They're pretty much like a forever toddler until they're seniors, and sometimes even then. My senior girl used to bring me all her toys and roll on her back with them, with that goofy expression, wanting to play, and was always super needy and wanting attention. I loved every minute.

Have had golden retrievers for at least 30 years. Live in the UK. Love them. Usually find that the females can be more bossy and stubborn than the Males. Our dogs are spoilt rotten, but not to their detriment. The female tends to learn to sit before getting a treat earlier than the male.
Our oldest retriever was almost 15 years old before he had to be put to sleep.
When they become 6 or 7 years old we tend to give them cod liver oil to help prevent arthritis. Then if needed later they get given Zipvits flexa joint which is a glucosamine, chondroitin supplement for dogs. Finally they may get given Devil's claw.
But as I take the human equivalents I made sure it was okay for dogs before giving it to them.

I'm going to have to chime in here about the spaying issue. We actually lost our Golden Retriever last weekend. She was 9 years old, and it just about broke us emotionally. The reason she died was because of Pyometra, so she died in excruciating pain and traumatically to boot. Pyometra kills 1 in 4 female intact dogs, and it is completely preventable by spaying. We assumed there was no need to spay her because there was no chance she would get impregnated. If I could go back in time, I would have spayed her. We would have had more years with her.

So sorry for your loss, I recently had to put my rottie down who was also 9. It was heartbreaking. I’m getting a female Goldie in a few days. People say not to spay cause it 5x their rate of cancer. It’s bad both ways? Or 🤔🤧

I have a five year old golden and she has not been spayed purely because of the joint and cancer risk. Yes the seasons are a bore but she wears doggy pants with sanitary towels inside and that keeps her and the house clean. I don’t agree with spaying or castrating dogs unless for medical reasons. The endocrine system is there for a reason and imo should not be disrupted.
ETA my Jess is not at all stubborn, is extremely gentle and lives with two free roam house rabbits plus she adores my young grandsons. I’ve never had a male but I can say hand on heart that Jess is a true angel.

My golden girl was 12 yrs old when she passed away last year. Broke my heart. I also kept her intact after much agonizing and research. I worried a lot about pyometra during her senior years, but she only went into heat every 10-11 months and I kept her very clean and monitored her very closely during the 8 weeks post-heat to ensure there was never any strange discharge or change in behaviour. Best wishes with your girl - they're such a treasure.

Why do people say “potty train” a dog? There no potty involved. It’s called house breaking so they go outside not in the house. We used to ask, “Is you dog house broken?”

@@C0d0ps Early spaying might increase the risk of bone cancer in bigger, faster growing breeds (i’m not sure about the small breeds) and not spaying gives you a fairly high chance for testicular- or mamarian-cancer. So there isn’t exactly a correct answer. You can ask the breeder if they know about certain cancer histories in the gene-pool of their dogs… i did not learn this in a study but through books.
