I clicked on this faster then Lego canceled this theme
Same😅
Ouch
True, but ouch
Ex-LEGO Shop employee here. You nailed it exactly. The box designs and push for the app killed it. We were asked to demo it in store, and no one was interested. People come to LEGO for physical sets, not more excuses to use a screen.
One of the crazy type ghosts in the hidden side app had a description that went something like, “one day, he started thinking the entire world around him was made out of plastic bricks”. Lego eventually changed it to something more generic though.
5:19 that's honestly the biggest shocker. I was convinced this line was set in New England or Cascadia
It is on the east coast, but more like Florida than Maine
there is a crocodile (or alligator…) in one of the sets, which limits the options.
@kailahmann1823 ye I realised the exact same this morning
Though I have no idea what the habitat of crocodiles in America is, I associate them exclusively with Florida
I just realized - Hidden Side is Lego's original Stranger Things. It's a shame that the app and poor branding meant the theme didn't click
Stranger thing wasn’t the first show about pre teens exploring the paranormal side a small town, it’s genre Parody like most of legos themes.
My second oldest son thought about using the ghoul parts as add-ons to the cyber-byters from nexo knights and the ghosts from Ninjago possession.
Just a friendly reminder we had 10-11 original themes by the end of the 2010s where half way into the 2020s and we only had 3 hidden side really did walk so dreamzzz can run let’s hope it lasts long enough
can't believe hidden side is on Lego rewind already it only after 4 years after its discontinuation. Wished I saw these more on stores cause they weren't featured much. My favorite of these has to be the high school and the bus set.
My favorite is the shrimp shack - it has this look of questionable sanity standards you'd expect of such a building.
This theme is what killed my love for Lego when I was in middle school. I thought that phone targeted pursuit was the direction Lego was going in and wanted no part of it. This series has given me a chance to see the positives behind this theme. Now I find the theme incredibly interesting.
From what I know, having talked with the creative lead on hidden side, it and vidiyo were conceived as new forms of play. The Lego group has done some extensive research on play and try adding different forms of it to different themes. Like how friends is more focused on roleplay while creator 3-1 is about sorting, taking apart and rebuilding. Integrating an app was supposed to be a new form of play, and hidden side was sort of a trial run for vidiyo
Unfortunately, it didn't go great for either theme.
I love hidden side, I wish Lego hadn't fumbled the marketing on this theme , also my hidden side lighthouse had the Trans neon green ghost accessorys so yours may indeed be a factory defect
I think you're right. That accessory bag being molded in the wrong color was a pretty common issue when the sets came out.
Hidden side was killed by its marketing. I didn't pick up any of the sets because the adds made it seem as though the app was necessary for enjoying them, and I had no interest in apps. If they'd have just shown the sets as is, I would have got some.
Wave 2 must've went completely under my radar, that observatory looks amazing!
The mecha connected to the fire truck was a reference to Studio Trigger’s Promare.
Say what you will about the cancellation of Bionicle G2; but frankly, if you ask me, the death of Hidden Side is in many ways a tragedy worse than even that.
"You could put them in Maine!"
_Stephen King would like to know your location._
I snapped up three of these at a lego show, got the stunt plane, 4x4 truck and dragster.
Hidden side babbbbyyyyy
Alot of these sets could pair really well with scooby doo sets
That fire truck set was the only Hidden Side set I got, and it was worth every penny. Aside from the references, it’s a genuinely solid build with the heft I want LEGO to put into their fire trucks more often.
I collected the Hidden Side buildings but wasn’t interested in the vehicles. I did get the fire truck because it has 1 of the 3 macguffins. I finally built it recently. It’s great!! I know exactly what you mean by the heft. The mini mech that the back turns into works surprisingly well. I’m glad I picked it up!
I was a little old for new LEGO themes directed at a younger audience but I think I would have bought some of these if they placed less emphasis on the game.
2:14 I missed a perfect opportunity for one of my classic mock puking noises :(
The only hidden side set i ever got was the boat set. It was really fun to build, and it a really interesting display peace on my shelf. I have Parker up of the to with her phone in her hand trying to take a picter of the ghost while the ghost is tryinh to attack her, its a fun little action scene.
Its funny hearing the box art might have been what killed the line, because that what drew me to the line. The colerful art looks really nice, and made me interested to see what was up with it. Guess thats just me tho.
