I know exactly what you are talking about. Loading up all that stuff and tying it down then unloading at the water. I am 56 and work full time but it does wear you out. I am skinny but it does wear you down fishing. I live in NC and love it. I think you made the right choice.

Great choice. My wife has been using a Bixpy J-1 motor for over five years. We greatly enjoy on our Hobie Oasis. Instead of using her Mirage drive, she carries Bixpy instead due to knee pain.
I use it on my Outacak if I am trolling for Salmon on Halibut. I tried rear mount first, but when fishing lines or debris get tangled around the motor, it is impossible to remove in the open ocean. I switched to a DIY side rod holder mount and removed it when I was not using it. One disadvantage of this mount is turning toward the motor side, and it may be necessary to apply some momentum with the mirage drive.

Before you rush out and buy one you need to check out some of the video reviews. This little motor, according to some reviews, produces a lot of vibration/noise. Good for getting from point A to B not so good on sneaking up on fish. Don't abandon your pedals and paddles too quickly.

I guess you got tired of my praising my Bixpy and looked into it. 👍 I’ve had the J2 for nearly two years and can find no faults with it. I’ve run from the launch to the slop bowl back lake and back on less than half the battery (setting 5 of 10) with my Hobie Outback. As you see the product is very well designed and manufactured. I bought an extra mount for my Tarpon 120 and it provides steering (Tarpon has no rudder). The Tarpon is lighter and has a more efficient hull so I have gotten as much as 6 mph on flat calm days. I have attached a line on tube below the clip so I can manually pull it back into the clip. I also mounted the motor closer to water surface to be able to use it in pretty shallow water. Just make sure it doesn’t cavitate. I have seen an Old Town 120 with a Bixpy on the back in addition to their trolling motor. I also insert the battery on its side in the left side rear tract mount and loop a bungie over it to keep it secure from sliding around.

Another advantage of an Outback with a Bixpy over on Old Town is if the Old Town runs out of battery or has some drive issue you have to find a tow back to the launch. With an Outback you just peddle as usual.

Nick I have a 2022 outback too, also got the J2, getting the new one and putting it in where the paddle drive goes “double the speed “🐟on. I was going too put trolling motor on front of kayak to have spot lock but rather have the speed distance and less weight. Good choice on buy. I mostly like too drift fish and fish along the banks. I broke one side of the clip of cause when it’s cold motor don’t have enough power to snap it in place. I have no problem “ your choice “. LOL

Good review. Look forward to your “on the water” review. I know the Jet is not very fast but you can obtain increased speed by using it as a “power assist” when pedaling with your MD180 (or 360, although would avoid sharp rudder or drive turns).

Thank you for the quick synoptic rundown on your Bixby K-1.
I really like the sleek minimalist set-up of the system. I am very curious how the steering with your rudder works with the fixed position of the K-1. Could you please dive into that in your on the water tests? Also the noise, vibration & cavitation aspects while you are out there (I'm sure you will, without my asking! You are very thorough in your testings and reviews! 😀)

I have the J2 on my kayak mounted on the back. It’s great until it gets covered in weeds. With that said it’s great in open water. The only downside is the battery life. Seeing how you have the same battery as me you only have 1.5 hours at full speed. Speed is not as high as a regular trolling motor. If it’s mounted where the peddle drive is would probably be better as it’s easier cleaned out when grass covers it. No reaching to the rudder. The weight of it is only 10 pounds and zero holes drilled in the yak. Last most important down side is reverse kicks back up 90% of the time.

    • @alducks1
      @alducks1 Год назад

I didn't find a kit, but I DIY'd a Minn Kota onto a rudder on a Perception Pilot, powered by a Li-Ion battery...much cheaper than the Bixby but naturally not a sleek. Stealthy look with the motor and a long battery life without much more weight than the Bixby. Still keeps the pedal power installed for backup or short hops during the day. Sorry but I can't hijack his video comments with a link to mine.
Next project will be a DIY e-assist to the pedal assembly.
Glad Nik has the $$ to add the Bixby...he should enjoy the convenience.

  • @CaptJimmysLivingTheDreamFishin

I’m curious and will be following your reports about this Bixby set up.
I know you will give us a honest feed back of weither your ideas were successful or not.
I’m wanting to get a motorized Kayak also rather than self propelled. I’ve looked at OTown, Kaku, a couple others and now this one.
My biggest fear (other than drowning, barges or Alligators lol) is running out of power back in the shallows or on a windy bay.
    I’m thinking
    1. You might be under powered with only 38 lbs of thrust. Seems it will need to be run oh high most of a trip
    2. Being that you fish hard like you do, that the battery will deplete before trip is out.
    3. I noticed bixby had a attachment where motor can be used in same center location as where your paddles were, rather than out the back.
I’m Hoping I’m wrong on all 3 items mentioned.
Looking forward to your future great video teachings and motorized report.
    🤠👍

      JCK
Not hijacking an answer from Nick....
A problem with mounting your motor in the Hobie peddle port is that it is sticking up in front of you and if you want to lift it up in the shallow waters, it is a clumsy job and you have to stow it somewhere. And if you want to use your peddle drive in the shallows, it has to be stowed somewhere and retrieved when needed.
Thus the advantages to the stern mounted motor system, peddle drive can stay in place, much less bulky expensive hardware/gear loose in the yak. I hope that answers your question #3.

Your battery will do the same. I run speed 9 out of 13 speeds. I Always get back with halph if the battery. Regulated it lasts much longer than the specs.
