Daggum, the fact that you provide this without charge... You are a mighty fine hero.
Thanks, Sean. Unlike many RUclips channels that dilly-dally around, your banjo lessons get right to the point and push through from beginning to end. I appreciate that. Also, I appreciate the fact that you don’t talk to beginners as if they were children. Best wishes.
These are seriously some of the most professional quality video lessons I've seen generally, but especially in the banjo community. So much information packed tightly, I've rewatched 3-4 times already
Thank you kindly Sir.
Gol dang this is about the best musical instruction video I think I've ever seen. You covered all the basics quickly and clearly . Super helpful for breaking into banjo. Thank you.
Sean, have been listening to your Tube posts for quite some time. You are a very skilled player. I just found this three part lesson and must say it is exceptional. Your ability to play and teach is unmatched. Thanks.
Thanks Bob! I appreciate it.
You helped me apply my keyboard-based music theory to the banjo. Thank you! You changed my life!
Thanks Andrew! Glad to help.
Bloody brilliant tutorials mate, looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and finally learn all this actual music stuff instead of just messing around!
I have looked at a lot of RUclips banjo lessons in the past two years, Sean. A heck of a lot, but you are amazing. Count me in as a disciple.
Thank you! I've learned more in theory and how that applies to the banjo neck and shapes and progressions in this video than any other. Much appreciated!
Thanks Sean, really nice lesson. Very clear. After ten years of playing and listening to Earl, I'm still amazed by subtlety and importance of his backup. His backup on John Henry on Classic Bluegrass is but one example. His playing is so rich.
Great lesson. Finaly somebody tought how to play scales. I did not know which fingers to use since I am new to banjo. I play drum, so do you. Cheers from Brazil!
I am a beginner and I am used with "do re mi".....your explanation "organized" my mind. Very clear.
Very great and professional demonstration here, very easy to understand, thanks for sharing this buddy.
Great EASY TO UNDERSTAND intro to theory. I'll be back for more. Many thanks.
Wish I had seen this video a couple of years ago when I started playing. You explain the chord and scale system in a logical understandable way. Thank you.
Theoretical underpinnings of Western music clearly covered in the first four minutes! Well done!
Fantastic explanation Sean. I've been a huge fan of your style since I started the struggle to master 5 string banjo. This has been such a help can't thank you enough.
Geof Harris (England)
Thank you for actually explaining this! been playing guitar and sax for years and never understood it! Thanks!!!
Brilliant Sean! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and putting it across in an easy to understand way . Looking forward to part 2 .
Scruggs's grandfather learned to play from my great grandfather. I learned this recently while learning about the banjo. Im still digging into it but I thought it was cool.
Outstanding explanations and demonstrations. Wish I'd seen this when I first started playing. Thanks!
I found you with the search banjo for blues. Perfect.
Terrific video! Thanks for the context and showing how everything connects
Well done. Best I've seen on the subject. Keep them coming.
you make that Kentucky sound amazing! bravo. Great lesson
This approach works really well for me
I dont play banjo, i wish i did, but just watching this gave me more understanding to music and how i can improve on guitar
At 4:45 you play G(5th fret/4th string), B(4th fret/3rd string), D(7th fret/3rd string)/ and then "play them all at the same time, but you've changed finger positioning to a triad. I'm missing the logic on how you go from the original position into the triad to play all those notes at the same time. I am loving this breakdown on theory of which I know nothing! Thanks!
It's the same three notes in both examples. The first one shows the notes going up a typical scale pattern. The second plays the three notes at the same time which requires three different strings. Hope that makes sense.
Thanks for this sean! Ive got your books and now these will be a serious help!
really solid video here. I look forward to more!
Absolutely excellent instruction. Thank you.
So good! You went so far as to put the big red circle-slash through playing licks throughout the whole song. Could you expound on that a bit? Thanks!
Thanks Chuck!
Nobody wants to hear a banjo, or any instrument for that matter, senselessly wail throughout an entire song. It's all a matter of taste. Listen to your bandmates and play for the song.
Hope that helps.
Sean
Fantastic tutorial! This clarified many things for me.
Realmente, o melhor, objetivo, direto, pratico.sem muito bla bla bla.
Fantástico. Obrigado
Fantastic lesson - you really area masterful teacher
Sean, I'm loving these lessons. Clear, concise and thanks for the tab format. And I can too count to 12 and I know my letters real good - dammit!!! What do mandolin players know anyway?
+Terry Harvey - Thanks! Yeah you know how mandolin players are.
This is so well done, I can't wait for more.
Sean, your lessons are the best!
Gracias por este video....Cuando el próximo?.
+Alejandro W. López - Gracias, estoy trabajando en la lección 2 de esta semana.
What is MLI at 4:00
Those are the fretting hand fingerings. Thumb, Middle, Ring & Little.
Yeah me to other I could lay a few iicks but it's like guitar you have to learn and start with basically great video I have learned a fair bit in less than ten minutes thanks
Excellent video
Your're a great teacher!
Thanks Laurent!
Exemplary presentation , delivery and content.
Can this be played on piano?😅
Subtítulos porfavooor, mucha gente que habla español quiere aprender a tocar banjo pero hay muy pocos que enseñan en español.
If I'm a beginner player (started a week ago) should I be following this kind of instruction and be learning more theory or should I just stick to learning easy rolls and chords? This seems like a much more thorough way to learn and probably best if I can stick with it.
Anyone have any advice?
There’s a guy called Eli Gilbert if you haven’t heard of him he’s currently doing a 30 day starter banjo course all completely free check out his channel I would start there
Good demo❤

wow, learnt so much in just 8 minutes... whens lesson 2 :)
Thank you very much.
Very effective lesson. Thanks for sharing.
It is not a given that banjo players will know how to count to 12, or the first 7 letters of the alphabet... :)
