Prime example is Red from the Shawshank Redemption. Originally the character is a small, Irish-American man with red hair in the short story.
But, they loved Morgan Freeman's portrayal of him so much, they hired him to play the character.
As a respectful nod, they have Red say the famous line on why the prisoners call him "Red": "Maybe it's because I'm Irish."

Thank you so much! Blade has been my favorite Marvel character since the 90’s and honestly the fact that he was Black was never a draw for me, nor a deterrent. It was ‘Hey, it’s a badass vampire hunter with cool gadgets and a sweet ride, guys! F*ckin’ Choice!’ He’s Black because his mother and father were Black and he’s what happens when a fetus survives its mother’s vampire attack. So what?
That said, I don’t see anyone but Wesley Snipes playing that role. If they reboot Blade for the big screen they better get someone who can appropriate that look and style.

The sad thing is that they swap the "race" of the characters, and are then told "create your own." But then when they create their own, the writers start the characters as victims of social injustice, needing to overcome that. Which is a waste of time, as opposed to overcoming personal issues. "I'm oppressed" isn't the same thing as having six different personal problems stemming from a personal flaw. Black Panther, in his initial appearance, had to wrestle with the issue of seeking vengeance, and in his movie, the tug of war between tradition and innovation. Wonder Woman was basically one rite of passage after another, as she grows up in several ways, at several key points.

Those sjw are turning people racist without them knowing. I live in a country with somewhat diverse tonality on the skin color but we tend to not notice that or it is usually not important. I grew watching all these "white" and "black" people as a people. Then I learned English from different sources, including the internet. And every time I try to think in English, my brain unconsciously "loads" the stuff that I must state a race of the person.
Like a year ago I remember telling a story to my brother about another person who was badass (I don't remember the story exactly). I told that story in Spanish. Then like a couple of weeks after that I just randomly thought "how would I tell the same story in English. So I started like "ok, so there is this black dude,..." And then I immediately said to myself, "wait, WTF, why didn't I tell that he was black when I told that story in Spanish?"... Then I carefully review the whole story and , it really was not relevant to the story. It was somehow incredible because there is usually some kind of stuff related to skin color or so the media teaches us. But it really was not relevant so when I told the story in my tongue language I just left out that part, I even did not see it. When I was trying to tell that story in English, my subconscious tries to tell me that I must tell that the protagonist is black. I don't know how it happened but it happened. I blame the sjw media to have transformed my mind into a racist somehow. I try to compensate but my brain always loads labels for people. It have happened again when I watched recently avatar the last Airbender, I really just saw people but then in some forum they noted that the water tribe are black skinned and I really didn't noticed or didn't think that it was something to be noted. To me people are just people and these little differences don't change them of what I think about them, but their actions will.
Sorry for the long story. I just like to express myself and I don't know how to summarize stuff.

I understand why they did Miles Morales with a different name...because adding the LGBT and living parents was too much of a deviation from Peter's character, but they could have had peter parker but black and that would have worked. No one sees Spidermans color in the suit, and nothing about his race is integral to him, unlike Clark Kent, whose race IS his disguise. Actually, they could've had some really good content around Peter parker being black. How the police collab with him as spiderman, yet profile and mistreat him on the street as Peter. Or how people assume spiderman white because of he talks. Or how it feels to just be a kid flying though NYC and the escapism he experiences versus the everyday racism he has to deal with. could've been good! #missedopportunity

His comic stories show that he’s a Republican, and his conservative ideals come into ideological conflict with his sidekick Rocket, who is a liberal. The two of them disagree on certain issues, but they work their issues out and focus on saving lives. There’s even a subplot where black activists call him a sellout for mainly stopping black criminals (in a majority black city) and call him an “oreo”. Icon is confused when one of the activists says that he doesn’t “sound black”, asks Rocket about it, and then tears into that phrase after Rocket explains what it means.

The reason that Superman and Batman wear trunks is because their original costumes were based off of circus strongmen and professional wrestlers of the era. And wrestlers of that era usually had 'trunks' on the crotch area of their tights.

Yes, many people don’t realize that. No no you're a good guy and all, you're just not black enough for me to follow your example...'
And I must honestly ask...as a white male, am I not allowed to look up to black heroes OR blacks in real life? Can I not want to play basketball like Jordan? Can I not want to model my comic/movie career after Kevin Grevioux? Can I not want to learn about science like Neil DeGrasse Tyson? I saw Miles as "The new guy on the block" the normal guy taking up the role of Spider-Man and the movie emphasised this as a journey for him and development. He wasn't Peter Parker raceswapped or anything and all the characters are in the comics. At least Marvel can put effort into it instead of DC saying "Let's make Clark Kent black cuz our reboot isn't doing well" cuz it's the laziest form of pandering in writing.

