@AdamKrukowski yeah, does we means everyone? I can completely legitimately say we, as vast majority of Poles do not smile, talk or even look at strangers on the street. And if somebody does it, most Poles find it weird. You obviously never heard "what you looking at" on the street. I live in UK for almost 15 years, theres nothing to compare, and this stereotype about Poles is completely valid. Smile to people on the street in Poland, and theyll give you "a look". Say good.mirning to a stranger, and he'll ask you "do we know each other?" Or, most likely wont even notice you, or pretend that he didn't notice. That's who we are, and there's nothing wrong about it. Go to the.north of England, have a 15 min walk, and you'll hear "you all right" 10 times.

Drinking in Poland. It is actually a stereotype (you can look up statistics). Another thing is that Polish people actually consume more beer than vodka. But something that is true tho is that when we drink WE GO HARD and there not many folks that can outdrink us before they pass out. Polish drinking culture is also quite different from Western drinking culture. We drink and eat (there typical drinking "snacks" you eat alongside drinking heavy alcohol) How did this stereotype come to life? Well, because there was a time it was true and it has a political origin - the communist era. Alcohol was dirt cheap (state controlled prices) and it was a common tool of communist governments to keep the population numb to political issues.
I grew up in Poland and in my house we did not drink alcohol until we became 18. And it was mostly beer and wine, and not vodka. So those stereotypes are stupid. ,aybe because vodka in Poland was cheap.
@@annawarner1078The stereotype comes from what the guy above said - in the past, several decades ago, it was indeed a thing. What can I say... when life is poor and miserable, like in the times of communism and crisis, people drink to drown their problems. And alcohol was indeed a method of political manipulation. But it's of course been inaccurate for a long time. Many younger people actually don't drink at all. However, it is also a fact that we can go hard when we party - even though we don't drink much on a daily basis. ;)
I'm Pole and I live in Netherlands. I was actually very surprised how much Dutch people drink. You go to city center in a middle of the week at 13:00, it's crowded and most of the drinks you see on the tables is beer. Might be the money difference, but in Poland I do not see people drink so much beer along the day as here
If somebody is smiling at you in a day time on the street, your first thought will be - a street salesman or a beggar, depends what that person is wearing...
It is strange to smile at strangers on the street. I personally don't do that because it is weird to smile at someone who is avoiding eye contact. It also can be taken as an invitation to a conversation - we hate small talks. Especially when we are in hurry. Poles are honest people so we don't fake smiles or cares. If a Pole ask you how you doing/how's been your day - it means they care to know it, they care about you. In big cities or towns you don't greet people on the street. Why? Simply - you don't know them so you are not obligate to do so. It is different in small towns or villages. I lived on the countryside my whole childhood and I've been told to greet everyone I meet on the street, because I might not know them but they know my parents and it would be very rude not to say hello. I live in Norway and people here tend to be warm outside but they are really cold inside. They will smile, say hello but they won't let you in. Poles are opposite, we might seem cold outside but we are really warm inside. You can learn the life story of a person that you sat next to in a bus. We are very friendly and open people, so don't be afraid to approach us:)
1) Small talk. Since Poles have been cooperating within e.g. corporations with foreign companies/coworkers, we have been doing this. We put on a smile and engage in unnecessary introductory conversations. We adjust, but at least at the beginning for most of us it is very insincere. When asked "How are you?" we internally feel the need to answer truthfully and not to dismiss the interlocutor with a somewhat offhand "Fine, thank you, and you?". If we are to talk about business, we usually get to the point right away. It's different when you know your interlocutor well. 2) Smile Well, we simply have a resting face (some have a resting bitch face :D ), but that's it. Someone here raised an interesting argument about historical events where a pasted smile could threaten unpleasant questions from the occupier (one or another). On the other hand, I notice that I usually, where I know that familiar people can see me, with a slightly mischievous smile (if the situation allows). However, this happens because I once intentionally tried to do it and as soon as I disappear into my room, for example, I notice that my face changes into a resting bitch face. The cultural issue also has a lot of the already mentioned proverbs saying that you shouldn't laugh without a reason. We also don't brag too much like Americans, I think again for historical reasons. During communism, if you were doing better than others, there were two options: you were either a commie or you stole. This is probably the aftermath of this way of thinking. But it is changing. 3) Negativity American culture is based on Protestant values, where hard work brings success and success is proof of harder work. In Catholicism, being too rich, at least according to the Book, is not good to be too rich and still enjoy it. In the most superficial sense. Easy justification for jealousy. This point also comes back in our small talk and smiles. The color of Polish autumn and winter in the city also does its thing. 4) Alcoholism In the times of communism - yes. Now not. We drink a lot of beer. Parties usually have alcohol. However, in place of alcohol, other stimulants are now entering and the approach to them is becoming more and more nonchalant. 5) Racism Yes and no. Since our society is overwhelmingly white, people look because it's something different. Most people have stereotypes in their heads... but... the André Traveler channel is a great example of how it works. Especially in slightly more representative smaller towns. Our kindness and hospitality have an interesting curve of their function. Rather neutral-negative attitude towards strangers. However, if they come into contact and it turns out that this is a normal person, then we move to the positive side, if a given person shows a desire to enter the culture, our friendliness grows. And not in a deceitful way. However, if they do something that a Pole would still pass (maybe not without consequences, but rather minor), the function collapses. You can quickly lose what you have built if you intentionally do something "bad" for us.
