was. Finally found a step enough hill with head on wind. Waiting to take the leap of faith. Cheers
Get training, aviation is no joke!
Beautiful flying footage! Would be cool to remotely turn on your camera from VirCru to capture interesting activity around the boat, or perhaps a quick horn blast to locate the boat if it's missing... Pretty nice app!
wow was not expecting the remote control paraglider nerd fest in the middle of the vid. for a moment i thought Triumph the insult dog was going to pop onto the screen.
😊 saling but look for the orca wals G straat
Suggestion for a video. What do you use to decide whether or not it is a good time to sail. I use windy but looked at wind and gust and it said 4.5 knots and gust of 11. I got out and the wind was around 20 and the waves were very high, rollie. I’ve seen you provide some things you use but would like to see more of why you make decision. Love your videos by the way.
I've heard of some people with long-keelers using a small outboard on a bracket off the bow quarter just those dockside reversing moments.
Excellent content. Best channel on RUclips. But where is the pretty lady in the white dress?
This is what I call, living.
Sailing in the middle of that orca territory right? The pod wrecking boats. Any worries?
Portugal looks amazing. I’ve added Nazaré to my list of Europa destinations for 2024. I’m thinking 7-10 days there…any recommendations?
What happened to the 5 minute 'live' clip of you & Erik winning the race?! It still shows up in the notifications, but not posted on your home page?

Nice, Sam. If you get a chance could you let us know about your Visa deal? Residency and all that. How can a solo sailor deal with a 90 day window?
What’s the name of this town? Great video. Thank you. Greetings from Norway.
What is up with that last scene...in background "Cat crossing" sign lol
Need to know more about that paragliding rig. Would like to try. Any info would be appreciated
How long to inflate that dingy...your very patient 😊
Gunnels in the water! Nothing more fun than getting your feet wet! :-)
I just got a sailboat. I'm wondering if you have anyplace or anyone to contact about getting a new centerboard keel for an older boat?
Sam, are you in or near Lisbon these days?
Where is the "castle town" at 20:25?
? I wonder if you could literaly back wind the jib attached to to the wisker pole., the wind going from bow to stern???blessings...m
To leave a dock when blowing into it...m
You could just untie the boat and it would drift backwards out of the slip without the sail in that case
Am I the only one dying to know what happens when you piss on salt?
Whats the castle town name Sam??
Sam I couldnt find your friends' paragliding links. Please update when you can.
So most of the time youre Solo, but I never see you wearing a Lifevest or harness. IMO this is unwise even for experienced sailors. Some random occurence or rogue wave and youd lose it all within seconds, and VirCu or any other technology would not save you. At least when you need to set anything on the bow you should observe this precautionary measure or at least have your radio or epirb attached.
Whether intentional or not, thanks for keeping your videos around 20 min as thats about my attention span. Great video though Sam!
Its in the video title
The last shot, i saw cars driving on the left side? Where are you? Thank you for great videos!
What's the boat monitoring app?
Cat crossing?
I cannot believe you are ocean sailing without your halyards in the cockpit. 😱 I'm a lake sailor and that was the very first upgrade I added to my boat.
My boat actually came with them lead to the cockpit but I moved them to the mast. A lot of offshore sailers also prefer it that way. Its often easier to reef from the mast and raising and lowering the sail only takes a minute anyway so usually not too difficult to keep the boat on course.
@@samholmessailing I've done the same thing. If the track gets stuck or the halyard is wrapped around a radar reflector or something it is MISERABLE to have to run back and forth from the mast to the cockpit. Way rather clip myself into the mast and do everything from there and safely make my way back. Love your videos man, especially the paragliding stuff, keep it up!
@@samholmessailingso informative, thanks 🙏
Great video Sam. Paragliding looked awesome! You are starting to look like a salty old sailor. Find a barber in your next port😅
@@RobHarenI dig the wild man wind blown surfer look.
How do u solve problem of tides and plan routs?
Wait, dinosaurs and their footprints aren’t in the Bible. I’m offended in a tremendously biblical way. I can only imagine Ron’s reaction when you get back to Florida.
FYI, the fish you caught was an Atlantic Bonito, pretty good eating. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_bonito
Nice Bonito! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonito
Thanks!
Thanks so much!