It is also ignoring a lot of facts about the black experience. I'm half black, half latina (looking white, what can one do) but I can assure you that my experience of life is quite different to that of a white woman in my country, or a white man, or a black man. So, if we put young Clark in a black family growing up his experience would be vastly different to the one of a white young Clark. There are nuances of the black experience of life that are different to those of a white man and that is a fact. Black mothers are different to white mothers, there's a cultural thing that is simply different and we can't deny it. I'm not saying better or worse but certainly different. So a black Clark/superman wouldn't have a reason to be the same as a white Clark/superman. They would have had vastly different life experiences and that would make them different people. Race does influence the things you have access to, the music you listen to, the friends you have, the family dynamics you live, it's cultural. My latina family is very different to a white family and to a black family too. What we eat, what we do together or don't do together, the expectations, the opportunities...it's all different. So assuming that it's the same is completely erasing the black experience, the black culture, the black in general. They think race is just a matter of skin color and it is not. The "color blindness" in regards to people erases the individual experiences of the different cultural groups and it is not acceptable, not inclusive and truly not diverse. Same as queer-swaping characters. My experience as a bisexual woman is not the same as the experience of a lesbian woman, a transwoman... a man, a bi-man, a gay man or a trans man. It is not! So this swapping only clickbaits people but continues to erase the true diversity that we're supposed to aim for.

So if they want to make iconic black characters they just have to put in the time, effort, talent and resources. Spawn is a testament to that. If you race swap established white characters then all you get is "the black [blank]". The iconic white character remains as the foundation because the blackness isn't inherent only cosmetic.

    • @theanimationcluster7995

@Gentleman Murk that’s because none of them had the reach, money, and effort put into the icons. A character made in 1920 will inherently have an advantage over one made any later than the 60s. On top of that, by then, you have to rely on filling a niche that is just profitable enough and well made, so that people will flock to support the product, a feat that should be far easier in the modern day. If we had well written games and movies specifically about these characters and others like them, they could be massively successful and push them to mainstream if marketed properly.

I completely agree I've been able to relate to batman and I'm not rich or white I've also related to rogue from the x-men animated series and I'm not a female it's all an emotional connection cause we're not machines we feel to understand and connect with the world seeing is a beautiful bonus but can also be turned into something ugly by the wrong people unfortunately.

I agree with you but I do think chars who looked like us helps. Especially kids. Imagine being a black kid and all you have on media are rappers and that's it. There's no popular black character. Asians and white people do have that extra connection with chars because they look like them that helps them.

@@Drake00000010 While it is true that representation is important, these people take it to extremes and operate under the premise that a character can't be relatable until they share some similar characteristic with a particular viewer. And there's the problem. If we rely on superficial details to make a character relatable then we've lost the character's humanity.

@@stewartmullings1552 I don't think they're taking it that extreme. Consistently seeing that your race isn't among the strongest, smartest, most powerful people in these universes sends a powerful message that has been spread for a long time.
Miles Morales was important in that regard because Pete's always been the comic guy's hero. Looked down on, appears weak, misunderstood the characterisation of a comic book reader in some ways but he posses amazing will and inner strength and is endearing when you start getting to know him. It's really nice to see Marvel show that this could be a black guy too.
I can see why it feels like something's being taken away from you but we've had decades of celebrating the American standard in our heroes. I don't think it's so bad to show that heroes can come in different shapes, sizes, skin tones and religions.

Blade isn't really new in comics and he became pretty big hit. He got his own movie trilogy long before one of the iconic characters in comics.
This just shows if done well, even minor characters can sell like superman or Batman. Yeah they might not be so iconic, they need time to develop but it's not impossible. They are just lazy.

I’ve been seeing the topic of race swapping coming up more and more due to actors/actresses such as Halle Bailey being cast as Ariel and Keke Palmer being a popular fan cast as Rogue by a lot of people. I wanted to see other peoples opinions on it. But your take has by far been the best that I've heard and wholeheartedly agree on, your point "If you change the character from what they originally were, then it's not the character people love and they won't like it." is exactly what I think, if you change what people already know and love it'll cause a problem. Like you said, it'll bother people and It’ll bother me too. I’d love to see Icon, Steel, or Val-Zod as opposed to a race swapped Superman. All the swap does is fill a quota. Why fill a quota by changing how a character looks when they could introduce many other characters. I believe the random saying “Black characters can only succeed by replacing originally white characters, otherwise they remain a sidekick or are forgotten to limbo.” is a wrong assessment. I believe if given a chance by the people more characters that are put into the limelight can become popular and a talk of the town. I don’t think they’ll get as iconic as the heroes we know today. At least not in any time soon because the reason the characters we love are so iconic is because we’ve had so much time with those characters. But in time I think more diverse characters can be built up and appreciated as much as others. With the minor characters changed today such as Dead Shot, Domino, and Red Sonja were all written pretty well to me, they made them enjoyable, fun, and interesting. Which brings my other point, if they can take a less popular character and add diversity to them while keeping them well written, and enjoyable then what’s stopping them from taking an already existing diverse character and bringing them onto the big screen? I think the solution is that rather than changing an already existing character to bring diversity they should use them as a stepping stool to introduce pre existing characters. If they can do it in comics they can do it in the MCU or DCEU. But the point you have that the problem is popularity not diversity is an amazing and phenomenal point and I applaud you for that. Your video was outstanding and you’ve earned this sub, like, and notification bell. I’ll be tuning in again!

No it’s not, just name any iconic black character and ask how people who support these changes if the same happened to Storm, Blade, Jon Stewart, Warmachine, Falcon etc. Once they finish gasping at the mere thought of this, just call them hypocrites for wanting the same for white characters. Easy.