We dont smile as we had saying that were already said in chat here, but also as we dont need to force show that we have good intentions, as we treat it by default, what is contrary to USA. Also I don't know why in few western countries Poles do seem to have the "r word" stereotype, when since from medieval times Poland was the most open country to religions (sometimes only one country where religions were living peacefully togheter) and ethnicities. It probably became from where Poland was sold out by USA/GB to Russia after WW2 for peace and occupied by it. And yes we have the world record of drunk with over 13 promiles for a man (that lived and drove a car) and 12 for a woman, but drinking habits changed and % of vodka usage droped vs lighter alcohol :) - also drinking from time to time is OK, if you know how to take it, and we Poles can take it ;). Also total value of alcohol drunk by Poles yearly is similar to werstern countries, we just preffer harder stuff then they do.
the guy saying about The good morning saying it wasn’t a complete truth, like people react like that but in bigger cities I think because where’s a lot people, everyone’s going somewhere y’know basic stuff and me living on the countryside it’s just everyone is saying good morning because it’s how it works, every time because everyone think “hey that’s what I should say”. I remember when I once saw my neighbor in supermarket and I forgot to say good morning then passing by I still remember it even tho it happened like a month ago it’s just I can’t forget how could I did that to him? But yeah that’s what I think that just it depends where you live Thanks for reading if anyone was bored enough to :3

Bro, im Polish and my three four best friends for life were from Chicago a Korean Doug a german couple of brothers and a Hawaiin Chris.... Love You guys for life!!!!! Racism is a social construct that does exicst but isn't real
Yes and no... You do yours, I'm doing mine and we can get along without racism... As a Polish guy I'm racist and don't have problem with other "races", but cultures are problem (which somehow is still called "racism"). I'm working in international company, met many other ppl, but everyone is behaving like human... Now look at Sweden, Norway, UK, France, Germany and "immigrants" from Middle East... Group rapes on 9yo girls? Why only thier culture is allowing this shi*? Those are animals not humans and should be banned from that countries... but that would be "racist". Where is "safety first" for own citizens? Or you moved aboard to another country and you don't learn thier lang when working with them? That's happening on so many UK's factories... Being employed for 6-12 months and only nod? XD
yeah, i dont think i've ever met a TRULY racist pole in my friends group. once you start taking certain stuff less ,,seriously", opposite to the western ,,woke" values, you don't really care about appearances
I was born in a very small town in Poland in 1977 and there were no other ethnicities in my town and we only had 2 tv channels and half the time they didn’t work so I never seen any other ethnic people when some said you know that black guy they meant he had black hair and dark eyes nothing to do with skin color. When I was 10 years old my family moved to Canada and at the airport I saw for the first time a dark skin person and I said omg he really spends a lot of time in the sun I thought it was a really good tan then my parents explained it to me but it was my first time seeing other ethnic people too I was amazed because I had no idea. I think that the older people might look at you because they are from a small village or town like I was but it doesn’t mean that they are racist
I learned nothing gets off people more from my back than most cold look without smile. Add slavic flair on our face and we look like we gonna do something sadistic. And I was just deeply thinking of life...
Polish don't smile for no reason. My Polish husband was very confused when strangers smiled to him after moving to Canada, and even after 3 yrs of living here, he still dislikes it.
"I don't care who you are, I don't like you" is polish mindset, and I love that in myself. I'm happy with known persons, not strangers like Mericans loving small talks.
I'm quite an oddball in this case, for I do actually smile alot when outdoors. Then again, I do daydream pretty much the entire time. Or recall funny things I've seen online.
