Greener gaming would make more sense if they were disposable products. Many people tend to keep their games pristine within a sort of library style collection and/or they are traded amongst other people in the hobby.
Of course, awareness should be brought to production methods for sure but whether a single component is plastic or wood, I feel unpersuaded about the actual global impact.
And going for the whole McDonalds approach (in the UK they no longer produce plastic toys in their Happy meals and instead use cardboard) I feel on one hand could dampen enjoyment/creativity or on a more cynical level could just end up as CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) totem climbing; that is meeting certain standards on one hand and carefully avoiding them on others, all in order to support their PR.
In all, knowledge is power and I would like to see stats produced on box covers of their co2 impact, BUT, I still wouldn't want to be evangelical about a single game using plastic to meet their vision.
