I am into bonsai for over 40 years now. As there was not that many info to find. So I had to experiment and now knowing what I know now, my trees would have been prize winner. Now they are just beautiful with each a particular “character” that could have been avoided knowing all when I started. Jelle is exactly telling you things and doing it in a way that I now know works perfect. He even uses the little heap in the pot and slowly twisting a bit while pushing it in the soil is exactly the same as I do. Now I see that is indeed a good trick. All you’re starters. Suck this knowledge in, you will have prize winners years from now. And a little tip, always think practical there is no right way to do things. If it works and the tree stays healthy you doing it perfect.
Thanks for these helpful tips on growing bonsai. I follow a number of the popular bonsai RUclipsrs. You are quickly moving up the list of my favorites.
Great variety of repotting tips and tricks! It's true, everyone does it differently... Some leave the old soil, some remove it, some wash the roots bare...
I have been a Bonsai admirer for over 70 years! I wish I had started plants when I was a young person. Recently purchased some beginer Bonsai from a large American nursery and I am now “off to the races”. I enjoyed your personal You Tube visit and thank you for your help and education.
That is a really good point about burying the younger trees deeper for better root development - something I often forget! Another well thought out and presented video Jelle :)
Jelle, your tip about drilling a horizontal hole for the wire is great, and nice to see your thoughtful touch with your friend's tree pot choice. I can't believe that in the first few days of March, I was able to repot outside today and not even have to wear a jacket. We usually have several feet of snow on the ground.
Hi Jelle, I love the the first tree you did the Lilac it is a very good natural style. I like your idea of making a hole under the roots on this one to hide the wire but still do its job of holding the tree in place. Great video for the beginners showing how to repot individual trees and working on the roofs. I have a lot of repotting my trees to do over the next couple of weeks.
Thank you for such a thorough demonstration of various approaches. I love your 3 wire tie down approach and used it on severalmaples I repotted last year until the roots stabilized in the pot. I have to get going on repotting. Its been really cold but the buds are "green lining" so I best get hustling. Glad to have watched this first. Thanks.
Just in time. I’m getting ready to repot several small maples I got from a nursery and you helped me see what I’m doing right and what I’m doing wrong. Thanks for another good video.
🤔 OK, so my seedlings could be potted a bit deeper. Well, I have got a lot of spgahnum moss around the roots, so I will keep it as it is for now. During the summer I will be checking it and the next year I will repot it better. Thank you.
Thank you for this well-described repotting video Jelle! I never appreciated how differently one handles refined bonsais compared to those in development. Very glad I saw this at the start of my repotting season. How to you handle the aggressive roots of field grown trees when you start on the refinement path?
Very nice video Jelle. But what is the lilac, I mean what variety is it? is it S. 'Palibin' perhaps.I have to wait a few weeks still before I can repot, have still snow and ice on the ground, but all I need for repotting has been bought.
Wow one draining hole on the lilacs pot.. could that be part of the reason it wasn't draining well? Btw beautiful tree I love lilac and I have several myself.. the deadwood really adds something special to you Specimen
I live in an apartment and fortunately have a huge patio which allows me too many trees. Unfortunately some of them are budding out but not sure if it will be safe to repot as I don’t have a greenhouse to protect them.
I have read that Little princess naturally grows out sideways and has a weak crown and so it is recommended not to hard prune the apex. Do you have any experience of this? I have what I hope is going to be a quite nice Little princess with good radial roots but I am a bit scared to reduce it in height. Any advice?
I have heard you mention that your trees spend the winter outside in the garden. What is your growing zone? I am always afraid my bonsai have been made too fragile to survive our very cold, very long winters. What is the deciding factor risking it?

I appreciate you using a plant size that is accessible to almost everyone, at least online. 😊
Good point. I think the 4 trees I worked on combined have cost me less than 100 euro's. This hobby does not have to be overly expensive.
This is probably the most comprehensive video on root maintenance for different situations & stages of tree growth I have watched to date. Big thanks.
Your channel is developing into a very useful educational resource.

U are a great teacher of bonsai. Thanks
Very helpful video. It's hard to find much on maples this size. Thank you! More please when you trim them. ❤
This was a super helpful video on repotting. Glad I caught it at the beginning of our repotting season. Thanks, Jelle!
Fantastic video. Ive watched so many about repotting and none have given so much good advise about developing the nebari. Thank you ❤
Love your work…jelle.
Excellent and helpful video, thanks again
This was super helpful! I wasnt sure what to do with pot bound maples I just bought from a nursery and how to assess the roots!
Great video, as usual! Keep up the good work!

thanks for the help on Bonsai Nut!

Mine is a Dwarf korean Lilac, var Palibin. They have great small leaves.
Nice video. I am still a noob and repotting is very stressful for me. I’m worried I’m going to kill my trees 😢
Camera out of focus sometimes 😟. But appreciate the videos. Your trees are amazing
yup, my camera does not have autofocus 🙅

Leuke video! Is het niet zo dat het substraat dat hergebruikt wordt minder luchtig is?
I mix the used substrate with fresh……no problems.

can you reuse the soil left by repotting?
👍👌🙂