@@oneofmanyalexs My point was that, Lego’s box art should clearly and instantly communicate what contents you get with the set, and this box art was just… confusing for most people. They couldn’t tell what parts of the sets were “real” or not. And even if the app was explained to them, that just turned them off more.
No way I have only that same set, too!
@@NickonPlanetRipple"is this even LEGO?" is a phrase I've heard a lot from people looking at the line's box art or promotional artwork. These paintings were definitely unique, but that goes at the cost of clarity, especially for casual consumers who aren't especially into LEGO.
Also, the box art often depicted monsters that weren't in the set, which could definitely cause confusion.
I always wanted to combined this with the Ghostbusters sets
This theme had so much potential:(
This is one theme I warmed on the moment it was canceled. I still thought Lego would return to making lots of home grown themes, but alas. I always wanted the ghost dog, but this theme came out at an odd time where I was rarely buying Lego, usually retired Star Wars or BIONICLE. Good theme, with bad marketing.
AND I
AM STEVE and I'm gonna enjoy this video
I wish I got in to this theme when it was around I was just so deterred by the terrible marketing
I honestly really liked the app, and had fun collecting all the ghosts.
Dang, I never knew the sets looked this good.
Let's go, new Rewind! So sad I missed this theme...
I should’ve never slept on this theme.
This series gives me such an appreciation for these themes that I never would otherwise. I too thought it was an app first and a lego theme second, but now I lowkey really want that lighthouse build
If I had a nickel for every time Lego designed a great looking villain and then didn't include them in any sort of physical way in any set, I'd have at least two nickels. RIP Lord Vortech.
WoOoOoOoOoOOoOo Happy Halloween nick! great video man, enjoy your candy.
i know you say it’s set in the american south, but this theme’s builds just feel so much more east coast to me, im an atlantic canadian myself and that’s kind of why i was interested in it, it felt like an adventure in my own admittedly gloomy and run down home. there’s a lighthouse, seafood restaurants, it feels very local to me. i didnt really get any of the sets, my priorities were elsewhere, but i really liked the idea of just converting these into regular builds with no ghost stuff on em, just some very well-done, mundane structures, that’s a vibe i really like. plus, i like how it keeps the shades of green consistent with ninjago’s ghosts, it feels like they were building a visual language of that spring green being the colour of spirits and such, i like when themes can relate to each other like that without being literally in the same universe.
I see it as east coast too, just much closer to Florida than to Maine.
6:42 Sadly this was what killed my interest, though the modularity of making everything possessed by a ghost was a cool concept. I especially love the monster house.
I love monster minifigs and builds of buildings that at least pass for livable/workable spaces from one side. Not big on vehicles but it makes sense for characters to have reliable ways of getting from one location to another.
I'm mostly a knights vs. monsters kind of guy, but I understand it takes a particular type of nerd to find knights and medieval peasants more relatable by default than modern day city dwellers.
I WISH I had bought one of these sets.
I love this series
Hidden Side was such a cool theme.
This theme certainly had some great elements that could be used for mocs. I actually bricklinked Vaughn Geist's head and gave it to one of my UFO aliens to help expand their character roster. He now is Alpha Draconis's 2nd in command and part time scientist (hence his goggles). His smoky trans purple head fits perfectly with all the other aliens head colors.
Hidden Side: Hidden from the Public
my all time favourite lego theme... gone too soon.
I think what also didn't help with Hidden side is what The Cosmonaut touched on in his LEGO FOMO video. Hidden Side was an entirely new theme to people and they didn't give it much of a chance because it was new, whereas LEGO Fortnite will succeed because those same people spent 7 years with Fortnite and it will remind them of all the good memories they had.
Really goes to show how the time we spend with something influences its reach with people.
Getting kids to get the app when parents wanted LEGO because it has nothing to do with apps feels like further salt in the wound of this theme's cancellation.
I miss Hidden Side, didn't do the AR phone stuff, but I liked the builds that weren't vehicles.
As a huge paranormal and ghostbusters fan, i love these sets, and own quite a lot of them
Man I loved this theme. I got the entire first 2 waves, but kind of fell off around the third. I still break it out every year for Halloween, and even made a custom graveyard that incorporates both the Hidden Side and Monster Fighters ones.
I love this theme, I got them all. At first the box design was the reason I never looked closely at them. Then my sister got me a set and I was hooked.
