Annie is great and all, but the true story is the mom. She came to the US with nothing and rose from a cashier to owning multiple businesses, and raising a daughter who went to Havard. What a lady.
My father came during the Vietnam war Cambodian refugees and he owns 4 houses, 3 boats, 3 cars a Corvette, hummer H2 and BMW M3 ... And he's 70 years old right now he's a welder, and body man, mechanic he might not know English as much but he gets the job done as he owns a car shop
The fact she helps her employees with recommendation letters, SAT help, tutoring, etc is really beautiful. I wish I had someone like her when I was growing up.🎉❤
As an immigrant from northern Italy who came here with my mom in the 1990s, I felt this! We came here with $800 and a one-way ticket. Now I am a physician and my mom is a nurse!
Agree and even more importantly, they were given this opportunity by America, the greatest country on earth. This hardwork and everything wouldn't go as long in a third world country

When she said I edit college essays, at that moment I fell in love, WoW what a BOSS! To say i work for ice cream store and the boss helps all the worker with there school work and she graduated from Harvard is impressive and inspiring
Working for Annie and Sarah was such a valuable experience! They truly are dedicated to their employees and community! And Sarah crafts the BEST ice cream ever!
as a korean gal who grew up in the dmv raised by a single immigrant mom i LOVE annie's story!!!! incredibly heartwarming to hear what she does to build up the teens who are saving money up before heading out to college too. cheers to their success and a true second retirement
As a son of a korean immigrant family who moved to NA when i was also 9, this is truly heartwarming. Our parents have done so much for us to be able to do the things we can today. I live in california but gosh, shes like my sister all the way in washington dc. Wishing nothing but continued success, love and Fullfillment for her and her family.

I love the relationship that she has with her mom. I love Annie’s appreciation for her mother, the mutual respect and how she strives to be a better person and actually work towards it rather than just saying “I wish I’m like that and like this.” She has a wonderful outlook on life and is definitely an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your story with us.
I loved how this video did not mentioned anything about how they went about starting an ice cream business (having no background in ice cream making) and what is the current relationship right now with the ex-husband/father in the family. Nice
This is so heartwarming, I love how her mother says about her daughter "she's my life companion". They have a beautiful relationship wishing them many more years of success ❤
That is actually very unhealthy!! However lots of parents do this where they use their child as an emotional husband/partner etc. They should date or find a separate companion & not use their child as a surrogate partner. Unhealthy & toxic!!
Annie and her mom are two of the most hardworking and generous people I have ever met. Their relationship is something so special and truly inspiring. Their success is the result of thoughtful planning, dedication to excellent management and a superior product. All this to say you need to get the ice cream! Sarah’s handmade SLAPS. So happy this deserving business got this feature
I’ve been there so many times! It’s in one of my favorite shopping centers with favorite stores and lunch spots. The ice cream is top quality and creamy. Their shop is such good energy! I love all the books they have out for children to enjoy. They are an inspiration.
This is so personal to me. I’m an immigrant also but same age as her (32), I have a violin that I’ve been trying to learn how to play it. I too sold ice cream in my home country with my mother but my mother is no longer here and I feel like I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur but don’t know where to begin. This was very inspirational.
As someone getting ready to embark in a life long journey of single motherhood with my own daughter. What her mother said, really resonated with me. I feel the same, I want my daughter to be happy and find joy in whatever her heart finds meaningful. I hope one day I have a relationship like this with my own daughter.
As a fellow Korean person, I am proud of her and her mom for their humble beginnings and hard-working nature. However, I think she's a bit naive and presumptuous to already start thinking about scaling her ice cream shop to a 3rd, 4th, and 5th store locations. I think she should keep focusing on her 2 locations before scaling outwards. Scaling your business too quickly always comes with a lot of risks, and you can't assume that customer demand, product quality, and costs will stay constant with additional brick and mortor stores. Ambition is a double-edged sword: it can elevate or sink your business. Times are always good when the money is rolling in, so you need to take a long term view on things before expanding too quickly.
Incredibly lucky! I wish I had a mom like this…not all of us have an amazing mom like this. Some mom’s are jealous and bitter towards their own daughters.😢 lovely to see a mom who doesn’t compete but wants success with daughter.
This episode is really heartwarming and inspirational 😍. Two hard working women supporting each other, and it being a mother daughter team makes it really special. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mammas.
Annie is living the life and is just really crushing it! It's even more inspiring knowing that she came from humble beginnings as well. Thank you CNBC Make It for another empowering video. I can't stay mad at you guys now for not satisfying my weekly addiction of waking up early on Saturday mornings to catch your new releases. Sunday is better than nothing.

My dad gave up his pension so I can continue my education. Now he's dead before I can pay him back. It's great to have your mother still around to enjoy the fruit of your hard work.
This was fun, and their story (especially Sarah’s) is amazing, but I’m missing so much about the business. How did it become ice cream? How do they make it? What are the numbers? She made a ton of $ within the first year?? So confused as to cash flow. We need more business journalism to be done on these, please. Anyway, congrats to them as these two are powerhouses.
An incredible video for the most amazing family. I’m blessed to know both Annie and Sarah, and they are true gems. Their love for each other and community shines through the minute you walk into their store. Congratulations Annie!! Can’t wait to make my way to the shop to get more lemon poppy seed ice cream!! ❤
Usually I watch these episodes and feel like people with these high salaries are just bragging. However, I want Annie and her mom to have all the success in the world because they deserve it.
We love Sarah's Handmade. It's the best and everyone who tries their icecream loves it. Their servings are also very generous. One of the best treats in the DMV
Incredible story! I can relate too. I also started a new business in a virtual double kitchen in Chicago with no based customers. We sell American Chinese food. It’s been two years and five months. We had only one order per day in the first five months. Now our annually sales is $800,000.00. Great teamwork with mother and daughter working together. It is a very inspirational story. It takes resiliency, patience, and hard work. I doubt myself also. However, I believed in my passion. To provide quality ingredients in my cooking and generous portions. Thank you for sharing your story! Keep going with your inspiration and your dedication! Lisa Yuen
tbh, the daughter's story isn't interesting, its the mom's story and sadly they leave out details of the critical part - how she went from a cashier to a deli owner. having a graduate degree from Harvard and selling ice cream frankly seems like a waste of Harvard
My favorite episode so far being a Washingtonian myself this perspective was refreshing .I also was raised by a single mom and I’m looking to open a small business soon. Truly warmed my heart to know that these ladies love each other and most importantly their hard work is paying off. Congratulations Annie and Sarah🎉❤️
Wow, two inspirational and lovely ladies. They sound like great employers and a credit to all small business owners. If I’m ever in DC I shall visit Sarahs for an ice cream.
We need more bosses like Annie!! A lot of high school students lose out on preparing for college because they’re working part time jobs. It’s amazing that she’s doing SAT prep and recommendation letters! I’m excited to try Sarah’s Homemade Ice Cream when I’m back in DC! ❤ from NYC

The mom is badass and the daughter is hard working and grateful to her mom which is great to see ❤
They opened 2019 right before the pandemic and are doing extremely well. Goes to show anything is possible ❤

The love she has for her mother is so obvious, just the way she looks at her, and it’s just so beautiful
I like her confidence. Even started from humbling background, the girl really shines in her confidence.
What ppl don’t realize is that most daughters will mirror their mom, so if mom is happy so will daughter.
