    Eh up Karl. Making bird boxes is great. I don't think you can have too many in the garden and they are great to give to friends and family. Also, if you have nowt to do, build a bird box, it's always a satisfying thing to make. I like the one you made and I'll be making two or three for the infant school where I work. Regards, Fred

    This is why I don't normally follow other people's plans, I should of put the sides on the inside and the front and pack fixed to them from the edge 🤣 that way the roof would of had a longer overhang on the front not the sides. Make sure you read the plans not like me winging it🤣 I'm sure the birds won't mind though, well I'll soon find out if my van has bird poo all over it in the coming weeks 😉

      Loved the video Karl just one other you missed mate is a stripe of rubber or felt at the back where the roof joins the back board to stop rain getting in.

    Why not mitre the roof piece so it’s flush to the back plate.Also fix small twigs to the inside of the front plate to give chicks ease of access to the hole.

    Water based finishes can still be toxic and often are more so than oil based . There are a plethora of oil based finishes that are suitable for food / animal contact

      @karlpopewoodcraft  2 года назад +1

      Really very interesting ive never heard that before sound like i need to do more research as the normal advice is water based is less hazardous, do you have any links to this information for reading? well mine is natural so that's probably best.

    I must admit Karl making bird boxes is very satisfying. I made 3 last year or so and now i have blue tits, coal tits and jenny wrens nesting at the back of my garden. Great video again

      I haven't had any birds nest yet but I had a hedgehog move into its den in the log pile I made for him.

    Nice build Karl, but I think the roof overhang is meant to come out the front not the sides. Shouldn't make a difference though.

    • @karlpopewoodcraft
      @karlpopewoodcraft  2 года назад

      Haha maybe I popped the roof on the wrong way round lol it does have a centimetre on the front so I'm sure the birds won't mind considering their nests are in the open 😉 😂

      @@karlpopewoodcraft The overlap stops water dripping into the box, meaning the chicks aren't sitting in water you dope.

    Lovely build Karl. Looks like an easy one to follow and perfect for the garden. Do you know if treated wood is best for a project like this, as it will be outside? Or is treated wood harmful to the birds? What wood did you use?

    • @karlpopewoodcraft
      @karlpopewoodcraft  2 года назад +1

      Hi Andrew they say to avoid treated timber, cedar would be best but I just used standard pine, it will last a few years no problem.

    Ooh, if you want people to tell you how to suck eggs in the comments... make a birdbox. Thankfully you followed RSPB plans so that should be to a minimum :)

    • @karlpopewoodcraft

      I actually think I put it together wrong 😅 😂🤣 I'm sure the birds won't care 🤣

  • @robingallie317
    @robingallie317 7 месяцев назад

    If this is the RSPB plan you've put it together incorrectly. All pieces are framed from the back forward rather than from the sides of the backboard. Also the lid needed a hinge so the box can be cleaned. As birds use these also for overwintering roosts it would be best not to rebuild but rather clean out. Also saves on wood.

    • @karlpopewoodcraft