Also, Hidden Side seems to have some inspiration from the 2012 Monster Fighters theme, especially the castle from each theme and both have sets named Ghost Train.
Good Death Stranding reference 👏
Couldn't have said it better myself! By far my favourite theme from its era, and one I've been slowly working to completing over the years. Each set is just so great, on their own or together!
Hidden side was such a unique theme. It had such fun builds and a great vibe, I wish I had collected some myself, especially the train that one I wish I got the most.
Great video as always, I know it'll be a great day when you upload.
I tried really hard to stick with this theme, and I even tried playing the app once in a while, but it got to a point where I just stopped and didn't bother going back. The sets are fantastic, I still love the Train build and even got 2 more, but the road vehicles were so big they couldn't fit on my shelf and eventually took it apart. The theme is original, but I'm right there with ya, the boxes I threw away then and there at the Lego shop after buying, and I didn't even bother with wave 3, and the haunted school was too expensive for me to get at the time.
I'm glad I got to experience this theme at least, not my all-time favourite but was a nice little focus for a while, I wouldn't mind if somewhere down the line we get references to it, whilst it's more modern than most nostalgic themes I think it has it's place in Lego's History enough to get maybe some blue ghost minifigs or some other characters.
Wow those buildings and vehicles actually look great! I wish I did pay attention to this theme, seems like Lego can't develop an unlicensed theme without incorporating an app or TV show anymore
man it feels weird seeing nick make videos on retired lego themes thath arent very old.
I cannibalized the flat bed on the train, and took it's magnet coupling, but I still have the locomotive and box car, just with the wall bricks flipped inside.
Ngl,my favorite part of the series was how “realistic” the sets felt, instead of a generic utopian metropolis like Lego City the more gritty theming made it feel more true to life, not much places irl are perfect examples, stuff is old rusted broken or just plain used, every build in hidden side captured that feeling
I remember seeing Hidden Side, thinking "that's a cool idea for sets; like a combination of City and Monster Hunters", and then seeing that it was all a glorified ad for their app and instantly knowing it was gonna bomb. Lego still hasn't learned, in my opinion. I'd much rather have physical instructions that I can hold in my hands than have to download them to my phone; which itself is already jam-packed with other things. If I'm taking the time and _spending the money_ to play with Lego, then I want it to take as much attention away from my screens as possible. If it can't/won't do that, it's not worth it; no matter how good the actual set may be.
Now that the apps are defunct media, I might try and hunt down Agents & Hidden Side sets, but I have other Lego priorities atm.
The app doesn't even look that good at least Ultra Agents' app had LORE! Also hidden side shows a wider issue of the lack of shelf life lego sets have it's just they are there and then suddenly they are gone.
I genuinely remember skipping this theme because of the box art and marketing. I didn’t know the sets were normal objects that transform back and forth without rebuilding.
I adored this theme and wish I could've afforded all of them. Amazing Lovecraftian vibes killed by TERRIBLE marketing.
I'm still not over the bizarre ending of this theme's story. According to a now-deleted "halloween special" that strangely came out after the theme was already cancelled, the vampire-like guy in the last wave was apparently meant to be a king from another dimension, who went around feeding realms to a lovecraftian cosmic entity (depicted in stickers in the castle set) so that it wouldn't consume his own. The villians from that wave were meant to be the spirits of people from worlds the entity had previously devoured.
This makes the theme's sudden cancellation feel slightly ominous, like this entity was so incomprehensible that trying to make a set of it forced them to scrap the entire wave.
Also, the entity was depicted different all 3 times it appeared. In the set, it was your typical mass of tentacles, in the show it was a giant mouth in the sky, and on the box art (and in the app) it was a humanoid creature with a similar mouth in its chest (which is definitely the least interesting of the three options).
Like I said, he had a Silver Surfer thing goin' on
It saddens me, both hidden side and vidyo had neat builds and minifigures, but the overly aggressive push of the apps tied to it came off as desperation to capture kids attention on lego's part, I hope dreamzzz is a sign that lego isn't gonna try and shove apps into their newer original themes
I hope you make a review for Tobias and the arcane merchant , you are the first person that came to mind for a review of that insane film
You're not the only one. Unfortunately, I watched it and couldn't think of anything to say
@NickonPlanetRipple oh i see :(
Just in time!
It probably says something to the audience Lego was targeting that I saw these sets for sale in the Apple Store of all places
I love these videos so much
Happy Halloween!
