Heidi, your videos never disappoint. It was me and my apples all day today! I don’t have apple trees, but we have a local orchard nearby. I made applesauce, freeze dried slices, used all the scraps to make ACV and apple scrap jelly. Oddly enough, I didn’t dehydrate any BUT what a great idea if I had extra to use later. I also kept the apple ‘mush’ from cooking them down for jelly (before adding sugar) and will give them to my chickens and compost worms. Nothing goes to waste and it’s a good feeling. You’re an amazing teacher of so many things, and I appreciate all of your knowledge over the years!

When we store our dehydrated goods in jars i include a teaspoon of salt inside to prevent any fluctuating moisture. We also save and dehydrate our old pits and cores from fruit and use them in our smoker, ex cherries, peaches, nectarines. Godbless y'all from the Arkansas yonder

When I recently made an apple crisp, I wanted to find a way to use the skins, other than composting them. I decided to dehydrate the skins and then powder them. I combined that powder with some cinnamon, and it was so good. I'm actually thinking of making some for a Christmas gift for my son.
What a wonderful idea! We keep a sugar cinnamon mix for toast, oatmeal and sweet potatoes... I imagine your apple powder skins would be a fantastic flavor to add! Thank you. I do something similar with tomato skins which I powder and use in soups.
@@alicerafferty9595, yes, I cut the peels into smaller slices, though I didn't concern myself with making sure they were evenly sliced. I use the powder in yogurt and smoothies. I didn't add sugar to it because I liked it with just the cinnamon added.
My husband (and I) are both addicted to dehydrated apples as a snack! He brings home apples from the store and I take care of the rest! He brought different kinds….I didn’t separate the varieties…..now, he wants them separated and labeled as to what kind they are….LOL (Yes, he’s a “bit” OCD!) I love the apple peeler/ corer. Apples don’t grow here so they have to be bought from the store. I wonder how it would work with potatoes? The “core” of the potato could be cubed, and all could be dehydrated? Has anyone tried this? I have to say it every time I see the vacuum sealer- I love mine!! Your fried apple pies look like my great grandma’s and brought up great memories. Many Blessings!!
If you make hand pies with the dried apples , would you please be able to do a video on it? They looked so good! I also like that we can use any juice to rehydrate..I know amish they do a Snitz pie .wow delicious .an amish family I worked for about a year ..we exchanged my service for foods they produced, it was wondeful .The wife gave me a Snitz Pie she had made about 30 of them for a function .It was such a wonderful pie.and not extremely sweet either ..they use dried apples .I was under impression they don't fully rehydrate before .she called it also dry apple pie..I have to look in to it again .she gave me a recipe .finding it after moving and so much life is another story.

I have to hyde my apples if i want to store some.. my (grown) kids can empty a jar in no time, at least til they go from crispy to limp :) then I can finally have some for oatmeal, pancakes and granola bars.. Thank you Heidi, that was the hard part about learning to freeze dry, freeze dried items need to go into jars/mylar warm as they absorb moisture if you don't. Which went against everything I knew about dehydrating.
That would not make sense putting them in warm. Even with the freeze dried goods I have purchased from Mother Earth Products, once I open them, I vacuum seal into jars to prevent then from going stale and to stay crisp. They are always cold when I do this and it works.
On Apple subject? I crossed a vid on making Apple Syrup, that doesn't spoil at room temp. Old fashioned way to have syrup, other than maple kind. I am going to try that, but you start was cider.
I have a lions share of apples this year as well. Have just gotten on a roll with a new dehydrator, (Magic Mill 11 tray). I thought it was awesome for the first 4 batches. then with a full load yesterday it quit heating😡 So frustrated ! I have so much more to do. Removed them from the trays and froze them, hope they will be usable for something . As always , appreciate all of your knowledge ❤ thank you!
The thing to know is that different people have different ideas as to what is "safe". I do not claim my ways are the best but I do my own research and experimentations to find what is best for me and to not live in fear of the old ways.
Hiedi, I purchased some dried apples from Azure. Everyone was talking about how good they were for snacking so I said to myself I’m just going to get a small bag and try them. Oh My, I got them and they were not crisp or crunchy. These were like rubber. I said oh my surely that’s not what everyone is raving about! I don’t think I could do anything but maybe make a pie or something maybe cook down for butter or like you said make vinegar. Absolutely not for snacking lol!!!
I really notice and appreciate how much planning goes into your videos, down to the smallest details including color coordinating your Appearance to the topic at hand❤. I have gotten dehydrated apples from Azure Standard for the last 3 or 4 years and they are usually gummy feeling and stick to each other. Is that what your apple slices are like or are they completely dry and crispy?
Thank you for noticing the extra details many do not pay attention to. I am funny about planning out what I wear and making sure that the videos vary enough in color according to those that publish close to them. It is kind of silly but I love how it makes my page pop with color. The crispness of the apple really depends on the sugar content and how dense the apple is to begin with. A less sweet apple will be more likely to turn crispy when dried but then so does an apple that is pretty porous before drying. I have had some turn out more leathery and some more crisp.
Peeling anything really hurts my arthritic hands for some reason. I now have great muscle rub thanks to you but then have to wear surgical gloves so the muscle rub doesn’t get on produce. lol.
Heidi: about your apple tree... How many apple trees do you have? and do you spray them with anything to reduce bug damage? Or do you have issues with bugs? Thanks for sharing your many uses of apples.

Heidi, I have made the apple powder and the pumpkin powder following your instructions. My question is if you are following a recipe and it asked for a certain amount of purred pumpkin or applesauce, do you take that amount of water and keep adding the powder? I did that and although it tasted good, it used an insane amount of powder. Any guidance on this? Thanks.
Heidi, do you have to vacuum seal the jars? I've seen one lady say as long as it's air tight your food is good, what is your take on this? Thanks so much!
For apples it is not as important as it is for meats but I still recommend it as it will help them hold their flavor and freshness for much longer. This is why I vacuum seal everything, even those things where it is not as necessary
I got one of the round Dehydrators about 3 years ago like what you have. I've never used it. The special top wasn't with it. You have to have that right? And it is separate and kinda expensive isn't it?

All true syrups, which can be made from just about anything, will stay good at room temperature due to the sugar content. I even make spruce tip syrup

We have two apple trees and never spray them. Growing mints around the base does help keep the ants and aphids off of them though

I would say start with just a little less water than that then add the powder until the proper thickness

If the heater and fan are in the top, yes, you need that, it is the most important part. Was it purchased new?