I tend to smile and speek cheerfully a lot, despite being Polish. Of course, we are varied as people but this kind of demeanor made the strangers in public communication or on the street pick up a small talk with me. As an introvert, it makes me anxious every time to have to come up with a smalltalk but i am too impolite to not to answer 😅😅😅...a double-wielded sword...
We do the whole smile and greeting in Sweden if you’re out in nature, don’t know why it’s like some unspoken rule, don’t greet strangers in the city but in the forest 👌
3:55 we actually don't have "super strong winter"... it snows rarely in this times and mostly it just rains unfortunately... (I'm talking from my experience and I'm living near Poznań) and if it actually snows it's around January/February. 30 years ago we had a really strong winters but now we don't, and if it snows one day, the other day it's melting and we have puddles of water EVERYWHERE
I will tell you this much - first of all the case of us (Poles) smiling at others depends on the level of familiarity with the other person. It also depends on the person but I for example could be described as being the male equivalent of Resting Bitch Face. I don't know if there is a male idiom for that. Secondly we drink more beer than vodka but that also depends on region and couple other factors. Thirdly I wouldn't call us cheap in that we will buy the cheapest things because we want to keep all the money. In many cases it's just necessity because the cost of living is incredibly high compared to statistical minimum wage.
A lot of it comes from generational difference, current youth is generally a lot more open and happy, easier to connect with then older generations ( mostly due to living in post communistic country, in most simple terms you didn't know who to trust hence cracking a smile at people you didn't know was considered suspicious). Other than that we don't really do a small talk that much, are very direct and care very little about politically correct speech which people from US can find it very offensive (happened to me aloooot when meeting Americans in South America). And yes - we do drink fair amount of Vodka.
Its sometimes hard to smile when you are tired out of your mind. Facing same BS every single day, fighting the unfair system. Our prices are "European" but we earn about 4 time less. So people are forced to become hostile to others. Sure we smile but its kept for worthy occasions. Have a good day. :)
15:38 My mother worked as seamstress at home and as living silver at the age of 6 i was given a couple of srcewdrivers and an old sewing machine from the 70s so that i would have something to do and not disturbe her at work for a few hours
My dad is more like baby with a tantrum while i am the one making everything work 😂,but of course grandpa is good too,but very stubborn to do everything himself 😅
I am Polish living in Spain, I try to smile even to passing strangers, but if some stranger would say to me hello, I would overthink about, oh, where I met him, and how is his name? I would be in stress, that I am so rude that I forgot somebody's name... 😅
As Polish person i say it like this, we dont poot fake smiles to walk whit it oround in public. Only place i place fake smile on ma face it is at work becouse i hav to, but when i walk around in streets i got so many things in ma mind i got "resting face" and if u think is bish face instead wellp sorry m8 thats just ma face i was born whit it, i dont like place fake smile is tiring but even if im tired after work or something bothers me and u came up to me smiling and start nice conversation i will smile back and talk to u, if u repsectfull and undertanding im respecfull back, we all hav our problems or can feel bad and smiling all the time whit no reason is just weird, is like u said it ur self there is place and time for that. Other thing is EVERY single country has is good and bad sites and racism and other stuff is every where, i alweys say it like this if ur good person i dont care where u from, whut color skin u got, whut u consider ur self are etc i will treat u best i can becouse i care, But if u being and ass u will be my worst enemy and i would care less where u from etc if u being ass and hurt others u ded to me. About alcohol some people drink more some less is every where , we live in times where drinking is not big deal anymore we drink wine to dinner or even elier we drink in nights when we go out . I hav no idea where it camer from we are alcoholicks is just we like more havy stuff then other countrys maby? No idea but if we celebrate we celebrate big so i dont understand of being suprised by it does not every one celebrate stuff to the fullest if they can? Some countrys are more talk active some arent like i heard a lot latinas and mexican people are wery talk active and they will talk to ya whenever they can, in japan people are more quiet and dont bother u and for me i alweys say it there is time and place for everything, there is time when i talk to some randome people engaging inconversation but there is also time when i need peac and quiet. We as human being need to tru understand it and read the room when u can or can not do some stuff. IUf live by rules or stereotypes i would make frends in diffrent countrys at all.
