I love how antagonistic the two are in the opening scene. They clearly hate each other, and yet they both thought "Hey, you know what would be great today? The beach!"

Seriously, it's like they forgot they rode to the beach together and then decided to bring up old shit to fight about like they just happened to run into each other there after a long time apart. XD

Some couples like to keep things fresh by hating each other in a variety of locales. Plus, it always spices things up to inflict your unhappiness on an unwilling audience, preferably of friends.

I could never . . . . . . never . . . . . yea, all that griping they did at the beginning was to try to establish young tension between the guy and the girl, but it went a bit too fast. But when I tried watching this thing, I couldn't get through all the msuic and . . . dancing there at the beginning, then Tina is killed and the other woman, Elaine, shows up.
      Hank actually was hardly shown.
Either 'Tina' didn't want to do it anymore, or they decided she wasn't 'pretty' enough, so she was killed off.
I just now watched the whole thing, mainly to see if Hank was still around. Yea, he held out til the end.Just showed a lot of stuff that didn't seem to matter to the movie. Yea, I know movies would show singing and dancing, but all thatt guff really drives you away from the movie, don't it?

Not if it's part of a genre and you know what you're going in for.
It's a sub, sub genre, the Beach blanket Bingo mixed with the Muck monster was perfect for drive- in theaters.
According to a lot of people in the comments, this band did have some notoriety. So you go to see bikini babes and muscle beach guys, listen to that cool music, move in on your date when the monster attacks start and pretty much ignore the scientist stuff. That's why they kept it simple. Sodium. O.K. even the distracted teens will temember that.
Nowadays it's infamous, for it's ridiculousness and that makes it perfect fodder, for Mike, Crow and Servo!!!
They serve up A-1 material in this one and manage to still roll with the film.
I wouldn't watch the film-minus the Riffing, unless it's at a drive in, then I'd reconsider, maybe....
I never thought I'd find myself defending, one of the worst films in history.
But every movie can provide entertainment, if your willing to find it's perfect position.
      Take Care,
      Cheers from Canada

I was amused to read an article in Weird NJ magazine long ago about this movie; some scenes were actually filmed here in NJ, and what's more, the beach band playing at intervals where a real group called The Dynamic Del Airs, and they served as character witnesses during one of the most infamous mafia murder-trials in NJ's history.

This one was my very first taste of MST3K! I remember it so well even though it's been well over two decades ago -- sitting at my SIL's house while hubby, SIL & BIL, and friends played D&D in the next room. I didn't care for D&D so I was the designated babysitter and would play on the computer or flip channels after the kids had gone to bed. I stumbled across this insanely cheesy movie made hilarious by these shadowed figures talking throughout the entire thing, and when later I described it to hubby he said I must have found MST3K. I was a die hard fan after that! Even spent countless hours playing Caption This! at night on the sci fi channel website, anyone else remember that? Good times, good times.

So, this flick was shown on “Creature Features”; a late Saturday night program on a independent Television Station out of Oakland Ca. KTVU Channel 2 in the 60s and 70s. When Horror At Party Beach debuted on this hugely popular show in the Bay Area there was huge hype!???! I watched with my older sister who was babysitting me at all of five years old in 1967. It scared the hell out of!! Keep in mind, the average home had one television and it was black and white with rabbit ear antennas in the 60’s! (Mom and Dad bought a 25” Color consul beast of a television in 1969 for Monday Night Football!!) Horror At Party Beach, The Vulture, Psyco, The Birds and “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane” were all new mediums to for the big screen; and terrifying because they hadn’t been done yet and there was still “Magic” in the movies before all of the high tech Fx and How Their Made featuretts. And, today the movie is horrible by any standards since 1980. For its time, it was horrifying believe it or not. The Exrosist did not effect at all when I was 11, this movie gave me nightmares for three years!! A classic early 60’s drive in movie with beach parties, bikers, campy lines, beautiful girls and monsters!!!

Wait, what does carbon-14 testing have to do with genetics? Can't believe I haven't noticed that before.
Fun fact: Pure sodium is a metal soft enough that it can be cut with a plastic knife, and so volatile it has to be stored submerged in oil, because it could react with the moisture in the air. And generally a jar of it can be found in any high school chemistry lab.

U kidding? Dr. Gavin does EVERYTHING in this from researching how to kill then killing the monsters. He disabused Eulabelle of her irrational fear-mongering in a calm, plain-spoken manner. Dr. Gavin taught his daughter the value of courtesy and RSVP’ing. Eulabelle ruined the only sample they had for which to do testing due to her wildly hysterical behavior.
Much fuss was made by the bots demanding that the protagonists use Sodium but How does one locate them in the first place to actually implement the sodium? Do you have enough of the sodium ? The monsters appeared randomly: beach, sorority house, woods, and even a quarry! So Dr. Gavin researched radioactivity levels in local bodies of water and Hank went to NYC to get as much Sodium as he could. All the While eulabelle tried to derail the momentum with her Voodoo idiocy. Constructive criticism is not racism. It toughens ppl up and makes them better in the long run. Saying Eulabelle’s the hero just because she knocked over a beaker reeks of the bigotry of low expectations(BLE).

Well, even now, the teens in movies and TV are played often by folks in their mid 20s to thirties. (cast of Glee, the High School Musical movies,etc.). The real issue, I think, is that there's lots of rules for kids in the movie/television industry and it's easier to make your 'high school' cast over 18 so you can get more hours in, don't have to worry about on-set schooling, etc.
As for Mike's back...Check out the Jack Frost episode. His front ain't bad either :-D

I think even Corman might consider this one beneath him. I mean, they screwed up the basic "reveal to character and audience the "sleeping" character is actually dead" gag by forgetting that you have to align the audience's POV with the discovering character's. A child could see the problem there. Say what you will about ol' Rog, but he's usually at least competent.
