Affordable bonsai ! Begin a bonsai for 50 bucks ||

- WIth lots of money, anybody can buy bonsai. But if on more of a budget, what will 50 bucks get you, if you have to buy substrate, pots, and a plant? Follow me as I search for plants at a nursery, repot, and do a first styling of affordable bonsai material
In June, Carlos at Bonsai Yeah challenged Nigel Saunders at The Bonsai Zone, to get a pot, substrate and tree and create a bonsai for 50E. In the comments I was invited to join the fun and the spreading wave of the challenge. Visiting multiple nurseries before I found the winning tree, pruning, wiring and repotting to make a great Yew pre-bonsai. Also, I put a picea on its way for the work over winter.

It's not the base price of the pot that makes the challenge expensive, it's the Taxus added. Yew have done well with the challenge, but I think there is a typo in your hashtag, should it be "YewForTheBin"? Your Picea needs a bit of Spucing up, but I think you did say " just wait until spring" however you didn't mention what year!!
I'm sure after seeing my tree, you were a little Jelle of it!

Yeah, I figured. But I have no more space for tropicals in my house! (Like i have space for more tree in my garden.. ahum)

Hi Janet, so far I think most peoject have a good survival change, dont you? But indeed , a bit much for one sesion in. summer!
Great result.
At the nursery I look for a good trunk - ideally thick and developed, with some potential movement, and without an ugly or obvious graft. The trunk is the bit that takes most time to develop and is the base on which all future work and styling depends.

Exactky what I think too! Get a good trunk and decent roots. All else is to be removed most of the time anyway!
Love your sense of humour & friendly jibes at other bonsai mates. Also it’s so refreshing that you don’t take all day to style a tree!!
:) So you noticed huh? Buut .. little secret.. I do take hours sometimes to style a tree, I just choose to show any technique once, and then not repeat the same thing over and over as there is nothing hew to be seen :)

I've considered trying this challenge but I am new-ish to the hobby and even newer to posting videos, and my region is in summer now as well.
I would say.. Go for it. Take a tropical species and take ot slow. It will help you focus?

I love yew "berries", people are scared to eat them as almost everything on the tree is poisonous including the seed inside the fruit body, but the flesh of the fruit is lovely. reminds me of melon, very nice.
Interestingly, I have never tried them. Maybe I should!

Ohw, guess my english is not good enoughtl. Never ubderstood it had to be in one store. Guess the landscape store wpuld have had the same pots, but I had these (you did not think I really went twice?). In any case. I understand there will be a winner and a price! Magnus, where is your tree?
@@GrowingBonsai I have done 2 trees for free, one 6 and one 7 euro tree. The cascading juniper was 15 Euro. If I go for 50 Euro challenge, none of you will have a chanse😅🤣. But if, it will be done earliest authum as I share your doubts about big summer work.😀👍

This is a great video for the series, I'm calling it that because I've enjoyed all of the video's you compiled into the playlist and I've been watching them like a series. It's so nice to see everyone having fun with it, thank you for making the playlist. I've made my first video just talking the challenge because I have a lot of $50 bonsai with a few "beginner years" on them and I'll be recording two more where I(hopefully) complete the challenge in a few way's now that it's spring.

Hey Carlos, thank you for stopping by! Conifers are about the main group I work hard this time of year to be honest. And I waited for the right moment: It has been absolutely pooring with rain yesterday and it is so cold, I am considering wearing shoes!
We are living on the surface of the sun here in Texas! We could use some of that rain out here!

Those trees are fantastic! I wish I could have found something that large. I will have to gather large trees once my skill at overwintering gets better. I can certainly see the future you talk about. Can't wait to see the updates! Well done!
Hey, I found that onve I started to get a little better trees, I put more effort in the hobby, might work like that for you too? Where are you located? You get bad winters?
@@GrowingBonsai I am in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. If you know zones, I am zone 3a, 3b. We get -30 to -40C in winter. I have only had one outside tree survive so far, in my partial basement. I am trying to find a good way to overwinter using native trees I collect for free first before I purchase nicer trees. This year I will try leaving them in my camping trailer. Nicer trees from greenhouse here are very expensive.

Hi Dan, I think there is no winner. Participation is the name of the game, and inspire others to get started when they see you can get decent starts with a not over-the-top large budget. For sure I will create an update once spring growth is around / wired.
This is some of the best good humor smack talk I've seen. In one of your comments you mentioned a guy named Sam as if you all might be afraid he'll take the challenge. I take it he is very good? What is his channel name? Amazing work on the two trees! These will EVENTUALLY be show pieces for sure. And thank you for emphasizing being patient and waiting until the right time of year for certain plants. I've watch many people do beautiful work on trees at the wrong time of the year. Only to see them never show the tree again. I guess they didn't survive. Cheers

@@JK-qz1sw I am afraid there is not much to tell / show re. the maples. They are green, sitting in the shade, in winter I will see which have rooted. I play the long game, patiently waiting and not fussing. (Got too many trees to be concerned with individual projects too much!)

Jelle, our Friend, let me ask you one question about maples from cutting. Keeping them in substract untill next year. When they root, do you plan to keep them in the sand(?) or transplant into a pot. And if 1st option will you fertilize the trees at all.

For me seems quite the same characteristics, but Seramis is much cheaper.