@Cp-o6c and dont forget that Poland was sold out after WW2 for the peace. But anyways it is a custom that you go with neutral face, as you dont have to communicate any "good" or "bad" intentions, since "good" intentions are by default and you dont have to show them purposly. Thats the difference vs USA
@ „sold out” ? You mean BETRAYED by the same country to whom they shed blood Count Kaźmierz Pulaski, 22 yr old hero who kicked out Cornwallis and took a bullet for French Lafayette in order to give USA their FREDOM 4th July 1776 and Tadeusz Kosciszko who engineered West Point impregnable. Neither of two servicemen nor their country receive RECIPROCITY for their SERVICES from US but BETRAYALS at Yalta, Crimea REWARDING the same EVIL that sucked more of Innocent Polish blood in Katyn with rest in Ukraine. So, to HONOR THESE Sacrificial POLISH LAMBS buried in mess grave in Katyn Russia their POLISH jet carrying their president with cabinet gets blown up AND TO DATE never returned to Poland for analysis. So, this non stop barbarism is being to date REWARDED with blood of parents and their children taken into RUSSIAN slavery. Its not land that they need. That they have plenty. But the slaves to serve their drunken S high on CONTROL, SLAVERY and OPPRESSION. I believe in US its referred to as PSYCHOPATHS with dark tetrad and triad. How many times must this nation under God endure sacrifice? I hope that every empath in POLAND and throughout the world turns from this sorta BETRAYALS OF TRUST into SIGNA empathic with spiritually warrior personality trait much like Karol Wotyla a/k/a St. John Paul II The Great did after serving in Hitler’s rock digging cory. Can it be how He continued the Christian mission in WORLD PEACE?

2:50 We don't feel the need to smile at others because no one is staring at us - staring at others is rude, why do it when you can get on with your life? If in a given situation it would be weird to start talking to another person, for Poles it is weird to smile in it. If you think it's weird to say "good morning" to everyone (literaly everyone) when you walk past them on the street, then it's weird to smile for Poles. If it's not weird to say "good morning" to a cashier in a store, a building security guard, a neighbor on the stairwell, then Poles think it is ok to smile and we most of the time smile and say "dzień dobry". 17:45 Poland has 99.9% (just guess) white inhabitants regardless of nationality (the largest national minorities are also white). So if a person with darker skin comes, will draw attention because Poles see something that is not seen on a daily basis. And just like in Africa there are villages where people have never seen a white person in real life, in Poland there are villages where people have never seen a dark-skinned person in real life. PS: But if a bald person in a tracksuit asks if you have a problem, run away.
I think both men and women drink, but while men "drink away" their problems, women are more used to talking about their problems, so they drink socially. Also, in case of alcoholism, women hide their habits more, so you don't see it so clearly at first
We are honest. We don't like fake. And usa and uk are fake! Smiles, how are u, all what we see in that is bla bla bla. We don't do this often but when we do smile and ask how are u, we mean that! What do u prefer? The honestly or fake?
But for English smiling to you or asking isn’t fake it’s just part of their culture, it’s so natural for them to ask you how are you like for you not asking strangers or smiling to them. Simple
Smiling, asking how am I and not giving dam what will be the aswer is real? It's fake, they don't give a dam about u, how would u name it, if some ask how are u but simply doesn't care? it's fake politeness.
@@GG-wh1gt like I said it’s a part of their culture, it is being decent human being to just show even fake smile to strangers. Better fake smiling face than I don’t give a damn serious face. English like Polish people once they get to know you better they will genuinely be interested about you. Compare that to supermarket situation, in Britain they will greet and smile to you whilst in Poland they will ignore you completely or say dzien dobry like someone forced them as well. I prefer fake smile and politeness and I am Polish

about racism thing, many people are having distance to themselves, and we think other cultures do aswell. However nowadays us spread the approach that "there is no such thing as joke, and if there is - it should be taken serious". That makes ppl who like us "racist" in eyes of us and everyone thinking that way. Younger generations are sadly learning that bs approach from places like yt, so soon that trait might disappear.

racist is NOT weird or bad or hate.. it's pattern reckon.. i just know that some people will try to do more bad things and i just know from their face what the danger is and what to avoid.. yea its normal here, but your ACTIONS make you human.. if you are good - no matter the race you would be VERY welcome in Poland :)
My father he is a some kind of rasicst. He told to me some stories from his past experiences life about when he was in Africa like that when the black people cannot entry room where white people were and use same cuttlers with plates to eat. But I think it was only because they were worried about Affricans diseases so I don't think he is a rasist, and now he is like almost 80 yrs old and I love him :*

Might be the money difference, but in Poland I do not see people drink so much beer along the day as here
Now it's social media instead.of alcohol
If somebody is smiling at you in a day time on the street, your first thought will be - a street salesman or a beggar, depends what that person is wearing...
