Back in the day, Boxers, even at the championship level, weren’t paid enough money. They would often find themselves in financial trouble before reaching the age of 50. Then, Muhammad Ali, entered the spotlight. He was loud and boisterous, when the expected norm was to be quiet and humble. He would hype the fight, by talking down the skill sets of his opponents in humorous ways, publicly humiliating them, while talking himself up as the greatest. Most, if not all, of his opponents found him to be very obnoxious and arrogant. They hated him, and wanted nothing more than to defeat him in the ring, and shut him up. However, they would later discover that all his talk was just his way of hyping up and selling the fight. Therefore, it was because of Ali, that many fighters would find themselves, win or lose, earning more money than they ever thought possible boxing. Once this was realized, many of rivals would grow to respect and love him for making them richer. Some would even embrace the tactic and play along with it. Now every fighter is encouraged to talk trash to one another.