Bro, i love your videos! I like to see more mocs from you :)
Greetings from Germany!
I don't know lego history well, but this is probably the only representation of the South in lego form...
so happy that theres a new vid, have a great halloween nick!!
I love this theme, I like it more than Nexo Knights and Monkie Kid. I hope lego tries rebooting Fright Knights as a Vampire themed modern castle subtheme.
Five years early, I see...
aye hes backkk
5:15 I'm legit surprised that it's *not* set in Maine tbh
@@paulleow8017 Yeah, the school sure looks like Maine architecture. I think it’s set in new Louisiana or Florida. Somewhere like that.
This is one of the themes I am angry I missed out on.
Love dis
Hooray!!
man love the bcakround music you used👍, could you plz maybe link it in the description or the commnets
@@glsh3982 It’s listed in the video as each track starts playing, for a few seconds anyway. It’s right there on the screen.
@@NickonPlanetRipple thnak you (:
My biggest disappointment with Hidden Side is that we never properly got a video game that played like a kid friendly version of Silent Hill or Resident Evil or the like.
ALso I found out recently that the ghost claw parts make for really cool lightning Tekko-Kagi claws for Jay.
A more proper game would have worked very well for this theme. It has the right mysterious exploration vibes for it.
If you imagine the colored tiles in the location-themed sets being replaced by hidden puzzles, you'd basically already have levels from The Room.
@@kevinm5940 That would be genuinely kinda awesome and certainly help give the toys more interactivity with the app than just "Turn thingy here to tap on app."
@@kevinm5940 Yeah, that'd totally be awesome and arguably a way better integration of the app and toy than just "Tap randomly on the screen and maybe flip a doo dad on the set I guess" like what we got.
"The graveyard goes well with the school." 😨
Newbury is a creepy town. You'd be surprised how many places are right smack dab next to a cemetery
I miss the days when lego would have 2-3 seasonal originals going at once. Now we just have the one, if were lucky (much as i do like Dreamzzz), the triad of Ninjago, City, and Friends (i dont fully count Monkie Kid since it doesnt appear on physical shelves), and the endless deluge of licensed themes that ive come to hate significantly less than i used to just by removing them from their context.
Even if i still dont care much for the realistic skin tones on humans...
Wish i didnt miss hidden side, but it was juuuust before i properly got back into lego as a full scale hobby.
At the least, dreamzzz is a return to non-app form!
I remember using the app for this theme for the one set I owned and being kinda disappointed. Not really like the app didn’t live up to my expectations, but that it was just ok. Looking back, it was way too over-marketed for what it was.
I always wondered what the deal with secondary character designs were, but seeing that final wave really looks cool and I wish I knew about it when it was on shelves.
I low key think if this theme was reissued today they’d make truck loads of money
This theme feels more appealing to me than dreams currently is. The app is corny but if done right it could be rad
School bus is bussin
DEATH STRANDING REFERENCE!!! RRAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
If only they didn't push so hard for the phone app, I loved the idea and own most of the sets, and would you guess I never once touched the app. What a shame it ended so soon
Review on tobias and the arcane merchant?
Lego Hidden Side, or as I like to call it, Zoomer Survival Horror
More infamous Spider-Man videos PLSSSSSSS
Ye the boxart was what killed the line completely, imho
It's so weird to me that Lego would try and integrate an app so much into a theme when it's so obvious that a large part of legos appeal today is to get kids off of their devices!
I did buy many of the sets, and their biggest draw was the clever play features. Much like the Super Mario sets, you can enjoy the sets without the app because the builds are still well made. I do remember the shorts but they were fairly forgettable. Shame Hidden Side went so quickly though.
Oh this came up in my recommended again, didn't you say you were going to stop making lego rewinds?
Time to catch up with what I missed, I guess
@@Amelanduil Well, a couple years went by and… I changed my mind
Sorry for this inevitable reply but MAINE MENTIONED
Mixels pls
....Already did it.
I remember when each wave came out. Those first 2 were so cool, and then the third was kind of lame.
What's the music you use for the start of all your videos?
It's a sample from a song inspired by Planet Ripple, "Rippling."
@NickonPlanetRipple what's the name of the band or composer?
Hidden
Side
Halloween
Special
Was that intentional, Nick?
Yes.
"Hidden side"? More like "not very hidden side"!