I'm wondering if anyone would smile having a Russian and a German as neighbors. :)
They said that winters are harsh, that's NOT true. Most of the recent winters were comparably warmer than in the early 2000
2) Smile
Well, we simply have a resting face (some have a resting bitch face :D ), but that's it.
3) Negativity
American culture is based on Protestant values, where hard work brings success and success is proof of harder work. In Catholicism, being too rich, at least according to the Book, is not good to be too rich and still enjoy it. In the most superficial sense. Easy justification for jealousy. This point also comes back in our small talk and smiles. The color of Polish autumn and winter in the city also does its thing.
4) Alcoholism
In the times of communism - yes. Now not. We drink a lot of beer. Parties usually have alcohol. However, in place of alcohol, other stimulants are now entering and the approach to them is becoming more and more nonchalant.
5) Racism
Yes and no.
But yeah that’s what I think that just it depends where you live
Thanks for reading if anyone was bored enough to :3
I lived on the countryside my whole childhood and I've been told to greet everyone I meet on the street, because I might not know them but they know my parents and it would be very rude not to say hello.
it most likely wasn't about the "dzień dobry" being rude or something, but "what? how the f this black dude have such good pronunciation?"
@@jasparta993 It's more like "Why is this person acting like I was their close friend, I don't even know them; this is creeping me out."
5:16 not true, we say Dzień Dobry to starngers on usual too, just not really in the cities.
We do the whole smile and greeting in Sweden if you’re out in nature, don’t know why it’s like some unspoken rule, don’t greet strangers in the city but in the forest 👌
The same in Norway. I think it is a scandinavian thing
It's true. When I first moved from Warsaw to Florida the way strangers greet you as you walk by was striking.
The Polish smile is why Polish people are good at poker card game.
Poland has really good weather! Summers are very very hot, winters are very cold so I think it's not the weather matters.
reeally nice and funny reaction :P
Whats to smile about?! french are seductive, germans are well organised and we don't have 1 positive stereotype about us! F this, I'm getting drunk.
Being occupied by Russia who could smile. So this explains how this stereotype started in US.
I haven't seen strong Winter in poland in years, what is she talking ab 😂
The weather is more like london with more sun
The older generation did more of everything. The younger generation watches RUclips.
A film about Nowy Targ:
Małe miasteczko w Polsce podbiło moje serce! Jak oni mogą TAK żyć? [eng. A small town in Poland won my heart! How can they live like this?] ruclips.net/video/nEV4Gq8C-2c/видео.html
This video should be 2 seconds longer
1:15 why did you mess that up... why cockow
I think both men and women drink, but while men "drink away" their problems, women are more used to talking about their problems, so they drink socially.
Also, in case of alcoholism, women hide their habits more, so you don't see it so clearly at first
I mean, my parents aren't racist, they just mainly don't know that what they said might be racist
15:54 cap 😆
Yes we are, we dont need browness in here
I think communism plays a big role in this. (smiles). People were always suspicious because not everyone could be trusted.

This is truth people from sunny countries are more happy. People from Northern countries are more miserable
Why miserable? I dont like false friendship. We respect our individualism.
Noooo You Say Brother , bcs he have skin like You, and no not all Polish People have a mad face
Love internet. The way we get known each other is amazing. Im polish but You can call me brother, why not?
about racism thing, many people are having distance to themselves, and we think other cultures do aswell. However nowadays us spread the approach that "there is no such thing as joke, and if there is - it should be taken serious". That makes ppl who like us "racist" in eyes of us and everyone thinking that way. Younger generations are sadly learning that bs approach from places like yt, so soon that trait might disappear.
Bzdura jestem z mniejszego miasta i nie jestem rasista nie chce tylko w Polsce islamu i ludzi ktorzy nie pojda do pracy a ludzie na filmie niektorzy mowia glupoty
Bo to "młodzi, wykształceni, z wielkiego miasta" :-)
racist is NOT weird or bad or hate.. it's pattern reckon.. i just know that some people will try to do more bad things and i just know from their face what the danger is and what to avoid.. yea its normal here, but your ACTIONS make you human.. if you are good - no matter the race you would be VERY welcome in Poland :)
What you're talking about is not racism. Racism is judging someone based only by their "race", and being blind to their actual actions.
all is true. we drink, are racist and don't smile without reason. Most of us of course.
We are.
Those videos are getting stupider every time.
